RIGHT NOW AT NINE --

RIGHT NOW -- DOWNPOURS IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY AND PARTS OF LEE.

METEOROLOGIST ALLYSON RAE IS TRACKING IT ALL-

ALLYSON, IS THIS GOING TO BE AN ALL DAY RAIN EVENT? Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-STC

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"More wet weather Tuesday"

After seeing lots of rain over Southwest Florida yesterday, it looks like today is going to be yet another wetter than normal day for us with rain chances around 60%.

Showers will get going as soon as this morning for some of our coastal communities but will stay fairly isolated. As the morning evolves, however, plentiful moisture and a little daytime heating will lead to the development of additional showers along with a few storms, most of which will affect areas close to the coast and Highway 41.

Showers will continue to develop and expand in coverage through the midday and early afternoon hours, mostly targeting the urban corridor of Charlotte, Lee, and Collier County.

By the mid afternoon, the rain will begin to favor inland areas as the sea breeze advances farther east. While the door will still be wide open for isolated downpours later in the afternoon for urban Southwest Florida, the shower activity will be more widespread over the interior.

Like yesterday, the rain could be very heavy at times, and we'll also see the potential for lots of lightning and gusty winds in some of the stronger cells.

Outside of the rain, most of us will notice more clouds than sun, but some sunnier spells will be possible through the day as well.

Our temperatures will stay in the 70s and 80s through the morning, and most of us won't get beyond 90 degrees.

While much of the rain will diminish by sunset, a few stragglers will linger through the first part of the night. Otherwise, our sky will stay mostly to partly cloudy with temperatures cooling into the mid 70s.

Rain chances will start to take a dip Wednesday as the rain becomes more isolated and focused deeper inland.

By Thursday, our rain chances will fall even more as a much drier air mass settles over Southwest Florida. The result will be more sun along with some very toasty temperatures. Afternoon high temperatures will likely peak in the mid to upper 90s, and our "feels like" temperature will be over 100 degrees.

It still look like the heat will back off a little by the upcoming weekend as we get into a more typical weather pattern for July; afternoon temperatures will range from the low to mid 90s, and rain chances will bump up to near 40%. Return to index of stories...

NEW YORK CITY RAISED A FEW EYEBROWS FIVE YEARS AGO --

WHEN IT BECAME THE *FIRST TO IMPLEMENT A TRANS FAT BAN.

IN *ALL FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS.

TODAY -- A NEW STUDY FINDS HEALTH OFFICIALS -- PLACED A GOOD ORDER.

ERIKA EDWARDS EXAMINES WHETHER THE BAN HAS WORKED. Return to index of stories...

TRANS FAT BAN-PKG

FOODS LIKE THIS ARE NOT OFTEN CONSIDERED THE HEALTHIEST ITEMS ON THE MENU. BUT THEY'RE BETTER FOR YOU IN THE BIG APPLE THAN IN MOST OTHER CITIES.

"After the restriction of trans fat in NYC, we looked at what the average amount of trans fat was in lunchtime purchases at fast food restaurants, and we found that trans fat went down."

FIVE YEARS AGO NEW YORK CITY BECAME THE FIRST IN THE NATION TO IMPLEMENT A TRANS FAT BAN IN ALL OF ITS TWENTY-FOUR THOUSAND RESTAURANTS.

IN A NEW STUDY NEW YORK CITY HEALTH OFFICIALS CALCULATED THE NUTRITION CONTENT OF NEARLY SEVEN THOUSAND RECEIPTS FROM ORDERS PLACED AFTER THE BAN WAS IMPLEMENTED. THEY FOUND DINERS ATE SIGNIFICANTLY LESS TRANS FAT -- AND THERE WAS ONLY A SLIGHT INCREASE IN SATURATED FAT.

"You can walk into your favorite restaurant, order the exact same lunch you've always ordered, and it just has much less trans fat, nothing else has changed."

. INCLUDING HOW FOOD TASTES AND HOW MUCH IT COSTS TO MAKE.

WHAT *APPEARS* TO HAVE CHANGED IS A CUSTOMER'S RISK FOR HEART DISEASE.

"We know that when trans fat intake goes down, bad cholesterol goes down cardiovascular disease risk goes down."

EXPERTS SAY CONSUMERS STILL NEED TO MAKE HEALTHY DECISIONS WHEN DINING OUT -- LIKE LIMITING SATURATED FAT AND EATING PLENTY OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.

BUT -- AT LEAST IN NEW YORK CITY -- PATRONS CAN ORDER THEIR FOOD WITHOUT A HIDDEN DOLLOP OF TRANS FAT -- AND FOR SOME THAT MIGHT JUST BE THE ICING ON THE CAKE. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WX WALL
