IT IS THE WORST MASS SHOOTING IN U-S HISTORY
12 PEOPLE ARE DEAD
AND 58 INJURED AFTER FRIDAY'S EARLY MORNING MASSACRE IN COLORADO
IT ALL HAPPENED AT A MOVIE THEATRE IN AURORA

this one's going to kill me. This one -- this is it
THIS MORNING WE ARE STILL HEARING VICTIMS' TERRIFYING STORIES.
THEIR HOPES TO STAY ALIVE
AS BULLETS FLY BY AT A LATE NIGHT SHOWING OF THE NEW BATMAN MOVIE.
Return to index of stories...
GOOD MORNING EVERYONE.
TODAY IS SATURDAY JULY 21ST
I'M JOE ROETZ
WE BEGIN THIS MORNING WITH NEW DETAILS ON FRIDAY MORNING'S SHOOTING IN AURORA COLORADO
ABC'S REBECCA STEVENS JOINS US LIVE FROM COLORADO
Return to index of stories...
A crowd gathered for an impromptu prayer - holding candles, and mourning the
victims of one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. a day many
will never forget, a day that started innocently at a midnight screening of
the new Batman film.
NATS aftermath
Halfway into the movie, hundreds fled the carnage inside. in a state of
shock, and bleeding from bullet holes.
NATS aftermath
No one had any inkling of the horrors to come. The lone gunman, 24-year old
James Holmes, watched the film like everybody else, until he got up and used
his cell phone. Then he slipped through an exit door to get an arsenal of
weapons from his car. Police say Holmes went back inside to the front of the
theater and hurled two green canisters.
SOT Jordan Crofter, eyewitness
"They started hissing and smoke everywhere and by the time I turned the
corner they went off just 'pop, pop', and then shooting."
Jennifer Seeger, Eyewitness
"Then he shot up in the air, and everybody started to panic at that point."
SOT Jamie Rohr, eyewitness
"The baby was in my arms at the time, and then it was just chaos."
SOT Patricia Legarreta, eyewitness
"At that moment, I was just thinking I am not going to die in here, me and
my kids, we ar not going to die in here."
Just minutes later, police arrested Holmes outside the theater near his car.
Officials won't say if the suspect talked about a motive. Right now, they
are worried about his apartment. It is booby-trapped.
SOT Dan Oates, Police Chief, Aurora, CO
"I see an awful lot of wires, tripped wires, jars full of ammunition, jars
full of liquid. Things that look like mortar rounds, we have a lot of
challenges to get in their safely."

BEFORE WE MOVE FORWARD WITH MORE DETAILS POURING IN FROM THE SHOOTING
LETS TURN TO METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINER WITH A LOOK AT YOUR STORMWARN 7 FORECAST
Return to index of stories...
Yesterday was the hottest day of the year, so far. Page Field recorded a high temperature of 97°, but it felt much hotter than that as heat index values soared anywhere between 103°- 108°.
After a few storms late yesterday afternoon and evening, skies have cleared out nicely. We'll start off with ample sunshine and warm conditions as temperatures hover into the upper 70 to lower 80s. A few clouds will develop by the late morning with partly cloudy conditions in the forecast during the afternoon hours.
Dry and stable high pressure that has kept us drier and hotter than normal will weaken today, with a bit more tropical moisture making its way into Southwest Florida. This will allow a few more storms to bubble up this afternoon along the seabreeze boundary as temperatures climb into the mid 90s.
Tonight, a few lingering showers/storms are possible through the evening hours before our skies go quiet with lows in the mid and upper 70s.
By Sunday, we should see an uptick in the our storms pattern as a weak tropical wave brushes by Southwest Florida. This will bring in a few more clouds across our skies tomorrow with afternoon activity becoming a bit more numerous.
By mid week, our weather pattern will dry out and heat up again with highs remaining in the mid 90s and rain prospects slim to none.

FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS OF THE SHOOTING FILE IN
AS VICTIMS TELL THEIR STORIES
THE YOUNGEST INJURED IN THE MOVIE THEATRE MASSACRE WAS A 4 MONTH OLD BOY
HE WAS TREATED AND RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL
THE BABY, HIS MOTHER PATRICIA LEGARRETA, HER FOUR YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND HER FIANCE WERE AT THE THEATRE
HER FIANCE JAMIE ROHRS DESCRIBES THE TERROR DURING THE SHOOTING
My idea was don't let -- don't see him. If you see him, he can see you. Stay low. Stay -- just try to hide. And people are falling all around, like, you're just hearing screaming. Right next to me. I'm still standing. I don't know why -- how i'm not hit. But every time a bullet flashed, you just hear the sound and your ears are ringing. You're like, this one's going to kill me. This one -- this is it."
THE TWO OF THEM WERE SEPARATED DURING THE CHAOS
WHEN THEY MET UP AT THE HOSPITAL, ROHRS PROPOSED

"any place is vulnerable to the evil thats going on" Christine Rogers/Fort Myers
Christine Rogers says her routine of going to the movies isn't going to change-
"i think thats just the world we live in now" 2 sec Christine
What could change is how much she talks to her family about their safety -- this after the mass shooting at a midnight showing of the dark knight rises in colorado where 12 people were killed.
"truthful without scaring them because kids do really have to be taught." Christine
psychiatrist dr mabel lopez agrees to an extent -- saying what you tell them depends on a childs age and maturity level.
dr.mabel lopez/psychiatrist "just want to know is this going to happen to us or in our community and we have to reassure them we are as safe as we can be." 9 sec
with younger kids she suggests to tell them just that -- we are safe.
"they dont need to be exposed to this information as there is little value to it."
but with older kids parents should remind them that shootings are rare and to have a safety routine in place.
"it doesnt scare me as much as the thought." Krista Rogers/Fort Myers
the thought about what could happen if 13 year old krista rogers were in that situation.
"after this a lot of people should be aware of their surroundings and know whats out there." Krista Rogers/Fort Myers

FRIENDS OF COLORADO SHOOTING SUSPECT JAMES HOLMES DESCRIBE HIM AS "QUIET".
MANY CAN'T BELIEVE 24-YEAR-OLD IS BEHIND THE MASS SHOOTING
"Absolutely not,he wasn't aggressive he was pretty well humored, I mean he was kinda shy but that's not like shyness is an indicator of shooting up a movie theater."
HOLMES GREW UP IN SAN DIEGO AND GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL IN 2006.

LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE WEAPONS JAMES HOLMES ALLEGEDLY USED DURING THE SHOOTING.
HERE'S AN A-R 15.
THAT'S THE MILITARY'S VERSION OF A MACHINE GUN.
POLICE SAY HE ALSO USED A 8-70 REMINGTON 12-GAUGE SHOTGUN.
.AND A 40-GLOCK HANDGUN.
THE GLOCK IS A HANDGUN THE POLICE OFTEN USE.
HOLMES BOUGHT THEM LEGALLY FROM GUN SHOPS IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS.
HE ALSO BOUGHT SIX-THOUSAND ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION ONLINE.
THE POLICE CHIEF SAYS -- WITH THE ASSAULT RIFLE -- HOLMES HAD THE ABILITY TO FIRE *AT LEAST* 50 TO 60 ROUNDS A MINUTE -- THAT'S AT LEAST ONE SHOT A SECOND.

BARBARA WALTERS ALMOST ALWAYS GETS THE INTERVIEW SHE WANTS.
BUT, THIS TIME AROUND -- SHE MISSED OUT.
JEANNE MOOS REPORTS ON THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY.
Return to index of stories...
THIS IS THE STORY OF WHAT HAPPENS WHEN BARBARA WALTERS, THE QUEEN OF "THE GET", DOES NOT GET HER MAN. AND SEAN HANNITY DOES.
It is an interview that never took place. When we come back I will tell you why. It's like a mystery. woo woo woo.
THAT WAS 6 MINUTES INTO THE VIEW. BY 12 MINUTES AFTER, BARBARA WAS EXPLAINING HOW SHE'D FLOWN DOWN TO FLORIDA WEDNESDAY TO INTERVIEW GEORGE ZIMMERMAN, AN INTERVIEW SHE THOUGHT SHE'D BEEN GUARANTEED.
Zimmerman came in. He had already taken off the suit he was wearing for the interview with Hannity. wearing a t-shirt should have been my first clue.
BARBARA SAID ZIMMERMAN REFUSED TO DO THE INTERVIEW UNLESS ABC MET ONE CONDITION, WHICH BARBARA WOULDN'T AGREE TO AND WOULDN'T REVEAL. AFTER ANOTHER COMMERCIAL BREAK, BARBARA GOT GRILLED.
You know what that tells me, tells me he wants money. Yes or no? she can't say. Leave her alone.
I think the viewers want to know.
IF YOU MUST KNOW, NOSEY VIEWERS, ZIMMERMAN'S LAWYER CONFIRMED THAT HIS NEARLY BROKE CLIENT ASKED ABC FOR 30 DAYS STAY IN A HOTEL WITH SECURITY.
George was thinking I don't want money in my pocket I want my wife safe for a month.
MEANWHILE BACK AT THE VIEW, 32 MINUTES INTO THE SHOW.
I was just told Mr. Zimmerman wanted to talk to me on the phone. We will be back and who knows what we're gonna get.
BY 37 MINUTES IN.
We're still waiting to see if we're going to receive a call from George Zimmerman.
BUT WHILE THEY'RE WAITING, WHY NOT SQUEEZE IN A MARRIAGE PROPOSAL.
SHE'S A VIRGIN FROM TLC's "VIRGIN DIARIES" WHO'S BEEN SAVING HERSELF 'TILL MARRIAGE.
Will you marry me? yes
BUT WILL BARBARA CONSUMMATE HER INTERVIEW? 50 MINUTES INTO THE HOUR-LONG SHOW, WE FINALLY FIND OUT.
In my little earpiece I'm telling, Zimmerman called, yes, that he just called and Mr. Zimmerman, if you could not do the interview yesterday, I don't think we should do a quick one today.
NO QUICKIES FOR BARBARA WALTERS.
We will now continue our program and with the people who agreed to interviews and then come here.
MAYBE SHE DIDN'T GET HER MAN, BUT SHE DID GET BACK AT HIM.
JEANNE MOOS, CNN, NEW YORK.

THE SCHOOL FRANKLY WON'T TELL US MUCH ABOUT HIS GRADES, THE CLASSES HE TOOK, OR ANYTHING ELSE.
WE DO KNOW HE GAVE A STUDENT LECTURE THIS PAST MARCH ON SOMETHING CALLED "MICRO-RNA BIOMARKERS."
IF YOU LOOK IT UP, IT'S ABOUT AN EMERGING AREA OF NEUROSCIENCE; THE STUDY OF NERVES THAT RELATES TO CANCER RESEARCH.

SO HOW IS IT THIS HONOR STUDENT, THIS Ph.D. CANDIDATE, THIS BUDDING NEUROSCIENTIST BECOMES A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSON, DRESSED AND ACCORDING TO POLICE ARMED TO KILL?
"The suspect was dressed all in black, he was wearing a ballistic helmet, a tactical ballistic vest, ballistic leggings, a throat protector and a groin protector and a gas mask and black tactical gloves."
WAS THE PERSON DELUSIONAL, WAS THERE MENTAL ILLNESS INVOLVED?
AS WE TRY TO PIECE THIS TOGETHER, I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU WHAT NEW YORK CITY POLICE COMMISSIONER RAY KELLY HAD RELEASED ON WHAT HE LEARNED OF THE SUSPECT THAT MAY HAVE A TIE TO THE ACTUAL MOVIE.
"We have some information, I believe most of it public, clearly he looks like a deranged individual. He had his hair painted red, he said he was "the Joker."

IT'S ONE LUCKY BIRD.
AN OSPREY THAT WAS STARVING AND SUFFERING FROM THE HEAT IS NURSED BACK TO HEALTH.
YESTERDAY CROW RELEASED THAT YOUNG OSPREY ON CAPTIVA ISLAND.
THIS BIRD IS JUST ONE OF HUNDREDS OF ANIMALS THAT ARE TREATED BY CROW EVERY YEAR.
OFFICIALS WITH CROW BELIEVE THE YOUNG BIRD WAS KICKED OUT OF ITS NEST BY ITS PARENTS AND JUST WASN'T MATURE ENOUGH TO SURVIVE.

THE OSPREY WAS FOUND ABOUT A MONTH AGO ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN FORT MYERS BY SOME PEOPLE VISITING THE AREA.
IT WAS RELEASED ON CAPTIVA WHERE THERE IS A LARGER OSPREY POPULATION.

BARBARA POLLOS HAS BEEN IN THIS CHAIR MORE TIMES THAN SHE CAN REMEMBER.
SHE SUFFERS FROM WET MACULAR DEGENERATION WHICH IMPAIRS EYE SIGHT AND GETS WORSE WITH AGE.
FOR THE PAST SEVEN YEARS - SHE'S FELT THE POKE OF A NEEDLE EVERY COUPLE OF MONTHS.
"It's not a pain, more of a discomfort."
HER SIGHT IS SO BAD, THE 75 YEAR-OLD WOMAN HAS A HARD TIME DRIVING.
"I know where the lights are but can't tell the colors."
RIGHT NOW DOCTORS INJECT HER WITH 'ILEA.'
THEY CLAMP OPEN BARBARA'S EYES AND USE WHAT LOOKS LIKE A NORMAL NEEDLE.
BUT HER DOCTOR SAYS THERE'S A WAY TO MAKE THE WHOLE PROCESS SAFER AND MORE COMFORTABLE.
DOCTOR ALEXANDER EATON INVENTED A NEW DEVICE HE HOPES WILL HELP PREVENT INFECTIONS. AND HE'S DITCHING THE CLAMP - HOPING TO RELIEVE SOME OF THE DISCOMFORT AFTER TREATMENTS.
THE NEEDLE POPS OUT OF THE COVERING DURING THE INJECTION - A WAY TO KEEP THE NEEDLE CLEAN.
TODAY HE'S TESTING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME ON BARBARA.
AS PART OF HIS STUDY - DOCTOR EATON PERFORMS HIS NORMAL METHOD ON ONE EYE - AND USES THE NEW NEEDLE ON THE OTHER.
THEN ASKS BARBARA A SERIES OF QUESTIONS TO SEE WHICH METHOD SHE FINDS MORE COMFORTABLE.
A PROCESS HE'LL USE ON OTHER PATIENTS IN THE STUDY TO PERFECT HIS PRODUCT.
FOR BARBARA - A BETTER WAY TO IMPROVE HER SIGHT IS A BONUS AS SHE HOPES TO REGAIN MORE THAN HER VISION.
"I want to be more independent."

THE JURORS SAY.THERE'S NO FORENSIC EVIDENCE AT THIS POINT---NO DNA, NO FINERPRINTS AND NO WEAPON RECOVERED.
BUT POLICE SAY THE INVESTIGATION IS FAR FROM OVER.
THERE IS EVIDENCE THAT STILL NEEDS TO BE EXAMINED.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
