Gia, Forever Family - With thousand of Florida children in Foster Care small faith based agencies like this one 4Kids are giving hope to these children every day
Tom, 4Kids Executive Director: We started very small with just one lady and one church in 1997 fifteen years later we have been able to shelter over 16,000 children. This house where we are now is a home that a donor gave to us when he saw the need for siblings when they come into foster care they usually get split-up because very few people have enough room to take two or three or four kids in one home. And that is what 4Kids is about coordinating collaborating bringing the faith community together to be there to help that group of people.
Gia - So what is faith based foster care?
Tom: It is just the church being the church. Being there to help out a family a child. So they need to know somebody cares and when that one person shows true care true compassion true love for them and they know it is real, that gives them the hope they need to carry on day after day until they get through this.
Gia - And with so many children still waiting for that special kind of support. More and more are joining their cause.

PETE WILLIAMS REPORTS.
Return to index of stories...
Aurora, Colorado is painfully aware of the devastation of a shooting rampage. In 1993, a former employee of a family restaurant shot and killed four people who worked there and wounded a fifth.
Police said Nathan Dunlap was upset over being fired. He was convicted and is on Colorado's death row.
The shootings at Columbine High School in 1999 further traumatized the state, prompting it to make a change in its laws a year later.
. closing what some call the gun show loophole, that previously allowed purchases at gun shows without a federal background check.
But the kind of weapons used at Friday's shooting are commonly for sale nationwide, with only a few exceptions.
The handguns are legal to buy across the country, and the shotgun is one of the most popular long guns in the nation, widely used by hunters.
Only the semi-automatic rifle, able to accommodate a high-capacity ammunition clip, is restricted.
Five states ban its sale, four in the northeast -- New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. California is the fifth.
Both the rifle and the 100-round magazine found at the shooting scene would have been illegal under the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004
Some say the shooting is a vivid reminder of the need to make that kind of weapon harder to get:
LEGISLATORS ACROSS THIS COUNTRY SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID OF THE NRA AND THE GUN MANUFACTURERS. AND SHOULD BE STANDING UP TO SAY "WE'RE GONNA DO SOMETHING.' YOU'LL STILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO OWN A GUN, BUT WE CAN HELP PEOPLE.
But defenders of gun rights say restricting sales will not end mass shootings:
16:13:34
PUTTING RESTRICTIONS ON THE LAW ABIDING DOES NOT REALLY SEEM TO HAVE MUCH IMPACT, WOULDN'T HAVE MUCH IMPACT, AND IT WOULDN'T HAVE ANY IMPACT IN THIS CASE.
Officials say the weapons used in Friday's shooting were all purchased legally -- starting in May and ending two weeks ago -- at gun stores in the Denver area.

IT WOULD MIX A PATIENT'S TUMOR WITH A VIRUS THAT TARGETS AND KILLS CANCER CELLS.
SO FAR IT'S WORKED IN MICE.
INSTEAD OF SUPPRESSING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. THIS VACCINE WOULD GIVE THE IMMUNE SYSTEM A BOOST.

The immune system really wakes up and says hey wait a second this is something we want to attack and it attacks not only the virus but the cancer cells
THE CANADIAN RESEARCHERS SAY A SIMILAR VACCINE TO THEIRS COULD BE TESTED IN CLINICAL TRIALS IN THE NEXT YEAR.

"We've been hunting whale for thousands of years"
STEVE OOMITTUK IS MAYOR HERE. HE AND HIS TOWN ARE HOLDING OUT AGAINST SEEMINGLY THE INEVITABLE OIL EXPLORATION OFF THEIR SHORES, THEIR GARDEN AS HE CALLS IT.
65% OF THEIR DIET COMES FROM WHAT THEY CAN HUNT AND GATHER. THEIR PRIMARY SOURCE OF LIFE… WHALES.
"It feeds us, it clothes us. It shelters us. It's our spirituality. It gives us identity of who we are as a people."
HIS PEOPLE INUPIAT ESKIMOS THEY'VE HUNTED JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING AT SEA AND ON LAND SCRATCHING OUT AN EXISTENCE HERE FOR 2000 YEARS.
"BUT IT'S NOT JUST WALRUSES, SEALS AND WHALES THAT THE PEOPLE OF POINT HOPE RELY ON FOR FOOD. IT'S THESE BIRDS OOGHBAA OR MURR THAT COME HERE BY THE 100S OF THOUSANDS. THEY LAY THESE INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL DECORATIVE EGGS. EACH ONE LOOKS LIKE AN EASTER EGG."
THE EGGS… A YEARLY FAVORITE… THEY ONLY HAVE ABOUT WEEK TO COLLECT THEM BEFORE THE CHICKS INSIDE MATURE. TO COLLECT THEM, MEN BRAVE STEEP CLIFFS AND FLIMSY ROPES.
IT'S A DELICATE AND TENUOUS CYCLE.
"We live a cycle of life where we hunt different animals at different times. We know where they are going to be."
THIS IS THE FEAR… IF OIL SPILLS - EVEN FAR OFFSHORE - THE CURRENTS WILL BRING IT HOME, POSSIBLY TAKING OUT ONE LINK OF THE CHAIN… UPTURNING… EVERYTHING.
"Look at Exxon Valdez, Look at the Gulf of Mexico. They said nothing would happen… anything can happen."
FOR THE OUTSIDE WORLD, THERE IS LITTLE TRUST. IN THE 1800S INTERNATIONAL WHALERS HUNTED THE ANIMALS TO NEAR EXTINCTION. IN THE 1950S OPERATION CHARIOT WAS A PLAN TO MAKE A DEEPWATER PORT HERE BY EXPLODING 6 NUCLEAR BOMBS. AS PART OF IT LOCALS WERE FED RADIOACTIVE IODINE TO STUDY ITS EFFECTS. THEY WERE TOLD IT WAS MEDICINE. DISTRUST HERE MEASURED IN CENTURIES.
"We could go 300 miles that way."
OOMITTUK - SITTING AT A NOW ABANDONED TRADITIONAL HOME MADE OF WHALE BONES - SAYS SHELL IS MOVING TOO FAST, HE WANTS MORE STUDY.
"It does look like this is gonna happen.
"Yeah I can feel it. It's kinda scary to see what's gonna happen this summer."

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Today will mark another uptick in our shower and thunderstorm pattern as tropical moisture continues to settle across Southwest Florida.
This morning most locations will start off with plentiful sunshine and temperatures near 80°. A few more clouds will linger across southern Collier county as showers have persisted over the inland areas and continue to weaken.
Clouds will be on the increase through the day with scattered showers and storms getting a little bit of a kick start just after the lunchtime hour. Due to the clouds and the onset of the rain, temperatures will also be held down a bit into the lower 90s.
Tonight, skies will remain partly cloudy with a few lingering showers/storms with lows in the mid and upper 70s.
Higher than normal rain prospects are in the forecast for the start of the work week, before drier air moves back in by Wednesday. This will keep rain chances near 20% along with highs climbing into the mid 90s.
