Return to index of stories...
It was a pretty nice day across Southwest Florida, that's if you like the heat and humidity. Temperatures today have warmed into the middle 90s under abundant sunshine with just a few fair weather clouds across the area. As of early this afternoon, our radar remains quiet, however we may see one or two isolated showers/storms begin to pop with the vast majority of us staying dry.
Temperatures will be slow to cool tonight as many locations will hold into the lower to middle 80s through midnight, with temperatures dropping off into the upper 70s to near 80° by tomorrow morning.
Our Thursday will start off on the warm side with ample sunshine. Slightly drier air in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere will keep our rain chances on the lower end for one more day, with a few isolated showers and storms developing during the peak heating of the day.
Highs tomorrow will climb into the middle 90s and with plenty of humidity, the "feels like" temperature will soar well over 100°. If you are going to be outdoors for any lengthy period of time, remember to drink plenty of water, find shade, and take frequent breaks.
Rain prospects will gradually go up beginning on Friday and into the weekend as deeper tropical moisture returns to Southwest Florida. Scattered showers and storms will be a good bet primarily during the afternoon and evening hours as temperatures dip a bit closer to normal for this time of year.
In the tropics, Tropical Storm Ernesto continues to weaken as it heads for the extreme southern Bay of Campeche, before making a second landfall on the central Mexican coastline tomorrow. Elsewhere, we are keeping an eye on the remnants of Florence along with another tropical wave located about 750 miles west of the Cape Verde islands. The National Hurricane Center is giving this a medium chance for development as conditions become a bit more favorable for gradual strengthening.

51-YEAR-OLD HAL HILL IS THE ONE PERSON IN THIS WORLD THAT LIESA HILL thought
she could trust more than anyone: HER HUSBAND OF 14 YEARS, THE FATHER OF
HER TWO CHILDREN, AND A TRUSTEDPHYSICAN WHO SEES PATIENTS AT THIS OFFICE IN
CHATTANOOGA
GRFX
BUT IN THE emergency order she filed August 3 and just made public, LIESA
HILL EXPLAINED THAT SHE HAD BEEN SUFFERING FROM A MYSTERIOUS ILLNESS "FOR
SEVERAL MONTHS." AND "IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR, I FOUND MY HUSBAND PUTTING AN
UNIDENTIFIED SUBSTANCE IN MY MORNING COFFEE."
Christina Mincy. Liesa Hill's Lawyer. She wasn't sure, she suspected in
March, at which time she followed her instincts and called the police.
For five months, Liesa Hill says she lived in fear in the couple's home - as
INVESTIGATORS secretly TOOK SAMPLES OF THE COFFEE HER HUSBAND DELIVERED TO
HER BEDSIDE EVERY MORNING. For tests.
GRFX
THE LAB RESULTS CAME BACK LAST WEEK AND WERE SHOCKING: "EXTREME LEVELS" OF
BARIUM IN HER COFFEE - A TOXIC HEAVY METAL THAT'S POISONOUS AND CAUSES FLU-
LIKE SYMPTOMS.
Christina Mincy. "When we got the lab results back, no one was more
surprised than Liesa, that her fear had been confirmed, and it was actually
possible that her husband was trying to do her great harm."
GRFX
THE POLICE TOLD HER THAT "HER PREVIOUS SEVERE HEALTH ISSUES ARE CONSISTENT
WITH HEAVY METAL POISONING."
THIS MORNING, THEY TELL US NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED AT THIS POINT, BUT HER
HUSBAND IS NOT ALLOWED NEAR THEIR HOME.
Chief Randy Bowden. Lookout Mountain Police Department. This is and will be
a slow and methodical investigation.
IF THIS IS A CASE OF SPOUSAL POISONING, IT WOULDN'T BE THE FIRST
IN 2005, AMERICAN NANCY KISSEL WAS CONVICTED IN HONG KONG OF SPIKING HER
HUSBAND'S MILKSHAKE, BEFORE SHE KILLED HIM. AND IN THAT SAME YEAR, STACEY
CASTOR, THE SO CALLED "BLACK WIDOW," MURDERED HER SECOND HUSBAND BY
POISONING HIM WITH ANTI-FREEZE. SHE'S NOW SERVING 51 YEARS TO LIFE.

DOORS ARE ABOUT TO OPEN ON A NEW SCHOOL YEAR, BUT DELHI CHARTER IN RICHLAND PARISH IS RECEIVING A GRADE LETTER "F" FOR ONE OF ITS POLICIES, FROM THE AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION.
"Girls who are pregnant today deserve the right to be in class, just the same as women who are pregnant deserve the right to be in the workplace."
THE SCHOOL'S PREGNANCY POLICY IS UNDER FIRE.
A LETTER SENT BY THE A-C-L-U CALLS FOR THE EDUCATION LEADERS TO REVISE THE RULES.
"No matter what, there's no policy to justify kicking these girls out of class."
"School leaders are remaining tight-lipped at Delhi Charter about their pregnancy policy, and whether they issue pregnancy tests to a student they suspect is with child."
THE A-C-L-U SAYS IT'S A VIOLATION OF THE U-S CONSTITUTION TO FORCE A STUDENT TO TAKE A PREGNANCY TEST.
IF THE YOUNG TEEN IS INDEED GOING TO HAVE A BABY, THE POLICY STATES SHE MUST BE HOME SCHOOLED OR ATTEND A DIFFERENT SCHOOL.
"I think at Delhi, I mean, the whole thing is a very unfortunate situation."
THE GROUP SAYS THE POLICIES OPEN THE DOORS TO DISCRIMINATION, AS YOUNG GIRLS ARE TREATED DIFFERENTLY FROM THE GUYS.
THE DIRECTOR OF THE NON-PROFIT "LIFE CHOICES" IN MONROE HAS A DIFFERENT WAY OF APPROACHING A PREGNANT TEEN.
"The support and help would be very important to walk them through a very difficult situation."
THE A-C-L-U SAYS THEY WILL FILE A LAWSUIT OR A COMPLAINT WITH A FEDERAL AGENCY IF THE POLICY DOESN'T CHANGE.

A BRIGHT ORANGE TIDAL WAVE OF FLAMES SWEPT OVER LUTHER FRIDAY EVENING.
"When it came, it came quick. There wasn't no time to try to do anything."
MOST FAMILIES EVACUATED.
BUT JOHN WILSON THOUGHT HIS FIVE ACRE FARM.
HIS HUNTING DOGS, HIS FAMILY, WERE ALL OUT OF HARM'S WAY.
THE FIRE WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TURNPIKE, AFTER ALL.
"We might have just waited just a little too long."
JOHN AND SON JUSTIN DECIDED TO STAY BACK AND STOMP OUT SOME FLAMES ENCROACHING ON THEIR PROPERTY.
"When we turned around and looked back, there was a wall of fire higher than the house."
"When they realized that fire was beyond their control, they knew they had to get out. They ran for their vehicles but by then it was too late. Tires melting, interiors singed, the cars were inoperable. So they had no other choice but to ride out the fire here on the property, in the safest place they could find."
A QUARTER MILE AWAY, AN 8 FOOT DEEP FARM POND.
IT PROTECTED THEM, AND A FRIGHTENED BOX TURTLE FROM RAINING EMBERS.
"He was hot and he figured he needed water. So he didn't even give us a second thought. He just ran right between us and bailed out in the water. He was like, get over fellas, I need some water too."
JOHN SAYS IT WAS "HELL ON EARTH".
AND THEN, A SURPRISE PHONE CALL FROM A BRAVE NEIGHBOR.
"He says, 'where are you?' I said, 'we're in a pond.' He said, 'well, I'm coming to you.' I said, 'there's fire and flames all over the place, how you going to come here?' He said, 'I'll be there in a minute.'"
THAT NEIGHBOR CUT A PATH THROUGH THOSE FLAMES, RESCUED THE WILSONS AND SPED AWAY.
"We left with what we had on our back. But that's better than nothing."
