GOOD MORNING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
TODAY IS SATURDAY AUGUST 18TH
I'M CHRISTINA LUSBY.
BEFORE WE GET TO OUR BIG STORIES OF THE DAY -
LETS CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINER IN OUR STORMWARN 7 HURRICANE TRACKING CENTER.
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
A very moist airflow off the Gulf of Mexico will continue to keep Southwest Florida hot and humid through the weekend.
Partly sunny skies will greet us on our Saturday morning with a few showers and storms across the Gulf and our coastal locations. Through the morning and midday hours hit or miss downpours will move in across the urban corridor as the seabreeze gets going, with scattered storms developing east of I-75 during the afternoon. With plenty of moisture settled in overhead, a passing shower can't be ruled out at anytime or anyplace.
Highs will climb into the lower 90s, but when you factor in the humidity it will feel much hotter than what the thermometer is actually reading. Heat index values through the day will range from 100°-105°.
Temperatures will be slow to fall overnight with lows in the upper 70s. A few passing showers may drift ashore overnight, however most of the area should stay fairly dry.
Sunday will more than likely be a repeat of Saturday as our muggy onshore flow persists. We may manage to squeeze in a bit more sunshine during the day with showers and storms remaining in the forecast.
Tropical Storm Gordon is swirling in the Atlantic and continues to pose no threat to the eastern seaboard as it makes a run for the Azores. What was Tropical Depression #7 last week has regenerated into Tropical Storm Helene over the warm waters of the extreme southern portion of the Gulf of Mexico. This storm will make landfall sometime tomorrow over Mexico producing flooding rains. Another wave in the Eastern Atlantic may become a bit more organized over the next few days, but there's still plenty of time to watch this.

BUT ABC-7'S JULIAN JOHNSON FOUND SOME--WHO MIGHT SUE-- TO STOP THE PLAN.

JATAVIA LEE HAS LIVED IN PUBLIC HOUSING SINCE JANUARY.
AND ADMITS HER COMPLEX ISN'T PERFECT.
JATAVIA LEE, RESIDENT: I'm not going to lie it can be safer but as long as law enforcement do their job and not overdue their job
BUT SHE THINKS RESTRICTING WHO CAN AND CAN'T VISIT HER IS NOT THE WAY TO KEEP THE COMMUNITY SAFE.
JATAVIA LEE, RESIDENT: They could be out here seeing their baby momma, family, their mother, anything
MARCUS GOODSON, FM HOUSING AUTHORITY: The drug activity the criminal activity we don't want that on our properties at all and so we think an established policy will give it a little more strength
THE FORT MYERS HOUSING AUTHORITY WANTS TO KEEP OUT PEOPLE WHO HAVE FELONY DRUG, SEX, OR OTHER VIOLENT CRIME CONVICTIONS.IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE PEACE ON THEIR PROPERTIES.
SEVERE CONSEQUENCES ALSO EXTEND TO RESIDENTS WHO VIOLATE THE POLICY.
MARCUS GOODSON, FM HOUSING AUTHORITY: You could be evicted from your property if you are housing or having people come on the property who you know have been trespassed
WILLIE GREEN, COMMUNITY ACTIVIST: I am for having a nice community but not at the expense of freedom
BUT SOME LIKE COMMUNITY ACTIVIST WILLIE GREEN ARGUE THE NEW POLICY WOULD BREAK UP FAMILIES AND ALSO VIOLATE CIVIL LIBERTIES.
WILLIE GREEN, COMMUNITY ACTIVIST: If that same man was in prison his children could come visit him yet he cannot visit them in public housing
THE POLICY WOULD APPLY TO ALL SIX OF THE CITY'S HOUSING COMMUNITIES.
ALTHOUGH SOME RESIDENTS THINK THEY CAN TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES.
JATAVIA LEE, RESIDENT: I'm not going to look after a 25 year old if you want to sit on the porch okay just don't make my community look bad
So next Tuesday housing authority board members will meet right here behind to make a final decision on the policy which if passed Mr. Greene says he is ready to file a class action lawsuit. In FM JJ NBC-2

MADDISON KANE KNOWS HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOPPING.
THIS COLLEGE SOPHOMORE SPENT TODAY LOOKING THROUGH THE AISLE OF A LOCAL THRIFT STORE.
"50 percent of my wardrobe, I'd say is thrift store stuff so I've saved a lot of money."
SAVING BY PICKING UP VINTAGE AND DESIGNER NAMES AT A FRACTION OF RETAIL.
"And compared to stores like Forever 21 and Urban stuff, you can find the same stuff and it's like 90 percent cheaper."
PENNY PINCHING PARENTS KNOW KIDS CAN QUICKLY GROW OUT OF THEIR CLOTHES, SO LOOKING FOR BARGAINS AT THRIFT AND CONSIGNMENT STORES CAN HAVE A HUGE IMPACT IN SAVINGS ON THE FAMILY BUDGET.
"I think it's a great selection and then price wise you get at least, I would say 50 percent off if not more."
JUST LIKE THE MALLS, THIS GOODWILL STORE SAYS BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIME IS ONE OF THEIR BUSIEST OF THE YEAR. THEY SAY THRIFT STORE SHOPPERS INCLUDE ALL RANGES OF AGE, STYLE AND INCOME, THE ONE COMMON THREAD. THE DESIRE TO SAVE MONEY.
"No more than 20 bucks for an entire outfit. And that can include shoes and accessories and everything else."
"So how much can you expect to save at a thrift store? This gap dress shirt is selling for 4 dollars. These 7 jeans would probably cost you 100 dollars at a regular retail store, here they are 20 bucks."
BUT YOU CAN'T COUNT ON FINDING THOSE JEANS EVERY TIME YOU COME. IN FACT THE BEST ADVICE FOR BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING AT THE THRIFT STORE. YOU HAVE TO BE FLEXIBLE.
"Well that's part of the fun because you never know what you're going to find."
"You've got to be persistent because we turn over items every single day."
"You can't go with something in mind, cause if you go oh, i'm going to find a blazer today, you can't really do that."

SCRIPT:
TO FIND OUT HOW EASY IT IS TO BUY A PET TIGER
DH: "GETTING WIRED UP."
. MY COLLEAGUES AND I WORE HIDDEN CAMERAS AND POSED AS FIRST TIME CAT
BUYERS.
Dan: 01:16:05 How many tigers do ya have?
JIM: 01:16:06 Twenty-nine.
JIM Hofferber owns THE "ANIMAL HAVEN ZOO" IN WEYUWEGA, WISCONSIN. one of
the ROUGHLY ONE-THOUSAND SO-CALLED "roadside zoos" in America today.
THESE BACKYARD ZOOS HAVE BECOME EXTREMELY CONTROVERSIAL. AFTER A ZOO OWNER
IN ZANESVILLE, OHIO RELEASED ALL OF HIS ANIMALS. AND KILLED HIMSELF.
PROVOKING POLICE TO KILL THE ANIMALS.
SOT: Sit on him give him a big old hug
BACKYARD ZOOS HAVE ALSO BEEN CRITICIZED FOR LETTING VISITORS CUDDLE WITH
PREDATORS.
Nats kid screaming.
. WHICH HAS RESULTED IN INJURIES. AND DEATH.
Back in Wisconsin, JIM HOFFERBER DOESN'T ALLOW PEOPLE TO CUDDLE WITH TIGERS.
. BUT HE DID OFFER TO GIVE US ONE. FOR FREE.
THIS IS ONE OF SIX STATES WHERE IT'S PERFECTLY LEGAL TO BUY AND SELL A PET
TIGER WITH LITTLE TO NO PAPERWORK
SOT: She's very nice, very friendly.
NOT SO FRIENDLY, THOUGH, WHEN I WENT IN FOR A CLOSER LOOK.
NATS - huge growl
DAN: If one of these cats got out, what could. what could they do to ya?
JIM: First thing you do is you go to the house, get the 30-odd-six, make
sure the gate's shut over there, and shoot the son-of-a-bitch.
WHILE IN OUR INITIAL CONVERSATION HE TOLD US WE DIDN'T NEED ANY PAPERWORK
AT ALL WHEN WE ARRIVED HE DID ASKED FOR A LETTER FROM THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT
AND A USDA LICENSE WHICH REQUIRES A SITE VISIT.
BUT HE QUICKLY ADDED NEITHER IS DIFFICULT TO GET.
WHEN I REVEALED WHO I REALLY WAS JIM'S WIFE WAS NOT PLEASED.
SOT: You have no right barging in here like you were doing. like we're
doing something illegal.
CORRECT, BUT.
Dan: You really don't have any way of knowing whether I'll be responsible
down the line.
JIM: Absolutely not. But nobody that gave me a tiger knew that I would be
responsible.
AND THAT'S THE RUB: IN SOME STATES. ANYONE CAN GET TIGER. AND YOU NEVER
KNOW WHO WILL BE RESPONSIBLE.
