FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Now that Isaac is well removed from Southwest Florida, our weather continues to improve as we get back to a typical late August pattern.

Temperatures this morning will be quite warm and muggy with some high cloudiness overhead. More sunshine to start means warmer afternoons as highs climb into the lower 90s with heat index values in the low 100s.

A stray shower along the coast can't be ruled out first thing in the morning, but with high pressure beginning to nose it's way in across the Peninsula, isolated showers/storms should hold off until the afternoon under a partly sunny sky.

Tonight, a few clouds will linger overhead with mostly dry conditions and lows will range from 80° along the coast to the middle 70s deeper inland.

As we round out the work week and head into a holiday weekend our mornings should start off sunny with the chance for isolated showers or storms each and every afternoon.

As far as the tropics, Isaac is still a tropical storm and continues to bring heavy rains and winds along the northern Gulf Coast as it drifts off to the north. There is also Tropical Storm Kirk, but this one is in the mid-Atlantic and will recurve out to sea without having any impact on Southwest Florida. There is another tropical wave almost 800 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands. The National Hurricane Center is giving this a high chance of development over the next day or two, however most of the models are predicting it will take a similar path to Kirk and stay well out to sea. YOU'RE FAMILIAR WITH PRE-PAID DEBIT CARDS.

A SAN DIEGO COMPANY USES THAT CONCEPT IN A VERY CLEVER WAY --

PUTTING PLASTIC IN THE HANDS OF *TEENS.

TEACHING THEM TO BUDGET THEIR MONEY,

BUT ALSO KEEPING PARENTS IN THE LOOP.

BOB HANSEN EXPLAINS. Return to index of stories...

GIVING KIDS CREDIT CARDS-PKG

THERE ARE SO MANY PLACES OUR TEENAGERS CAN SPEND THEIR MONEY. FROM FOOD TO PHONES. SO HOW CAN YOU TEACH THEM TO BUDGET THEIR DOLLARS?

STEFANIE MULLEN USES A SPEND SMART CARD.

"It's a nice budgeting plan and i think it's made them more responsible for sure with their money."

STEFANIE'S TWO OLDEST BOYS USE A RECHARGEABLE DEBIT CARD FROM A COMPANY NAMED BILL MY PARENTS. IT'S A PRE-PAID MASTER CARD. BUT WITH SOME UNIQUE FEATURES.

"We block the card at bad places. If there are places that teens shouldn't be attempting to use the card, the card is not going to work there."

"Another advantage of this system, every time your kids pulls out that plastic, you get a text telling you how much they spent and where they spent it."

"It texts me every time they spend. I like to joke that it's a GPS system for them. I can tell where they are and where they are spending money, it's great."

"It was a little creepy at first. But when it comes down to it i don't spend too much stuff on things they shouldn't be able to see."

BUT NOT ONLY DOES STEFANIE KNOW WHERE KEENAN AND NOAH ARE SPENDING THEIR MONEY. THE BOYS ALSO GET REGULAR UPDATES ON THEIR OWN SPENDING.

"Well with the text that it sends, it tells you how much you have left as well as how much you spent. So you know how much you have to get you through the month."

THE IDEA IS LESS TO SPY ON YOUR CHILDREN. AND MORE TO TEACH THEM HOW TO BE MORE RESPONSIBLE WITH THEIR MONEY.

"And then the teen has to learn budgeting. The teen can watch how the card is being used and they can figure out, oh my goodness, i'm about to run out of money here, I really learn to start budgeting."

THE SPEND SMART CARD COSTS ABOUT 4-DOLLARS A MONTH. WITH SOME ADDITIONAL CHARGES FOR A-T-M OR OTHER USES. STEFANIES SAYS THAT'S A SMALL PRICE TO PAY TO TEACH HER CHILDREN HOW TO HANDLE THEIR MONEY.

"At the beginning I was the one who spent all of it, he saved it, so I had to figure out a balance."

"I have a limit, I know what I can spend and what I can't spend during the month so it definitely helps."

THE CARD IS TARGETED TO TEENAGE USERS. TEACHING THEM TO BUDGET THEIR MONEY WITH A DEBIT CARD. BEFORE THEY MOVE ON TO A BIGGER CHALLENGE. THE CREDIT CARD. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WX WALL
