"Showers increasing Wednesday"
A little boost in our rain chance is in order this Wednesday, but rain coverage will be fairly scattered with lots of places staying dry. The new wrinkle in today's forecast, however, is we'll see the possibility for a few morning showers, especially for areas close to the coast and the urban corridor. A few hit-or-miss showers will stay close to Highway 41 and I-75 through the early afternoon, and then a stronger onshore flow today will carry the bulk of the rain deep inland later in the day.
Aside from having a few extra morning and afternoon showers around, we'll still be in store for a good amount of sunshine along with some pretty warm temperatures. Our afternoon highs should only warm to the upper 80s and lower 90s, though, with a stronger breeze coming off the Gulf of Mexico to prevent many mid 90s.
Forecast models are in good agreement we'll stay in this weather pattern all the way through the end of the week with some days bringing a few more showers than others. The general rule for those of us along the coast and the urban corridor is our showers will arrive earlier in the day. For those of us east of I-75, the majority of the rain will get carried our way later in the afternoon and evening.
By the upcoming weekend, mostly likely the latter part of the weekend, moisture will start to increase as a weather system dips into Central Florida. This will most likely lead to higher rain chances for us along with more cloud cover.
In the tropics, the Leslie continues its slow motion to the north as a Tropical Storm, but we may see the storm strengthen into a hurricane once the wind shear eases up a bit. Leslie will come close to making a direct impact with Bermuda this weekend, but the impact on the U.S. mainland will be minimal with the storm bringing some higher surf to the U.S. east coast this week. Leslie could make a close approach to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland by next week as the storm starts to weaken. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Michael continues to slowly strengthen in the open Atlantic, but this will be yet another fish storm and no threat to land.

FOR MELISSA CUMMINS -- THE NEWS THAT HER SON HAD SKIN CANCER WAS A SHOCK.
"I was sick. I actually dropped down and couldn't talk on the phone."
AND WHILE THE MARYLAND FAMILY OFTEN SPENT TIME OUTDOORS -- HUNTING, FISHING AND ON THE BOAT -- CUMMINS SAYS SHE WAS VIGILANT ABOUT SKIN PROTECTION.
"They were not outside without hats, bonnets as babies, sunscreen always gets put on to the point that my boys fuss at me."
DOCTORS AGREE THAT SKIN CANCER AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE IS STILL UNCOMMON. BUT THE RATES ARE INCREASING AT AN ALARMING RATE.
DR. BERNARD COHEN, THE DIRECTOR OF PEDIATRIC DERMATOLOGY AT THE JOHNS HOPKINS CHILDRENS CENTER IN BALTIMORE, SAYS 10 YEARS AGO HE NEVER SAW SKIN CANCER IN A CHILD, BUT NOW HE'S SEEING A FEW CASES A YEAR.
"Commensurate with the adult skin cancer epidemic, children are not that far behind. Clearly, people are spending more time out in the sun and getting sun exposure and kids are getting a ton of sun exposure early in life."
COHEN SAYS IT'S NOT JUST MELANOMA ON THE RISE. HE'S SEEING MORE INCIDENTS OF LESS SERIOUS BASAL AND SQUAMOUS CELL CANCERS AS WELL. DOCTORS CAN'T POINT TO ANY DEFINITIVE REASONS FOR THE INCREASE. BUT COHEN BELIEVES GENETICS AND MORE EXPOSURE TO ULTAVIOLET LIGHT ARE DEFINITE FACTORS.
"I think some of the problems in children under the age of 12 is that we don't understand what it means for them lifelong."
FOR EXAMPLE, THE CHANCE OF RECURRENCE AFTER A MELANOMA CAN BE AS HIGH AS 50 PERCENT. BUT COHEN WORRIES THAT IN A CHILD WHO HAS YEARS AND YEARS LEFT TO LIVE, THAT CHANCE COULD BE MUCH HIGHER.
THAT'S WHY MELISSA CUMMINS SAYS SHE'S CONSTANTLY CHECKING ALL OF HER CHILDREN'S SKIN.
"People don't think kids are going to get skin cancer and it doesn't discriminate. It doesn't matter how old you are and my only thing is to be aware of what's on your own body."
