HELLO-1SHOT PUSH

GOOD MORNING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

TODAY IS SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 8TH.

I'M JOE ROETZ.

BEFORE WE GET TO OUR BIG STORIES OF THE DAY - LETS CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINER WITH OUR STORMWARN 7 FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

High pressure to our south and a frontal boundary to our north, will keep us in a moist tropical flow off the Gulf of Mexico for Saturday. This will keep a stray shower or two in the forecast along our coastal areas during the morning hours.

Through the day, showers and storms will be few and far between as they get pushed deeper inland with the vast majority of Southwest Florida under partly sunny skies. Temperatures will work their way back into the lower 90s along the urban corridor, with a few upper 80s located across our beach locations.

Tonight, skies will go mostly clear and lows will settle into the middle 70s with mainly dry weather.

We're watching an area of disturbed weather in the central Gulf of Mexico, which has ties to former Hurricane Isaac. Development of this system into a depression is highly unlikely as it is fighting some dry air and upper level wind shear.

By Sunday, this low pressure area will link up with an approaching cold front bringing an increased chance for showers and thunderstorms beginning late Sunday through early next week, with some slightly drier air building in by mid to late week.

Elsewhere in the tropics, Tropical Storm Leslie and Hurricane Michael will continue to swirl in the open waters of the Atlantic and will have no impact on our local weather. Return to index of stories...

SINGING IN THE CAR SEEMS HARMLESS ENOUGH.

BUT A NEW STUDY HAS SOME SURPRISING FINDINGS.

DOCTOR FRANK MCGEORGE EXPLAINS. Return to index of stories...

SINGING IN THE CAR-PKG

DO YOU LIKE TO SING ALONG TO YOUR FAVORITE SONGS BEHIND THE WHEEL?

I'M MEDICAL EXPERT DOCTOR FRANK MCGEORGE.

WHILE YOUR PERFORMANCE MAY BE AMUSING TO YOUR FELLOW DRIVERS. A NEW STUDY FINDS IT'S HAVING A SERIOUS EFFECT ON YOUR DRIVING ABILITIES. AND *NOT* HOW YOU MIGHT THINK.

"I do a lot of singing in the car. I'm not a very good singer, but you know, I try."

NO MATTER *HOW* YOU SING.

"I like all of the songs that I can't sing, like luther vandross songs."

OR *WHAT* YOU SING.

"I like all kinds of music and i'm singing all of it all the time.

"Whatever is on. oldies usually."

OR EVEN *WHAT LANGUAGE* YOU SING IN.

AN AWFUL LOT OF US ADMIT *SINGING* IN THE CAR.

NOW A NEW AUSTRALIAN STUDY FINDS SINGING BEHIND THE WHEEL MAKES DRIVING SEEM MORE *MENTALLY DEMANDING*. AND THAT MAKES IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR MOST PEOPLE TO MAINTAIN THEIR SPEED.

"Driving performance changes when you're listening to music and singing. You actually tend to slow down. You actually stay more centered in your lane. You become a little bit more careful."

BUT SINGING ALSO SLIGHTLY *REDUCES* YOUR REACTION TIME. MAKING YOU *SLOWER* TO RESPOND TO PEDESTRIANS OR OTHER HAZARDS.

"It does actually kind of distract you because you're thinking about the song moreso than the traffic."

PSYCHOLOGISTS SAY WE SUBCONSCIOUSLY REALIZE HOW DISTRACTING MUSIC CAN BE. THINK ABOUT IT. WHEN YOU'RE DRIVING IN HARD RAIN OR LOTS OF SNOW. WHAT'S THE FIRST THING YOU TEND TO DO? REACH OVER AND TURN OFF THE RADIO.

"That's smart and maybe as a culture we need to do that a little bit more. Particularly in driving conditions where there are lots of pedestrians, potential distractions, those sorts of things."

"The bottom line. when we're driving, we really need to just drive. Save the drum solo for the stop lights. or better yet, your driveway. Back to you!" Return to index of stories...

It doesn't tell them anything about the people who were murdered there."

FL BOY LOCKED IN ROACH CABINET-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS --

ONE GLANCE AT THE DEPLORABLE CONDITIONS IS ENOUGH TO MAKE NEIGHBORS HERE ANGRY.

"That's disgusting. That's really dirty. Like, why would someone even want to live there?"

THIS IS THE KITCHEN CABINET THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE SAYS LORI HAMILTON LOCKED A FOUR-YEAR-OLD BOY IN ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS FOR HOURS AT A TIME.

THE REASON? BECAUSE HE KEPT HER UP AT NIGHT.

THE ARREST AFFIDAVIT SAYS THE BOY SUFFERED BITES FROM SPIDERS AND ROACHES AND EVEN WENT TO THE BATHROOM ON HIMSELF BECAUSE HE WAS IN THERE FOR SO LONG.

"I can never imagine doing that to a child. No matter what they did."

"I know you can get mad sometimes at them but you just can't do stuff like that."

NEIGHBORS SAY HAMILTON MOVED INTO THIS HOME ON CHERRY TREE DRIVE

THE REPORTED ABUSE TOOK PLACE AT A DIFFERENT HOME, POSSIBLE THE ONE SHE MOVED FROM.

HAMILTON FACED A JUDGE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON ONE COUNT OF CHILD ABUSE.

THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE WON'T RELEASE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SHE AND THE BOY TO PROTECT HIS IDENTITY.

HAMILTON'S SISTER DEFENDED HAMILTON, CALLING HER A SOFT-HEARTED WOMAN NOT CAPABLE OF ABUSING KIDS.

"Never. Not even in a corner. Not in a.they're saying closet. Nothing. She's not like that."

SHE BELIEVES HAMILTON'S OLD ROOMMATE IS RESPONSIBLE, AND THEY PLAN TO PUT UP A TOUGH FIGHT THROUGH THE END. Return to index of stories...

MAIN WEATHER-WX WALL

SCRIPT:

NATS

IN ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACES ON EARTH. A DEADLY DISEASE IS LURKING.

NATS

YOSEMITE PARK RANGERS ARE WARNING EVERY VISITOR ABOUT THE OUTBREAK OF

HANTAVIRUS. SPREAD BY RODENTS.

SOT TOURIST MOS - ACTUALLY HAD A MOUSE RUN ACROSS MY HEAD! DEFINITELY SCARED

ME PRETTY GOOD.

ALREADY 8 PEOPLE ARE KNOWN TO HAVE CONTRACTED THE ILLNESS. AS OF TODAY, 3

HAVE DIED -- IN CALIFORNIA, PENNSYLVANIA, AND WEST VIRGINIA.

AND THERE MAY BE MORE CASES. AS FAR AWAY AS FRANCE!

CHILDS SOT - THIS OUTBREAK APPEARS TO BE UNUSUAL IN TERMS OF THE NUMBER OF

PEOPLE AFFECTED AND CERTAINLY THE NUMBER OF DEATHS

THE OUTBREAK WAS FIRST TRACED TO THE POPULAR CURRY VILLAGE CAMPSITE -- WHERE

RODENTS HAD BURROWED INTO THE INSULATION OF TENTS.

OFFICIALS NOW BELIEVE A 2ND CAMPSITE IN TUOLOMNE MEADOWS WAS ALSO INFECTED.

LAST WEEK, WARNINGS LIKE THESE WENT OUT TO 10-THOUSAND PEOPLE WHO VISITED

CURRY VILLAGE SINCE JUNE. THIS WEEK NOTICES WENT OUT TO AN ADDITIONAL 19-

THOUSAND TUOLOMNE VISITORS.

29-THOUSAND RECENT PARK VISITORS IN ALL!

CHILDS SOT - THIS IS POSSIBLY THE GREATEST POINT CLUSTER WHICH IS OCCURRED

IN THE UNITED STATES THAT I AM AWARE OF.

EARLY SYMPTOMS -- INCLUDING FATIGUE, FEVER, AND CHILLS -- CAN TAKE UP TO 6

WEEKS TO APPEAR.

THOSE QUICKLY GIVE WAY TO COUGHING AND BREATHING PROBLEMS AS THE LUNGS FILL

WITH FLUID.

THE WORST PART IS: THERE IS NO KNOWN TREATMENT OR CURE!

CHILDS SOT - THERE IS REALLY NOTHING YOU CAN DO PREEMPTIVELY IF YOU WERE

EXPOSED TO HANTA VIRUS.

FOR ONE AMERICA'S OLDEST AND MOST POPULAR NATIONAL PARKS. A SERIOUS THREAT

.

A WORLDWIDE OUTBREAK.
