ROMNEY MADE SOME CONTROVERSIAL CMMENTS,
BUT HE'S NOT APOLOGIZING.
AND LATE LAST NIGHT --
THE CAMPAIGN HURRIED TO SET UP A NEWS CONFERENCE FOR THE CANDIDATE TO EXPLAIN.
ABC'S TAHMAN BRADLEY REPORTS.
Return to index of stories...
This morning, the Romney campaign is in crises mode -- scrambling to explain
a secretly recorded tape where Romney tells wealthy donors nearly half of
all Americans see themselves as "victims."
Mother Jones, a left-leaning magazine, posted clips of what they say is
Romney talking at a fundraiser back in May.
Mother Jones did not release Romney's full remarks.
In one of the clips, the candidate says there's a number of Americans who
will vote for President Obama no matter what.
AUDIO SOT - Romney
"THERE ARE 47 PERCENT WHO ARE WITH HIM, WHO ARE DEPENDENT UPON GOVERNMENT,
WHO BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE VICTIMS, WHO BELIEVE THE GOVERNMENT HAS A
RESPONSIBILITY TO CARE FOR THEM, WHO BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE ENTITLED TO
HEALTH CARE, TO FOOD, TO HOUSING, TO YOU-NAME-IT."
In another clip, Romney talks about voters who do not pay income taxes.
AUDIO SOT - Romney
"SO MY JOB IS NOT TO WORRY ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE. I'LL NEVER CONVINCE THEM THEY
SHOULD TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND CARE FOR THEIR LIVES. WHAT I HAVE
TO IS CONVINCE THE FIVE- TO TEN-PERCENT IN THE CENTER."
The Obama campaign seized on Romney's comments. Campaign manager Jim Messina
, saying in a statement:
"It's shocking that a candidate for President of the United States
would go behind closed doors and declare to a group of wealthy donors that
half the American people view themselves as 'victims,' entitled to handouts,
and are unwilling to take 'personal responsibility' for their lives."
At a quickly arranged press conference late last night, Romney tried to
explain his words.
SOT Romney
"IT'S NOT ELEGANTLY STATED. LET ME PUT IT THAT WAY. / OF COURSE,
INDIVIDUALS ARE GOING TO TAKE RESPONSIBLITY FOR THEIR LIFE. AND MY CAMPAIGN
IS ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE TO TAKE MORE RESPONSIBLITY AND BECOMING EMPLOYED
AGAIN."
Mitt Romney went on to say he hopes all of his remarks from that event would
be released. Mother Jones says the person who shot the video does not work
for the Obama campaign or the Democratic party.

E FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.Often times around Southwest Florida, wind direction is a critical player in determining how our weather unfolds each day. Today looks like one of those days when a change in wind direction will lead to some considerable changes in our weather starting today.
Winds have now started shifting from the southeast to the southwest, which will open the door for higher rain chances over the next couple days.
The rain will also get an earlier start both today and Wednesday, so look for scattered showers to develop during the early morning, moving from the coast and spreading inland. As we progress through the morning , the showers will likely increase in coverage and intensity. It looks as though the prime time for rain today for most of us will be during the middle of the day from the late morning through the early afternoon.
Much of the rain will build inland later in the day, but we'll also be watching for the possibility of more storms rolling in from the northwest this evening or tonight. The bottom line is today will be one of those days where the air unsettled and moist enough that we can't promise any part of the day will be completely dry.
Even through the overnight we'll see the potential for some isolated rain and rumbles of thunder, and by Wednesday morning showers will again start moving in off the gulf.
Not only will we see a change in wind direction over the next couple days, but we'll also notice a change in wind speed. Winds will ramp up a bit during the day, making our weather a little breezy. Look for wind gusts to peak near 20-25 mph.
By Thursday rain coverage will start to drop a little, but there will still be some scattered showers around, primarily during the afternoon.
The threat of scattered late-day showers and storms continues Friday and into the upcoming weekend.
