We're on the third floor inside the cape coral police department -- this is what's called dispatch.
If you live in or are traveling in the city, this is where you're distress call, you pleas for help will go when an emergency happens.
The call will come to one of theses desks -- where an operator will try as quick as they can to get you help.
In life or death scenarios, police officers say every second counts.
Take nats of 911 call
A more than 7 minute tirade lands 56 year old Karen hallett in the slammer.
Police officers claim her three weekend phones calls drained valuable resources, forced them to respond for no reason, and tied up dispatch operators.
Take nats
Caller: "Okay, thank you. I won't dial you again."
Operator: "Don't disconnect on me yet. Let me know when you're with the officers, Karen. I have two of them at your unit."
Investigators tell us -- They went out to her house along cape coral parkway not once, not twice, but three times.
Every time -- they argue she was never in danger.
Officers counter the real cause for concern is her waste of dispatchers' time.
Lt. Anthony Sizemore, CCPD spokesperson
3927 "it's simple math. When they're are so many terminals for 911 and so many calls, you need all your resources. When seconds count, you need that time."
Cape coral police officers tell us it's a rarity for them to actually arrest someone for misusing 911.
They explain dispatch does handle a lot of what they call nuisance calls like a person complaining of high water bills or trash in the road.
Officers stress only call 911 in a real emergency -- so help for someone
in real danger can arrive as quickly as possible.
At the cape coral police department, Steve campion, abc7.

CLOUDS CONTINUE - SHOWERS ON THE WAY
A lot of moisture continues to ride over south Florida and we can expect skies to stay mostly cloudy tonight. The temperatures will drop to the lower 70's tonight as only a few showers pop up on radar after sunset. There is a frontal boundary still draped across the area and this front will gradually move toward us tomorrow. This would argue for more showers on Wednesday, and possibly a thunderstorm in the afternoon. Although it's not clear-cut in the computer models for tomorrow, I would not be surprised to see a few showers before noon as well. Our warm and humid weather will continue tomorrow with a high in the upper 80's - just shy of 90 degrees.
Looking ahead to the rest of the week it appears that we have several more days of variably cloudy skies and scattered rain showers or storms. With a bit more sunshine in play we should top out around 90 on Thursday, Friday and through the weekend. The long-range forecast shows another front moving in on Monday next week. Right now it looks like this would mean more showers next week but not cooler weather or a drop in humidity.

WHEN MICHELE STAPLETON FOUND OUT SHE HAD BREAST CANCER, THE BUSY MANICURIST WASN'T TOO WORRIED AT FIRST.
"And so I said, oh I'll have a lumpectomy no big deal and they said no the tumor was too large and that I'd have to have a mastectomy."
AS A PRECAUTION THE MOTHER OF TWO HAD BOTH BREASTS REMOVED. HER NEXT STEP--RECONSTRUCTION. BUT DOCTOR ANKIT DESAI SAYS THE PROCESS CAN OFTEN BE LONG AND PAINFUL. THERE'S USUALLY NOT ENOUGH SKIN TO INSERT AN IMPLANT AFTER A MASTECTOMY, SO DOCTORS HAVE TO STRETCH THE PATIENT'S TISSUE WITH AN EXPANDER AND INJECT SALINE INTO IT.
"They have to have a needle that's stuck through the skin. Sometimes that can cause some discomfort for patients."
AS PART OF STUDY MICHELE IS TRYING OUT A NEW TISSUE EXPANDER USING A REMOTE CONTROL. IT ALLOWS PATIENTS TO EXPAND THEIR BREAST TISSUE AT THEIR OWN PACE IN THE COMFORT OF THEIR OWN HOME.
"I don't like needles. I don't like pain and if I can control what I do as far as how I expand, it was exciting to me."
THE REMOTE CONTROL IS PLACED AGAINST THE EXPANDER AND INSTEAD OF SALINE INJECTIONS CARBON DIOXIDE IS RELEASED.
"And you press the button one time and that's it. It's delivered a dose."
PATIENTS GO FROM WEEKLY VISITS AND INJECTIONS FOR SEVERAL MONTHS, TO ONLY HAVING TO COME IN TWICE AND CAN BE READY FOR BREAST IMPLANTS IN JUST WEEKS.
"You have control over it. That's the glory of it."
GIVING PEOPLE LIKE MICHELE MORE TIME FOR WHAT MATTERS.
"This is Addison, she's 5 and Avery is a lovely 2-year-old and she, they keep me busy."

A week after police officer Philip Standefer pushed her out of the way of
this oncoming car--- and almost certainly saved her life. Sarah Beaty still
struggles to put her gratitude into words.
Sarah Beaty, 22:52:30
"Thank you' doesn't really cover the fact that I'm here and talking."
That night in Lubbock, Texas-it was the 19 year old student talking to
officers about a fender bender she'd just witnessed.
Watch again as a van--with an alleged drunk driver behind the wheel plows
into a police car---sending it barreling toward them. Officer Standefer
grabs Beaty and pushes her to safety. the other cop barely escapes too.
Officer Philip Standefer 22:49:27
Lubbock Police
"I knew that she didn't see the car coming. / I just moved and got her out
of the way and wasn't quick enough to get out of the way myself."
In fact, while Sarah was safe. the man who just saved her was actually
pinned between those cars.
Philip Standefer: 22:51:00
"I looked at my leg and it didn't look like it was pointing in the right
direction."
Sarah Beaty:22:48:54
"I remember sitting on the concrete and closing my eyes again because I wasn
't sure if I was going to open them up."
Sarah escaped with a few scrapes on her face--- Officer Standefer's leg is
still bruised but remarkably he has nothing more serious than a few pulled
muscles.
Philip Standefer: 22:53:35
"My job is to serve and protect people. I'm just humbled I got the
opportunity to do so."
Sarah Beaty 22:55:03
"If he hadn't been there, I don't know what would have happened to me. I
call him a hero."
A humble hero who nearly sacrificed himself to save a stranger.
Ryan Owens, ABC News, Dallas.
