PKG SCRIPT:
NATS - ESPN announcement
"THE DEAL IS DONE."
Regular NFL officials return to work tonight after their union and the
league reached a tentative agreement to end the lockout that began in June.
NATS - ESPN announcement
"THE REPLACEMENT OFFICIALS WILL BE REPLACED."
The officials' union still needs to approve the eight year deal.
But the NFL commissioner lifted the lockout so the regular refs can call
tonight's Browns-Ravens game in Baltimore.
In a statement, Commissioner Roger Goodell said: "We look forward to
having the finest officials in sports back on the field, and I want to give
a special thanks to NFL fans for their passion. Now it's time to put the
focus back on the teams and players where it belongs."
This shocking finish to Monday night's Packers and Seahawks game might have
been the breaking point. During the final play two replacement refs made
different calls.
NATS - ESPN ANNOUNCER SOUND
"THIS IS COMICAL TO ME, REALLY."
ultimately ruling what looked like an interception, a touchdown --
infuriated announcers, players and fans.
MOS-
"ROGER GOODELL, BRING YOUR GUYS BACK, NOW."
SOT Andrew Brandt, ESPN
"BEYOND YOU AND I AND THE SPORTS WORLD AND FOOTBALL PEOPLE, THIS WENT TO THE
TODAY SHOW, GOOD MORNING AMERICA. IT WAS NATIONAL CONVERSATION."
Monday's finish and other embarrassing calls by the replacement refs brought
a renewed sense of urgency to strike a deal.
This morning, NFL players welcomed the regular officials' return.
CJ Spiller of the Buffalo Bills tweeted: "Welcome back REFS glad y'
all was able to get a deal done but thanks to replacements refs 4 trying
their best."
Both sides got some of what they wanted. The refs will see a boost in pay
over the next several seasons and the NFL will now get to hire a bench of
officials it can use to replace underperforming refs.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Mid and high level cloudiness has been the dominant feature in our forecast the last couple of days, but as we ease into the weekend look for a bit more sunshine to return with each passing day.
Our Thursday will start off with a few clouds mixing in with our sunshine. Through the afternoon, a mix of sun and clouds will allow temperatures to rebound into the upper 80s to low 90s. We'll also be in more of a summertime pattern, where showers and a few storms favor the afternoon and evening hours. With an easterly flow in place, a scattering of downpours will remain close to the urban corridor.
Friday and into the weekend, expect a mix of sun and clouds, while most of the rain activity holds off until the afternoon. With a turn in our steering winds by Sunday off the Gulf of Mexico, a few mid morning showers can't be ruled out before they get pushed deeper inland by the afternoon.
Early next week, a cold front will stall across the Peninsula just to the north of the area. This will keep our weather pattern a bit unsettled as we kick off the month of October.
In the tropics, things are relatively quiet. The only storm brewing in the Atlantic Basin is Nadine as it remains 600 miles to the southwest of the Azores. Models are hinting at no tropical troubles at least for the next 5 to 7 days.

-- KOHL'S, MORE THAN 52,000, UP 10 PERCENT OVER 2011.
-- WALMART, 50,000.
-- AND TARGET, BETWEEN 80 AND 90,000, SLIGHTLY LOWER THAN LAST YEAR, THE RETAILER SAYS, BECAUSE THEY'VE HIRED MORE PERMANENT WORKERS.
HOLIDAY JOB SEEKERS SHOULD LOOK OUTSIDE THE BIG BOX TOO. FOR EXAMPLE, KOHL'S WILL ADD ANOTHER 5,700 POSITIONS AT ITS DISTRIBUTION CENTERS. AMAZON WILL BRING ON 5,000 SEASONAL WORKERS. THE MAJOR SHIPPING COMPANIES WILL ALSO HIRE EXTRA HANDS TO KEEP UP WITH THE HOLIDAY RUSH.

-- ARE THERE ANY TECHNIQUES TO TEACH YOUR CHILD PATIENCE?
-- GO THROUGH THE NEW TOOLS OUT THERE THAT CAN HELP PARENTS.
About one-in-five parents are not confident that they have the tools needed to prepare their children's social-emotional skills for entry into kindergarten.*
Research shows that social-emotional skills are the most important predictor of success in school, and that children deficient in these skills are at elevated risk for behavioral, social and academic problems in later childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
Social and emotional skills are the building blocks of success in school and in life. When children don't learn skills such as managing their feelings at an early age, their emotions can get in the way of thinking and learning. Teachers cite this kind of uncontrolled behavior as the most common reason for poor achievement in the classroom.
From simple activities and on-air programming to online games and mobile apps, there are many new tools available to reinforce the development of social and emotional skills.
Tip #1: When your child is disappointed about something, help him/her find something positive about the situation to focus on instead.
Tip #2: When your child gets angry, encourage him/her to take a deep breath and count to four.
Tip #3: Encourage your child to keep trying when he/she is struggling with a challenging task.
Tip #4: When your child is feeling apprehensive about a new experience - like going to the doctor or starting school - talk to him/her about what to expect beforehand.
Tip #5: Teach your child patience by coming up with activities to do while you're waiting, like singing a song or playing a quiet game.
