HELLO-1SHOT PUSH

GOOD MORNING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

TODAY IS SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 30TH.

I'M JOE ROETZ.

BEFORE WE GET TO OUR BIG STORIES OF THE DAY -

LETS CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINER WITH OUR STORMWARN 7 FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Over the last few days, the rain has been few and far between and today will be no exception.

The weekend overall has shaped up to be pretty nice as a summer like weather pattern stays in place. Mostly sunny skies will greet us as we wake on our Sunday morning with the possibility of some patchy fog, especially across our inland areas.

A few fair weather clouds will be mixing in with our sunshine during the afternoon. Even though the calendar says it's fall, our temperatures will feel anything but fall like, as most spots will aim for the lower 90s. Due to the west coast seabreeze, coastal and beach locations will remain just shy of that 90° mark.

With plenty of humidity around, isolated showers and storms will favor the afternoon and early evening hours. Rain prospects will hold around 20-30%, so not everyone will see the rain.

By sunset, the rain will come to an end and skies will become partly cloudy as temperatures drop into the mid 70s with a few inland spots in the lower 70s.

A weather system to our north and west will stall across the peninsula, while drawing up plenty of tropical moisture early in the week. This means more clouds and scattered rain with an unsettled pattern through the middle part of the week, with the rain getting a jumpstart during the morning hours.

Not much is happening in the tropics. Hurricane Nadine continues to hang on in the central Atlantic, while it remains no threat to any landmasses. Return to index of stories...

WHILE THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES ARE PREPARING FOR NEXT WEEK'S FIRST DEBATE, THE VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES ARE HONING IN ON THE BATTLEGROUND STATES.

PAUL RYAN TOOK TO THE IMPORTANT STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE -- BEFORE MOVING ON TO THE EVEN MORE CRITICAL OHIO.

You're either part of the problem or part of the solution. And you know what, President Obama has become part of the problem and Mitt Romney is the solution.

AND JOE BIDEN TALKED ABOUT HIS OPPONENTS' POSITIONS ON THE NATIONAL DEBT AND THE MIDDLE CLASS -- DURING A TWO-DAY TRIP TO THE BATTLEGROUND STATE OF FLORIDA.

I love how they bleed over the national debt debt they are so concerned about it.

What's even more amazing watching their convention is they discovered middle class. It's like my God there's a middle class.

THIS WEEK'S ADDRESSES FROM PRESIDENT OBAMA AND THE G-O-P LOOKED TO JOBS AND THE HOUSING MARKET.

I agree with Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan that we need to stop all the looming tax hikes and develop a pro-growth tax code that brings jobs home and keeps jobs here.

Last week, mortgage rates were at historic lows. But instead of helping more and more hardworking families take advantage of those rates, Congress was away on break. Instead of worrying about you, they'd already gone home to worry about their campaigns.

"THE WORST DROUGHT IN DECADES MEANS HIGHER COSTS FOR ANIMAL FEED AND LOWER PROFITS FOR FARMERS. FARMS LIKE THIS ONE HERE IN MARYLAND HAVE ALREADY HAD TO RAISE PRICES TO KEEP UP. "

"What you doing, honey?"

JULIE GRAY STINAR RUNS A SMALL FARM NEAR THE WEST VIRGINIA BORDER.

WHERE SHE RAISES HENS, HOGS AND CATTLE.

A THIRD OF HER COSTS GOES TO ANIMAL FEED -- WHICH IS MOSTLY CORN AND SOY.

PRICES FOR CHICKEN AND PIG FEED HAVE SKY-ROCKETED SINCE JULY.

Stinar: It was $14.77 on July 2nd. Now it's $16.79 so it's gone up by two dollars in two months.

Athena: That's fair-- a significant amount.

Stinar: And so then here we have the pig pellet was 12.22 and now the pig pellet is 15.06.

Athena: So it's gonna get worse?

Stinar: Oh it'll get a lot worse.

SHE'S NOW CHARGING A DOLLAR A POUND MORE FOR HER SAUSAGE, PORK CHOPS AND BACON AND PLANS TO SWITCH FROM CORN-BASED HOG FEED TO SORGHUM TO SAVE MONEY.

"It's requiring a lot more creativity. You have to be really good at adapting."

SINCE SHE DOESN'T RAISE BROILER CHICKENS -- THE KIND YOU EAT -- IN WINTER, STINAR IS HOPING TO AVOID THE WORST OF THE PRICE SPIKE FOR THEIR FEED.

AND UNLIKE MOST AMERICAN FARMERS, SHE GRASS FEEDS HER CATTLE -- MEANING SHE WON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT GRAIN PRICES FOR THEM.

BACK IN WASHINGTON, STACHOWSKI'S CUSTOMERS ARE PREPARING THEMSELVES.

"The quality is worth it. I don't mind spending the money."

"There is a limit to what any person would pay."

ONE TONGUE-IN-CHEEK SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM.

"Eat more tofu."

THEN AGAIN - TOFU IS MADE OF SOY.

MAIN WEATHER-WXWALL

"It's just so overwhelming!"

BUT THIS SOPHOMORE'S JOURNEY TO STARDOM WAS NO FAIRYTALE. WHEN HER PEERS PICKED HER FOR THE HOMECOMING COURT AS A JOKE-SHE HAD THOUGHTS OF SUICIDE.

"I'm like wow I feel like trash. I feel like im a little thing that no one really cares about."

AT HER SISTER'S URGING, SHE DECIDED TO KEEP HER TITLE ON THE COURT.

Reporter: If I were in your position, that would be really hard to do.

It's really hard to do right now, bc at first I thought about dropping out of the homecoming court. but I thought about it overnight and I'm like wait a minute I'm just gonna prove myself."

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT SHE DID.

Since then, she's been swamped with support.

"It's so cool to see emails we're getting or she's getting from parents and other students from all over the place telling their stories and how it helped them and it touched them and my daughter is out there as an inspiration to a lot of people and it's a really cool thing."

"I thought before 'oh no one cares about me.' I thought not even my own brother and sister care but they're proving me they do care. The world is proving they do, well not really care about me, but they care about the situation."

"FOLKS FROM ALL OVER THE STATE ARE HERE TONIGHT, INCLUDING THIS GROUP OF GIRLS-AND YOU GUYS LEFT YOUR HOME FOOTBALL GAME TO COME HERE AND SUPPORT WHITNEY. WHY?

"We just wanted to show whitney that our entire student body is completely and 100% behind her."

FROM BEING BULLIED-TO THE BULLY PULPIT. SHE'S USING HER NEWFOUND FAME TO SEND A MESSAGE.

"The kids that are bullying you, do not let them bring you down. Stand up for what you believe in. And go with your heart and go with your gut. That's what I did and look at me now! I'm just as happy as can be!"
