GOOD MORNING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
TODAY IS SUNDAY OCTOBER 14TH.
I'M JOE ROETZ.
BEFORE WE GET TO ALL OF TODAY'S TOP STORIES-
LET'S GET RIGHT OVER TO METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINER WITH YOUR STORMWARN 7 FORECAST.
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
After several days of cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and plenty of sunshine, we'll start to notice some subtle changes in our weather across Southwest Florida.
Although temperatures won't start off as cool as the past few mornings, most of us will see numbers close to the 70° mark with a few locations east of I75 in the upper 60s. Sunny skies will kick off our Sunday and that will quickly warm us into the upper 80s to near 90° during the afternoon.
Winds will continue to be a bit on the breezy side with gusts close to 20mph. As the breeze takes more of an easterly turn, it will more than likely bring a few more clouds across our skies. As humidity levels increase, our short lived dry spell will come to an end as the chance for afternoon showers re-enters the forecast. Rain prospects will remain on the low side, with most staying dry, however any passing shower will be quick moving. Tonight, our skies will go fairly quiet and temperatures will bottom out in the lower 70s.
A mix of sun and clouds stays in the forecast for Monday with a scattering of some afternoon showers. Highs will run a couple of degrees of above average in the upper 80s to low 90s.
A weak front will approach the peninsula late Monday and into Tuesday ushering in a drier airmass across the area. Tuesday and Wednesday will feature more sunshine and lower humidity, which means a return to the 60s for mornings lows.
Another cold front looks to approach by Friday with the chance for a few showers and storms, with cooler conditions possible by next weekend.
In the tropics, the remnants of Patty continue to drift to the southwest. Tropical Storm Rafael is forecasted to strengthen into a category one hurricane as computer models steer this system far away from the U.S. Mainland.

GOOGLE; YAHOO; BING.
SEARCH ENGINES ARE A PART OF MODERN LIFE.
THE TOP RISING SEARCHES DURING THE VICE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE WERE: "BIDEN", "CONFLATING", "MALARKEY" AND "WHO IS WINNING THE DEBATE?"
IT'S A WINDOW INTO THE MINDS OF MILLIONS OF WEB USERS.
But search engines can also raise eyebrows. For instance, when you type "completely wrong" into a Google image search, you get a whole lot of pictures of Mitt Romney.
GOOGLE SAYS THE GALLERY OF PHOTOS WAS UNINTENTIONAL.
ITS ALGORITHMS SIMPLY PICKED UP ON NEWS COVERAGE OF ROMNEY'S OWN DESCRIPTION OF HIS "47 PERCENT" REMARKS.
WE SAW A SIMILAR TREND ON BING AND YAHOO -- BUT TO A LESSER DEGREE.
For a search engine. they really rely on the words that are around an image to understand what it's about. If you put a picture of Mitt Romney beside words that say "completely wrong" then they say, I guess this is relevant for "completely wrong."
STILL, SOMETIMES IT'S INTENTIONAL.
THESE ARE CALLED "GOOGLE BOMBS".
IN THE MID-2000s, PRANKSTERS CREATED LINKS THAT CAUSED A GOOGLE SEARCH FOR THE WORDS "MISERABLE FAILURE" TO PUT PRESIDENT GEORGE W BUSH AT THE TOP OF THE RESULTS PAGE.
GOOGLE LATER TWEAKED ITS ANALYTICS TO LIMIT THE PRACTICE.
INTENTIONAL OR NOT, A SEARCH FOR THE PHRASE "DEBATE FAIL" BRINGS UP IMAGES OF PRESIDENT OBAMA; BUT ALSO OF PEOPLE LIKE ROMNEY, GOVERNOR RICK PERRY AND ONE-TIME PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL JOHN KERRY.
AND SPEAKING OF KERRY, WHO WAS ACCUSED OF FLIP FLOPPING ON ISSUES, CONSERVATIVE BLOGGERS MANAGED TO PUSH HIS CAMPAIGN WEBSITE TO THE TOP OF GOOGLE SEARCHES FOR THE WORD "WAFFLES".
Is this just a modern reality and candidates are powerless to stop it?
One of the best things they can do to protect themselves is to make sure they have multiple websites that are about themselves officially.
THE GOOD NEWS: SEARCH RESULTS USUALLY FADE OVER TIME.
ATHENA JONES, CNN, WASHINGTON.

Mainland.

YOU MIGHT HAVE NOTICED THE PRICE OF RAZER BLADES IS GOING UP.
IT'S EASY FOR THE AVERAGE AMERICAN TO SPEND 500 DOLLARS A YEAR ON SHAVING SUPPLIES.
JEFFREY DEMARS FOUND OUT WHY IT'S SO EXPENSIVE AND HOW TO SAVE SOME MONEY.
Return to index of stories...
"It is true that there are some expensive materials in razor blades like titanium and 440 c steel."
PROFESSOR EMERITUS FRED ZIMMERMAN STUDIED MANUFACTURING FOR YEARS.
HE SAYS ALTHOUGH, MATERIALS LIKE TITANIUM CAN COST UP TO 20 DOLLARS A POUND, THE GREATER REASON RAZOR BLADES ARE SO EXPENSIVE IS A LACK OF COMPETITION.
"Now Proctor and Gamble owns Gillette, there's really only a couple of companies that produce razor blades."
HE SAYS IT ESSENTIALLY ALLOWS MANUFACTURERS TO NAME THEIR PRICE.
"This is my grandpas, it's his straight edge."
IT USED TO BE YOU COULD BUY A STRAIGHT EDGE… STRAIGHT UP.
"With a belt you'd shimmy it like so."
…SHARPEN IT EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE AND YOU'D BE SET.
BUT EVEN, THE CLOSE SHAVE AT FLOYD'S BARBERSHOP IS NOW DONE FOR SAFETY REASONS WITH A DISPOSABLE BLADE.
"And after a while it started adding up so I had to switch over to a cheaper razor where Floyd's provides the blades."
SHE'S NOT THE ONLY ONE TO FIND A CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE.
"The big. the bag… with all of the little blue razors in them."
ERIC JOHNSRUD SAYS ITS ABOUT 10 BUCKS FOR THE BAG AND IT LASTS HIM A MONTH.
RAZOR BLADES HAVE BECOME SO EXPENSIVE A YOUTUBE VIDEO FOR A CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE HAS GONE VIRAL.
MIKE DUBIN'S COMMERCIAL HAS MORE THAN 6 MILLION HITS.
THE PREMISE IS SIMPLE.
YOU PAY A MONTHLY FEE AND YOU RECEIVE A MONTH'S WORTH OF RAZOR BLADES.
DUBIN SAYS IT'S A HIGH QUALITY RAZOR, THEY JUST CUT OUT THE MIDDLE MAN AND MARKETING TO KEEP COSTS LOWER.
"It's razor vs laser."
THERE ARE SOME WHO JUST DON'T EVEN DEAL WITH IT ANYMORE.
"A beam of light is going after the root of the hair."
LASER HAIR REMOVAL MAY BE MORE COMMON WITH WOMEN AND THEIR LEGS, BUT IT'S NOT ENTIRELY UNCOMMON FOR MEN AND THEIR FACES.
CHRIS CAIRL SAYS THE PROCEDURE TAKES SEVERAL TREATMENTS AND WOULD COST ABOUT 3000 DOLLARS FOR A FACE. ROUGHLY SIX YEARS WORTH OF BLADES.
BUT YOU WOULD NEVER HAVE TO SHAVE AGAIN, WHICH THEN AGAIN COULD BE A DOWNSIDE.
"Say you wanted to have a goatee later or something you would be making a permanent decision to let that go… or mustache."
GOATEE, MUSTACHE. GROW A BEARD. THAT'S ANOTHER WAY TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR MONEY.
CARLETON COLLEGE STUDENT COREY FAUVER DIDN'T SHAVE FOR A YEAR.
NEARLY A MILLION PEOPLE HAVE NOW WATCHED HIS BEARD GROW ON YOUTUBE.

Mainland.
