PERIODS OF RAIN THIS WEEK
Our local weather is in a bit of a struggle. Does it transition into the dry season or stay in the rainy season? You can tell we're in the grey area because we'll have two days of nice weather and then two days of gloomy weather.
That type of pattern is very common for this time of the year.
Will we see more of the same this week? Yes, yes we will.
Dry air at all levels of the atmosphere will begin filtering in from the Deep South tonight. This will absolutely squash our rain chances for Tuesday. We'll have a lot of sunshine and comfortable air thanks to low humidity levels. Overall, it'll be a great day!
Of course that is short lived. A surge of energy currently sitting over Texas will move over on Wednesday. That's when we see mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers for another afternoon. Guess what? That, too, is short lived.
I think you get the idea here. Periods of rain, periods of dry weather this week.
Dry air returns to Southwest Florida after the passage of a weak cold front. This means we will end the work week on a really nice note. As for your weekend, it'll be a split decision. Isolated showers are at play for Saturday, and then sunshine steps up to the plate on Sunday.
Temperatures will remain at the 70 degree mark during the overnight hours, and by the afternoon we'll be in the upper 80s.
We still have tropical weather to talk about. Tropical Storm Rafael is still going strong. Max winds are at 70 MPH, so it's knocking on the door hurricane strength. I expect it to become hurricane within the next 24 hours. It will not effect Florida or the U.S. at all. It's moving to the north at a slow 7 MPH.
During the last month of hurricane season our eyes focus on the southern Gulf of Mexico and the entire Caribbean Sea. It's been quiet so far, but we're expecting a slight uptick in activity within the next few weeks. So, don't let your guard down. Hurricane season isn't quite over!

IT'S A FLORIDA DELICACY MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR.
TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY FOR STONE CRAB CLAW HARVESTING.
ABC7'S KELLY CRESWELL WAS IN SAINT JAMES CITY TODAY AS FISHERMEN READIED FOR THEIR FIRST CATCH OF THE SEASON.
Return to index of stories...
They hope this season will be better than last. They've put out hundreds of these traps and they are getting these pots ready to cook them, cool them, and then they will be ready be ready for sale.
Fisherman dropped hundreds of crab traps all last week, in anticipation of the first day of harvesting. The fisherman at Kibbe brothers are hoping to yield a good catch. Last year, lee county commercial fisherman caught just under 189,000 pounds of stone crab claws--that's almost half of what was caught in 2010, which was just under 270,000 pounds. what might affect the beginning of the season this year is the red tide looming in the gulf. With more dead fish in the water, the crabs see that as an easy meal instead of going after the bait in the traps. But the waterfront restaurant owner is staying optimistic, saying that he hopes to have stone crab claws on dinner plates tonight.
Take sound
J.D. Hollway, the Waterfront Owner
"they're only available in Florida so everybody waits around for them. There's a lot if crabbers on the island do there's a lot of hype about it and everyone gets excited. They're building traps, setting traps and pulling traps. It's a lot of fun."
Cont vo
the owner says he could easily go through 100 pounds of claws this weekend.
Take live
Generally there is a high demand For stone crab claws at the beginning of the season. This early, It's hard to tell what kind of a season it will be. The crabs like cooler waters, that's what keeps them moving, So the best catches might not come until later in the season. It lasts until may 15th. in st James city kelly creswell abc7.

Return to index of stories...
Police said a woman was injured when she crashed her car
into an Orlando business early Saturday morning.
The incident happened just before 3:00 a.m. at Brothers Scrap Metals on S.
Orange Blossom Trail near South Street, police said.
When fire rescue crews arrived on scene, they discovered a car had crashed
through the wall of the business and into the building.
The business' surveillance cameras captured the crash. In the video, a
bright flash can be seen right as the car comes barreling through the wall,
moments later the driver climbs out of her car.
Michael Leigh, the owner of the business, told WFTV this is not the first
time a car has crashed into his building. Eyewitness News was there in May
of 2009 when another car slammed into Leigh's business after a brief police
chase.
Leigh said Brothers Scrap Metal will remain open for business despite the
mess caused by the crash.
Officials said the driver was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center to be
treated for non-life threatening injuries. Officials have not said if the
driver will face any charges.

PET HARNESSES…SEATBELTS FOR DOGS…DESIGNED TO KEEP OUR BEST FRIENDS SAFE WHILE WE CHAUFFEUR THEM AROUND.
Nats
THERE ARE DOZENS OF DOG SAFETY PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET. LAWMAKERS IN NEW JERSEY ARE EVEN CONSIDERING A BILL TO REQUIRE A CAR RESTRAINT FOR ROVER.
Grace Spencer/NJ State Assembly 011003
People tend to treat their animals like members of the family, why don't we treat them like that when they're in the car?
WHILE HARNESSES MAY GIVE PET OWNERS PIECE OF MIND…A NEW STUDY SUGGESTS THEY MAY NOT OFFER MUCH ACTUAL PROTECTION.
Lindsey Wolko 15;06;07
It was just astounding what we saw.
LINDSEY WOLKO FOUNDED THE CENTER FOR PET SAFETY IN 2011 AFTER GETTING INTO A CAR ACCIDENT WHILE TRAVELING WITH HER DOG. THE HARNESS FAILED AND MAGGIE SUFFERED SPINAL INJURIES.
SO WOLKO DECIDED TO TEST FOUR OF THE STRONGEST DOG HARNESSES ON THE MARKET…APPLYING THE SAME FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS FOR TESTING CHILD SEATS.
USING A 55 POUND WEIGHTED TEST DOG, WOLKO AND HER TEAM SIMULATED A 30 MILE PER HOUR COLLISION.
THE RESULTS? EVERY SINGLE HARNESS FAILED.
IN THE FIRST TEST, THE HARNESS HELD UP…BUT PROVIDED TOO MUCH SLACK. THE DUMMY DOG ROCKETED FORWARD, CRASHING INTO THE BACK OF THE TEST BENCH.
THE RESULTS WOULD GET FAR WORSE.
IN TWO OF THE TESTS, THE HARNESSES SNAPPED COMPLETELY, SENDING THE TEST DOG FLYING THROUGH THE AIR…TOTALLY UNPROTECTED…BECOMING A DANGEROUS PROJECTILE. IT'S ESTIMATED THAT IN A CRASH AT 30 MILES PER HOUR, A TINY TEN POUND DOG WILL EXERT THREE HUNDRED POUNDS OF PRESSURE.
AND IN THE FOURTH TEST…A DEVASTATING RESULT. THE HARNESS SLID UP TO THE TEST DOG'S NECK UPON IMPACT.
Lindsey Wolko 15;07;28
I don't think that there's any doubt that those dogs would have been seriously injured if not fatally injured.
WOLKO DOESN'T IDENTIFY THE MANUFACTURERS IN THE TESTS BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT DOING ANYTHING WRONG. THERE ARE NOT EXISTING SAFETY STANDARDS IN PLACE…SOMETHING THE CENTER FOR PET SAFETY IS WORKING TO CHANGE…SO THAT ROADTRIPS ARE SAFER FOR ALL PASSENGERS…INCLUDING THE FOUR LEGGED ONES.

THE AMERICAN PET PRODUCTS ASSOCIATION REPRESENTS HARNESS MANUFACTURERS. AND IN RESPONSE TO WOLKO'S FINDINGS, RELEASED A STATEMENT SAYING: "
. THERE ARE AN INCREASING NUMBER OF REPORTED ACCIDENTS WHERE A PET DISTRACTING THE DRIVER IS BEING CITED AS THE CAUSE.
A PET RESTRAINT THAT MERELY LIMITS A PETS ACCESS AND DISTRACTION TO THE DRIVER AND LIMITS ITS MOTION IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT IS STILL AN IMPROVEMENT OVER NO RESTRAINT.
