WITH 18 DAYS LEFT TO CAST YOUR VOTE.

PRESIDENT OBAMA AND MITT ROMNEY -- ARE RETURNING TO THE HARD HITTING, CLOSE CAMPAIGN AFTER A BRIEF TRUCE.

IN A RARE MOMENT, THE CANDIDATES MOSTLY SET ASIDE THEIR DIFFERENCES.

INSTEAD, THEY POKED FUN AT THEMSELVES AND EACH OTHER LAST NIGHT.

ABC'S TAHMAN BRADLEY REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

YOUR VOICE YOUR VOTE-PKG

The presidential contenders took a break from campaigning for a night of

comedy.

Appearing together at the annual Al Smith dinner in New York, President

Obama and Mitt Romney competed for laughs.

SOT Obama

"THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS AT ITS LOWEST LEVEL SINCE I TOOK OFFICE. I DON'T

HAVE A JOKE HERE. I JUST THOUGHT IT WOULD BE USEFUL TO REMIND EVERYBODY."

SOT Romney

"IT'S NICE TO RELAX AND FINALLY WEAR WHAT ANN AND I WEAR AROUND THE HOUSE."

The white tie and tails event is a Catholic fundraiser and a tradition on

the campaign trail for the past 67 years.

There's no partisan rhetoric allowed, just self-deprecating standup and

light jabs.

SOT Obama

"AS SOME OF YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED, I HAD A LOT MORE ENERGY IN OUR SECOND

DEBATE. I FELT REALLY RESTED AFTER THE NICE LONG NAP I HAD IN THE FIRST

DEBATE."

SOT Romney

"PRESIDENT OBAMA AND I ARE EACH VERY LUCKY TO HAVE ONE PERSON WHO IS ALWAYS

IN OUR CORNER, SOMEONE THAT WE CAN LEAN ON, / I HAVE MY BEAUTIFUL WIFE ANN

AND HE HAS BILL CLINTON."

Also while in New York, President Obama stopped by "The Daily Show with Jon

Stewart" where things took a serious turn discussing the terrorist attack on

the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

SOT Obama

"WE WEREN'T CONFUSED ABOUT THE FACT THAT FOUR AMERICANS HAD BEEN KILLED. I

WASN'T CONFUSED ABOUT THE FACT THAT WE NEEDED TO RAMP UP DIPLOMATIC SECURITY

AROUND THE WORLD RIGHT AFTER IT HAPPENED."

It's back to the business today for the candidates: President Obama heads to

Virginia, while Mitt Romney campaigns in Florida.

The latest Gallup poll -- capturing just one day of post-debate sentiment --

has Mitt Romney in the lead by seven points, 52- to 45-percent. But polls

show a much tighter race in the battleground states that will decide the

election.

FORECAST-WXWALL

There's a cold front pushing into north Florida, and it's forcing a lot moisture into the state out ahead of it. You noticed it yesterday in the way of clouds, humidity, and the stray downpours.

Friday will be very similar. We'll have coastal showers passing through as you head out the door, and those will be progessing east of I-75 as we push into the lunch time hour.

Make sure the kids can find a way to stay dry as they head to school!

This afternoon - expect a few stray showers to be hanging around, too.

Tonight the cold front will be fading away, and that's good news for us!

Why?

Some dry nice air is coming in behind it. I mean. Really. Nice. Air. The humidity will be low, and we're going to see overnight temperatures drop to the lower 60s by Sunday!

With the drier air in place we'll see partly sunny skies for Saturday with a slight chance of a late day shower. Sunday, we really see the effects. The skies will be sunny, the humidity low, and not a drop of rain.

That will continue until midweek. Around the Wednesday to Thursday time frame we'll see our winds start coming from the east. That'll replace our dry air with the muggy uncomfortable air.

Highs will be in the mid 80s, and lows will tumble into the lower 60s after Saturday.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

STOLEN SUV SEATS-PKG

SCRIPT:

The owner of this SUV parked it in his Dallas driveway, made sure nothing

valuable was inside and locked it up.

So just what draws the attention of the crooks in that red car-- enough to

make them reverse and come back??

It turns out the three thieves are after--of all things---the 3rd row of

seats!

Watch as one of the trio breaks into the back--the two others dive in.

Within seconds, part of the seats are out. and in just 40 seconds, the

entire back row is gone!

Police say so-called "third seat theft" is on the rise---especially in Texas

and California.

Ivan Barahona/Theft Victim

"It feels really bad because people work really hard for what they have."

Replacement seats are in demand by SUV owners with damaged or worn out ones.

Detectives say the crooks can get about a thousand dollars for the seats--

on sites like craigslist or in a salvage yard. not bad for 40 seconds' work

!

Police often recover the stolen seats but have no way of reuniting them with

their rightful owner.

nat of engraving

which is why Los Angeles police are encouraging owners to engrave their SUV'

s VIN number onto the bottom of those seats.

Det. Mike Ventura/LAPD

"It's something that's very simple--with a little bit of time and effort

people can protect themselves."

Even something as inexpensive as a bike lock will slow crooks down. A good

investment--because replacing a stolen 3rd seat at the dealership can cost

up to four thousand dollars. For GMA, Ryan Owens, ABC News, Dallas Return to index of stories...

AL SMITH DINNER-PKG

SCRIPT:

THE CHARITY EVENT HOSTED BY THE CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW YORK GIVES THE CANDIDATES A CHANCE TO HAVE SOME FUN AND GET A FEW LAUGHS. THEY TOOK TURNS POKING FUN AT THEMSELVES.

A campaign can require a lot of wardrobe changes. Blue jeans in the morning perhaps, suit for a lunch fund-raiser, sport coat for dinner but it is nice to finally relax and to wear what ann and i wear around the house.

This is the third time Gov Romney and I have met recently. Lot more energy in second debate, nice long nap in the first debate. Although it turns out millions of Am's focused on second debate who didn't focus in on first, I happen to be one of them.

AND, THEY GAVE EACH OTHER A FEW GOOD HUMORED ZINGERS.

After my foreign trip in 2008, I was attacked as a celebrity because I was so popular with our allies overseas. I'm impressed with how well Gov Romney has avoided that problem.

Don't be surprised if the president mentions this evening the monthly jobs report where there was a slight improvement in the numbers. He knows how to seize the moment, this president. He already has a compelling new campaign slogan. You are better off now than you were four weeks ago.

ROMNEY JABBED AT THE MEDIA.

And i have already seen early reports from tonight's dinner. Headline, obama embraced by Catholics. Romney dines with rich people.

AND OBAMA TALKED ABOUT A CELEBRITY ENDORSEMENT.

Getting to that time when folks are making up their minds. Honey Boo Boo endorsed me. Big relief.

OVER THE YEARS, THE AL SMITH MEMORIAL FOUNDATION HAS RAISED MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR HEALTHCARE CAUSES.

FORECAST-WX WALL
