HELLO-1SHOT PUSH

GOOD MORNING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

TODAY IS SUNDAY -- OCTOBER 21ST.

I'M JOE ROETZ.

BEFORE WE GET TO ALL THE BIG STORIES OF THE DAY.

LET'S CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINER. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR PUSH

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The cold front that brought come clouds and a few stray showers on Saturday has moved through Southwest Florida. The tropical airmass we've been used to for the last several months has been replaced by a cooler and drier one, and this will bring pleasant conditions for our Sunday.

This morning looks to be the coolest morning we've seen since last April as most locations have dipped into the lower to middle 60s. The day will dawn bright and sunny with light winds across the area. Plenty of sunshine will dominate our skies through the afternoon hours as temperatures rebound into the middle 80s.

As high pressure builds to the north of us, winds will remain out of the northeast, which will pull in some dry air across the peninsula. This will keep our humidity values quite comfy during the day. Clear skies tonight will set the stage for another delightful evening as temperatures drop into the mid 60s by morning.

Our mainly dry weather pattern will persist through the first part of the week with mostly to partly sunny skies. Temperatures will gradually warm back into the upper 80s with lows in the 70s. More moisture will move back into the area by Wednesday with the chance for a few afternoon isolated showers.

In the tropics, we're keeping an eye on a tropical wave in the central Caribbean that has a high chance of development over the next day or two. As of right now, most computer models have drifting northward towards eastern Cuba and the Bahamas, however this is still something to watch over the next few days as it evolves. BRAD BELLINGAR WORKS ON A PAPER DUE NEXT WEEK.

"doing research for that and compiling a literature review"

THE DOCTORAL PHYSICAL THERAPY STUDENT ALREADY HAD ENOUGH ON HIS MIND WHEN I ASKED HIM IF HE KNEW ABOUT A WIDESPREAD SECURITY BREACH.

HE HADN'T.

"I'm going to have to check my credit history, make sure nobody's filed for any credit cards or new bank accounts. I've got a lot to do now. Thanks!"

"The security breach didn't happen here. In fact, it happened about 540 miles away from here at the campus of Northwest Florida State College. But that security breach put into jeopardy the personal information of about 200,000 students and former students all across the state of Florida."

THAT INCLUDES EVERY ELIGIBLE BRIGHT FUTURES SCHOLAR FOR THE ACADEMIC YEARS FROM 2005 TO 2007 --

ALL FLORIDA INSTITUTIONS GET THE SAME INFORMATION ABOUT THE STUDENTS -- INCLUDING NAMES, BIRTH DATES, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS.

"that's like the perfect set up for identity theft"

A BREACH AT ONE SCHOOL COMPROMISES THE PERSONAL INFORMATION OF EVERYONE - REGARDLESS OF WHERE THEY WENT TO SCHOOL.

"I've heard nothing of it until right now"

AUTOMOBILE CLAIMS CAUSED BY CONTACT WITH A DEER RISE DRAMATICALLY IN THE FALL AS WELL, THAT'S WHY ITS IMPORTANT TO HAVE A COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE.

"Comprehensive is what covers fire, theft, break in and also damage caused by animals such as deer."

TO CUT DOWN ON THE DAMAGE, DAVIS RECOMMENDS PUTTING A BRUSH GUARD ON YOUR VEHICLE.

"We've had some vehicles come in that had them on them and all you had to do was replace a brush guard

BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IS PROTECTING YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY. THAT'S WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS SLOW DOWN, BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS ESPECIALLY DURING DUSK AND DAWN.

"Don't hit the brakes. because so many people jerk in reaction miss the deer and end up in the ditch or hit a tree."

YOUR SAFETY IS IN YOUR HANDS, BECAUSE THE DEER AREN'T GOING ANYWHERE. Return to index of stories...

MAIN WEATHER-WXWALL

TEEN LUNG CANCER-OC

FOR MOST OF US. IT'S AN ANNUAL OCCURRENCE. THE DREADED COLD.

USUALLY IT MEANS A FEW DAYS OF SNEEZING, CONGESTION AND FATIGUE.

BUT FOR 14-YEAR-OLD DANIELLE GIBBS. THAT COLD WAS THE FIRST SIGN OF SOMETHING MUCH MORE SERIOUS.

DOREEN GENTZLER SHARES THE THE YOUNG GIRL'S STORY. Return to index of stories...

TEEN LUNG CANCER-PKG

"I would be in dance class and after we did the dance, I would just lay on the floor. But I thought I was just out of shape."

DANIELLE GIBBS WAS A BRIGHT STUDENT WITH A PASSION FOR DANCE.

SO WHEN SHE WAS STRUCK WITH A PRETTY BAD COLD, SHE POWERED THROUGH. DANCING EVERY STEP UNTIL NEAR EXHAUSTION.

"I was so tired, couldn't really breathe at all. I was always coughing really badly."

WHEN HER BREATHING DEVELOPED A WHEEZE, DOCTORS THOUGHT IT WAS ASTHMA. AND WHEN ASTHMA MEDICATIONS DIDN'T WORK, THEY LOOKED DEEPER. TURNS OUT SOMETHING WAS OBSTRUCTING HER ABILITY TO BREATHE.

"Danielle actually had a tumor on the inside of her airway and this tumor grew so that it was completely blocking the airway."

"I was about to cry. You know, when you hear about cancer, that's really bad."

HER TUMOR -- ABOUT THE SIZE OF A SMALL PLUM -- IS CALLED TYPICAL CARCINOID. USUALLY DOCTORS NEED TO REMOVE EITHER A BIG PART OR THE ENTIRE LUNG.

BUT THAT TYPE OF SURGERY CAN LEAVE PATIENTS WITH A BIG SCAR AND A LONG RECOVERY.

"She was a young ballerina and I think of dancers and no one wants an incision this big across their back."

SO HER SURGEON, DR. M. BLAIR MARSHALL, DECIDED TO TRY SOMETHING MORE COMPLEX BUT ALSO MORE BENEFICIAL FOR A YOUNG PATIENT LIKE GIBBS.

USING AN INTERPRETIVE VIDEO CAMERA, SHE WOULD GO THROUGH THE ARM PIT TO CUT OPEN THE AIRWAY, REMOVE THE SECTION WITH THE TUMOR AND THEN RE-ATTACH THE HEALTHY LUNG.

"She was out of the hospital very quick and was able to return to ballet soon after and that's one of the advantages of this type of approach, there's less cutting - incision wise- for the skin incision, less trauma to the muscles underneath, less pain."

"I am so thankful. Every time I come, I have to bring something to Dr. Marshall because she saved Danielle's life.

IT'S BEEN TWO YEARS SINCE GIBBS WAS DIAGNOSED. SHE SAYS SHE'S BACK TO BEING A TYPICAL TEENAGER -- AND MAKING LOTS OF TIME FOR DANCE. SHE PRACTICES FOR HOURS EACH DAY.

"I can pretty much do everything. I can run across the street and breathe fine and dance fine and do everything." Return to index of stories...

TEEN LUNG CANCER-OC

DOREEN GENTZLER REPORTING.

DANIELLE GIBBS STILL GETS SCREENED TO MAKE SURE THE TUMORS HAVEN'T COME BACK-

BUT DOCTORS SAY IT'S UNLIKELY THE CANCER WILL RETURN.

NOW, LUNG CANCER IS RARE IN CHILDREN AND THEY DON'T KNOW WHY SOME GET IT.

CLEARLY, DANIELLE WASN'T SMOKING.

BUT THEY ARE FINDING MORE CASES IN NON-SMOKERS. Return to index of stories...
