The accident happened at briarcliff and the new roadway--michael g rippe parkway. A witness tells me a driver was traveling across when a motorcyclist was heading northbound. To avoid getting hit, the witness says the motorcyclist put his bike down, but he suffered a head injury and was taken to the hospital. Some residents in the area came out to see what happened, and they say it was only a matter of time before something like this happened.

It really comes down to get taxpayers the most bang for their buck while keeping city vehicles moving.
Keep in mind that many of these vehicles are police cruisers and fire trucks. We rely on them to respond quickly and keep us safe.
The city's finance director believes she can do just that while getting the city the best price on fuel. Currently, the city pays around $3.05 per gallon using its current fuel vendor - evans energy partners. Bateman says that's a pretty good rate. But when you consider the fact that the city spends approximately $183-thousand dollars per month on fuel alone, city leaders are looking for any way to save.
-rana erbrick/cape councilwoman-01:40-"anytime we can expend taxpayer dollars more efficiently and still get the same outcome, that is what we need to do, that's our job."
There's no telling how much the city could save on fuel until they go out to bid with lee and collier counties. Bateman hopes its a lot.

Return to index of stories...
Your Monday morning starts with pleasantly cool weather in place. Through the day today, we'll see lots of sunshine. If you liked yesterday, you'll probably like the next few days.
With dry air in place, our temperatures easily cool down at night and heat up through the day.
Highs this afternoon will reach into the upper 80s. A breeze from the east-northeast will give some relief from the warm weather this afternoon.
We'll continue with mainly sunny, warm and breezy weather for the next few days. Overnight temperatures will stay comfortable in the 60s.
In the tropics, there is an area of low pressure that is likely to develop soon south of Jamaica. The National Hurricane Center is giving it an 80% chance for development in the next 48 hours.
An air force reconnaissance plane will investigate it this afternoon if necessary. This system is likely to bring heavy rain, and lots of it, to Jamaica, Hispaniola and eastern Cuba.
Flooding will be a concern, especially in the mountainous terrain of eastern Cuba.
Right now, models are in pretty good agreement that this system is likely to move toward the north and not be a threat to Southwest Florida. We'll be tracking it, though, and will keep you updated.

A 54-year-old man was critically injured by someone who set him on
fire with a Molotov cocktail as he sat outside a market in Long Beach,
police said.
The incident happened around 7 p.m. Friday at a store on Pacific Coast
Highway. The victim, who was not identified, was sitting on the ground
outside the market waiting for his elderly father shopping inside when he
was suddenly attacked.
"The suspect came up from an adjacent alleyway and threw a bottle of a
flammable liquid," said Sgt. Aaron Eaton of the Long Beach Police Department
. "It landed at the feet of the victim and it exploded."
Surveillance video shows a flash as the victim went up in flames and the
suspect runs away. A terrified mother ran to pull her child in a stroller
out of harm's way. The burning man ran out into the parking lot and a good
Samaritan used blankets and jackets to put out the fire.
The victim was medically sedated in critical, but stable condition at the
hospital. He suffered serious burns all over his body.
Police said they have no motive for the attack.
"We don't have any idea why this particular person was targeted," Eaton said
.
The suspect was described as a male Hispanic 25 to 30 years old, about 5-
foot-9 and around 180 pounds. He was wearing a light-colored short-sleeve
shirt with vertical stripes.
Police said they hope the public will be able to help them catch the suspect
.
"The suspect is callous," Eaton said. "Somebody who has that kind of hatred
in their mind and use that type of a weapon, this particular suspect we need
to get into custody as soon as possible."

IN YOUR ABC7 HEALTHY LIVING TONIGHT.
EACH PERSON BREATHES IN AND OUT ABOUT 14 TIMES A MINUTE.
THAT ADDS UP TO 21-THOUSAND BREATHS A DAY, TEN AND A HALF-MILLION BREATHS A YEAR.
EACH ONE SAYS A LOT ABOUT YOU, AND NOT JUST IF YOU NEED A MINT.
TONIGHT WE TELL YOU HOW YOUR BREATH COULD REVOLUTIONIZE DISEASE DIAGNOSIS.
Return to index of stories...
FAILING THIS BREATH TEST COULD MEAN JAIL. FAILING THIS ONE COULD MEAN CANCER.
DOCTORS AT CLEVELAND CLINIC ARE WORKING ON A BREATH TEST THAT CAN DETECT LIVER, KIDNEY, AND HEART DISEASE.
"The way I look at breath testing, it's the new frontier of medical testing."
THAT'S BECAUSE A LOT OF THINGS, GOOD OR BAD, MAKE THEIR WAY FROM YOUR TISSUES TO YOUR BLOOD, AND GO THROUGH YOUR LUNGS.
"Our breath works kind of like an exhaust system for the body. Depending on how the different body parts are working, the chemicals in the breath might be different."
HI-TECH SENSORS CAN DETECT DIFFERENCES UP TO A PART PER-BILLION IN A PERSON'S CHEMISTRY.
"That's how sensitive these devices are."
STUDIES SHOW THE BREATH TEST TO BE 80-PERCENT ACCURATE IN NOT ONLY DETECTING LUNG CANCER, BUT ALSO THE TYPE, THE STAGE, AND HOW AGGRESSIVE THE CANCER IS.
DOCTORS HOPE THE BREATH TEST WILL ONE DAY DETECT ALL TYPES OF CANCER.
"That's the holy grail of breath testing."
PROVING MEDICINE'S NEXT BIG THING COULD BE JUST A BREATH AWAY

Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Return to index of stories...
Strong high pressure over the Southeast US has kept our deep atmosphere dry and stable for the
second day in a row. A nice, dry evening lies ahead.followed by a clear and pleasant night.
Lows at sunrise will fall to the upper 60s with middle 60s for the deep inland cool spots.
A persistent E-NE flow around the surface high will start to move some low level Atlantic mois-
ture across the peninsula.and with time,we may have a few passing showers to track. Tomorrow looks
to be a partly sunny and dry day.but by Wednesday and Thursday, there may be sufficient
moisture for a stray afternoon shower. It will also be a bit breezy around here through midweek.
Sandy will be making her close approach to SW Florida Friday thru early Saturday. Forecast
ideas of the tropical cyclone morphing into more of a hybrid low implies an expansion of the
storm's wind field. And with such a large envelope of cyclonic turning, it's possible that the storm's
moisture field may expand as well. For us, it would be nothing more than a slight uptick in the
shower pattern.but something to watch for.
