It seems calm on the outside,
But inside crow, or the clinic for the rehabilitation of animals , veterinarians are busy dealing with the effects of red tide.
Sot Steve Greenstein, Crow Executive Director
We working on a about half a dozen right now, mostly commerands and we have a sanderling that was found here on sanibel. But mostly just commerands for now."
The birds- ate fish- killed by the toxic algae in the the water.
Causing a neurological affect
Sot Steve
" it puts them in what's called a down position, when you find them they'd v disorientated, they usually can't stand up, have trouble breathing, really it's a positioning of their system"
All these birds- found by citizens who called crow to rescue them.
All of them, with similar symptoms-
Sot Dr. Aundria West, crow
" when you walk up to them, they don't walk away, or if they are walking they really just look like a drunk sailor- they stagger, they have a lot of intention tremors with their heads and really just look like a drunk bird."
There's no cure for red tide poisoning,
So crow does what they can.
Sot dr aundria
" it's a toxin s there's not really much you'd an do as far as anti toxin against it, you just have to wait for the body to clear it out so the best way is to pump m full of fluids, get things flushed out and just provide some food."
Within 24 hours- vets here know if the birds going to make it.
Once they seem strong enough- they graduate to this outside enclosure.
This commerand could be released in 48 hours if he keeps recovering.
Making all the work- worth it.
Sot Steve
" at crow were here for one reason and that's release hats really our goal here from start to finish."

Hurricane Sandy will continue to influence our weather through the end of the week and into the upcoming weekend.
As of this afternoon, Sandy is approaching the southeastern coast of Jamaica packing winds of 80mph. As Sandy continues on a northerly track, it will bring flooding rains not only to Jamaica, but eastern Cuba, Haiti, and the
Bahamas. For us, Southwest Florida will stay on the drier side of Sandy, however you will notice an increase in the winds over the next couple of days as Sandy makes its closest approach.
For the remainder of our Wednesday, we'll continue to see a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures peaking in the middle to upper 80s. A couple of spotty showers can't be ruled out through the early evening hours, however the vast majority of Southwest Florida should stay fairly dry.
Tonight, partly cloudy skies will stick around with overnight lows settling into the lower 70s by morning.
As Sandy moves closer to the Bahamas, our breezy northeasterly wind will set up across the peninsula once again for Thursday keeping the chance for a few spotty showers in the forecast as moisture from the Atlantic gets pulled in our direction from the east. More clouds than sun tomorrow will also keep temperatures in the middle to upper 80s. Expect our windiest day to be on Friday as winds will increase out of the north and northwest to 25 mph gusting close to 40mph throughout the day.
As Sandy, begins to pull away from the Florida coastline, some dry air will be filtering in on the backside of this system, keeping a drier weather pattern in place through the weekend. Also, some cooler air will make its way into Southwest Florida, which may very well keep our highs in the 70s by Tuesday with overnight lows in the 50s for the first time this season.
