FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Over the last couple of days, our weather has been under the influence of Hurricane Sandy as we remained on the outer fringes of the storm.

Our biggest impact wasn't the rain, but the winds. Now that Hurricane Sandy is pulling away from the Florida coastline, more sunshine is in store for our Saturday, however the winds will stay a bit breezy with gusts close to 30mph.

The morning will start off with temperatures in the upper 60s to near 70° and with mostly to partly sunny skies, daytime highs will warm into the lower to middle 80s. Northwesterly winds on the backside of Sandy will continue to drag in some much drier air across the peninsula, which means we will start to notice a drop in our humidity by the afternoon hours.

Tonight, mostly clear skies will prevail and overnight lows will be a bit cooler as they drop into the middle and upper 60s.

By Sunday, the winds will begin to subside with the sunshine continuing to dominate our skies along with temperatures climbing into the lower 80s. Significant changes are coming by the first of the week as a cold front will push its way across Southwest Florida delivering a much cooler airmass to the area. We will finally get that dose of refreshing fall air with highs in the mid 70s and lows in the 50s by Tuesday morning with a few of our inland spots plummeting into the 40s for the first time this season. Dry high pressure will keep our weather pattern nice and dry through the upcoming week. Return to index of stories...

TROPICAL STORM SANDY COULD CAUSE A BILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF DAMAGE WITH DOWNED POWER LINES AND OTHER DESTRUCTION.

IT COULD EVEN AFFECT THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

THAT'S GOT FORECASTERS IN THE COUNTRY'S MAIN WEATHER-PREDICTION CENTER CONCERNED.

BRIAN TODD HAS THE DETAILS. Return to index of stories...

WORST CASE SCENARIO-PKG

A LATE-SEASON STORM THAT HAS THE EAST COAST BRACING.

ALREADY ALONG THE COAST THERE ARE PEOPLE FILLING SANDBAGS, BULLDOZERS PACKING BERMS.

WITH SANDY BEARING DOWN- THE NATION'S TOP FORECASTERS ARE RAMPING UP.

"We have it coming in up here."

LOUIS UCCELLINI IS DIRECTOR OF NOAA'S CENTERS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PREDICTION.

BRIAN-UCCELLINI: "What is the worst-case scenario for you?"

UCCELLINI: "Well we're very confident now that this storm, even if it tracks up towards the north and maybe even the northeast for a while, that this storm will start curving back towards the coast. / That's a bad situation for a landfalling storm for the bays along the coast- will have strong storm surges."

SURGES, RAIN, WIND-- EVEN THE FACT THAT IT WILL HIT DURING A FULL MOON, WHEN TIDES ARE AT THEIR PEAK- COMBINE TO MAKE THIS A STORM OF HISTORIC PROPORTIONS.

WE GOT ACCESS TO NOAA'S CENTER FOR WEATHER AND CLIMATE PREDICTION: A BRAND-NEW, STATE-OF-THE-ART TRACKING FACILITY.

Standup: "This is the country's main weather-prediction nerve center. From here experts track hurricanes once they make landfall, but also pretty much every major precipitation event inside the United States- not only how strong they are and where they're going, but how long they'll stick around. This model tracks Hurricane Sandy 4 or 5 days from when it hits land and look- it shows it's still lingering over the northeastern United States."

THERE COULD BE A-BILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF DAMAGE. WITH DOWNED POWER-LINES AND OTHER DESTRUCTION.

THE STORM COULD AFFECT THE ELECTION.

MARYLAND'S GOVERNOR SAYS HIS STATE'S EARLY VOTING, SCHEDULED TO START SATURDAY, COULD BE IMPACTED.

OFFICIALS' ADVICE FOR THOSE IN THIS STORM'S PATH:

PATRICK: "Make sure you have a flashlight, batteries, sufficient nonperishable food and water, a first aid kit, any necessary medications."

ALSO HAVE RADIOS, PHONE-CHARGERS, CASH READY, THEY SAY-- TRIM BRANCHES AND TREES AROUND YOUR HOUSE, CLEAR AUTUMN LEAVES FROM STORM-DRAINS.

UCCELLINI SAYS SANDY HAS SOME SIMILARITIES WITH THE PERFECT STORM OF 1991, WHERE A NOR'EASTER AND A HURRICANE COLLIDED AND PUMMELED NEW ENGLAND.

UCCELLINI: "We have a cold air mass coming in from the west.

BRIAN: "So it'll join with another storm.

UCCELLINI: "Which will join with another storm which will energize this system so we'll actually get an intensification of this system." Return to index of stories...

MAIN WEATHER-WX WALL

A LESSON IN HANDWRITING. NOT FOR CHILDREN. BUT FOR ADULTS.

MANY IN THIS CLASS TEACHERS, LEARNING CREATIVE TECHNIQUES TO TEACH THEIR STUDENTS HOW TO PRINT.

BECAUSE EVEN IN THIS AGE OF TECHNOLOGY, HANDWRITING REMAINS THE PRIMARY WAY STUDENTS COMMUNICATE IN THE CLASSROOM.

AND THE PRIMARY WAY THEY ARE ASSESSED IN HOW MUCH THEY KNOW.

"The sad thing is, sometimes kids don't have the ability to express what they really know from a level of education or intelligence because they're handicapped by poor writing or poor habits."

PRESENTER PATTI BUNCE SAYS THE EMPHASIS ON NOTE-TAKING IN GRADES K THROUGH 5 IS GREATER NOW THAN EVER.

EVEN IN HIGHER GRADES, STUDIES SHOW STUDENTS WHO TOOK NOTES BY HAND VERSUS THE COMPUTER WERE SHOWN TO HAVE BETTER COMPREHENSION AND SHE SAYS HANDWRITING IS A LIFE-LONG SKILL.

THINK ABOUT FILLING OUT JOB APPLICATIONS. TAKING STANDARDIZED TESTS.

"People are still judged by the quality of their writing. SAT and ACT scores. exact same answer, one is easy to read, one is sloppy. which one do you think gets a better score?"

"If you have writing that is small, choppy, illegible. the first thing that a person will think about you is that this person is unorganized, they are not focused, it's just a reflection of you."

TEACHER ROSE HARDWICK SAYS SHE HAND WRITES NOTES TO PARENTS, SHE DOES NOT EMAIL THEM.

"It doesn't say the same thing, it doesn't convey that personal communication."

AND BUNCE SAYS, THAT GOES FOR THANK YOU NOTES, EVEN FOR JOB INTERVIEWS. MAYBE YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT WRITING IT DOWN.

"You can e-mail them, but nothing says I'm really taking the time to pay attention to you, the situation, the promotion or the interview like a handwritten note. Nothing will ever replace that." Return to index of stories...

HIS NEXT MOVE HELPS BLAST YOUR BOOTY BACK INTO SHAPE!

YOU CAN EVEN DO THIS WITH YOUR NEWBORN! JUST HOLD 'EM WHILE WORKING OUT!

LAY ON THE GROUND FOR HIS NEXT MOVE -- THE SUPERWOMAN!!

"This will really strengthen the muscles of the lower back. You wanna bring up and down, your head is as one unit to your arms. And then we have an alternating. Opposite hand to opposite leg."
