FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Hurricane Sandy can't seem to make up its mind. One minute it's a tropical storm the next, it's a hurricane. Either way, Sandy has its eyes set on the mid Atlantic states with most of the forecast models honing in on New Jersey.

As Sandy continues to pull farther away from Florida, our pleasant weather pattern will stay in place for our Sunday. A few clouds will dominate the forecast today, especially across our coastal locations and even though the winds will slacken just a bit, it will still be on the breezy side as northwesterly winds gust to over 25mph.

Temperatures will start off in the middle to upper 60s this morning before warming into the lower 80s this afternoon. This combined with the northwest breeze and lower humidity, will make our afternoon quite comfortable.

A cold front will push its way across the peninsula late Sunday and into early Monday delivering some of the coolest air of the season to Southwest Florida. While we will see a good amount of sunshine, daytime highs will struggle to reach 80°, with many of us staying in the middle 70s. By Tuesday morning, temperatures will drop into the lower 50s across the urban corridor with our inland and northern cool spots plummeting into the 40s.

With dry high pressure remaining in control over the area, we'll get a break from the 80s as a quiet and much cooler work is ahead. Enjoy! Return to index of stories...

"Everywhere you look there is history, this is the first church in Lehigh Acres."

"An example of that history can be seen right behind me. That peace sign on the stained glass window? That dates back to the 1970's." George

IT'S THESE UNIQUE FEATURES, THAT MOTIVATE PASTOR DEB TO STAY HOPEFUL EVEN THOUGH TIMES ARE TOUGH AT FIRST COMMUNITY CONGREGATIONAL.

"We are still struggling, we are treading water."

BUT THINGS ARE LOOKING UP.

WHEN WE FIRST VISITED THE CHURCH 6 MONTHS AGO.MEMBERS HAD JUST VOTED TO *SELL THE BUILDING.

IT SEEMED THERE WAS NO SALVATION IN SIGHT.

"But God has blessed us, he truly has."

NOW THEY'VE DECIDED *NOT TO DO THAT.AND INSTEAD WILL FIGHT TO KEEP THE DOORS OPEN.

TODAY,

"I'm out of spaghetti here."

EVERYONE IS HUNGRY FOR MORE.

"Here's more meatballs."

CHURCH MEMBERS SAY PASTOR DEB'S NEW VISION FOR THE CHURCH HAS BROUGHT NEW LIFE INTO THIS HOUSE OF WORSHIP, THAT'S NOT ONLY KEEPING FOOD ON THEIR PLATE, BUT IN THE STOMACHS OF OTHERS.

"Things are looking a lot better than what they were and hopefully as each month goes by it gets better an better." Margaret Switzer

CHURCH ELDER, MARGARET SWITZER SAY THE PUMKIN PATCH IS HELPING THE CHURCH GET SOME NEW RECOGNITION, AND MONEY.

"People come along here, no connection to the church and it amazes me sometimes how much money they spend on pumpkins."

IF THAT'S NOT ENOUGH, PASTOR DEB SAYS SHE WILL ALWAYS REMAIN FAITHFUL TO WHAT THE CHURCH REPRESENTS.

"The church itself will not be closed no matter where we are we will go together."

NAPLES DAILY NEWMAKERS-SOT OC

Lytle: So church-sponsored schools are a part of this issue.

Towey: I think there will be a debate about whether there should be vouchers in schools, which the Supreme Court of the United States has said is constitutional. We also live in a democracy where the Legislature can make these decisions. Just throw them out if you don't like it.

Simon: Well the Florida Supreme Court has declared that public monies for church-run schools violates the Florida Constitution. There are two provisions on the Florida Constitution that are the basis for that, and Amendment 8 tries to repeal one of those. It reopens the door and leads the way.

OF COURSE YOU CAN CATCH ALL OF THAT -- AND MORE

MAIN WEATHER-WX WALL

SELF PARKING CAR-OC

PARALLEL PARKING CAN BE TRICKY.

ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE DEALING WITH TRAFFIC OR A TIGHT SPACE.

BUT WHAT IF THE CAR COULD PARALLEL PARK ITSELF?

LIZ CRENSHAW GOT BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A NEW CAR WITH THAT SELF PARKING TECHNOLOGY. Return to index of stories...

SELF PARKING CAR-PKG

SUPERS:

S/ RICHARD AYRES, FORD SPOKESPERSON:23-:29

"I'm a good parallel parker"

"Would you buy a car that could park itself?"

"I would."

"It kind of freaks me out a little bit that you don't have full control of the car."

A CAR THAT PARKS ITSELF. YOU'D EXPECT IT TO BE EXPENSIVE.

IT'S BEEN OFFERED AS AN OPTION ON SOME LUXURY CARS.

BUT TODAY THAT LUXURY HAS GONE MAINSTREAM. CAR MANUFACTURERS LIKE TOYOTA AND FORD NOW OFFER THE SELF-PARKING OPTION. AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE.

"Ford decided we have all the technology on the vehicle let's make this something that's available to all consumers."

RICHARD AYRES. A SPOKESPERSON FOR FORD PUT ME BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A 2013 FORD ESCAPE. FIRST, THE SYSTEM DETECTS AN AVAILABLE PARALLEL PARKING SPACE.

"hands off the wheel"

"take your hands off the steering wheel"

"right right"

"put the car in reverse"

"and now brake and gas only"

"i'm brake, i'm gas it's driving?"

"correct so you have to have faith here"

"alright"

"just let it do the hard work for you"

"oh my goodness"

"just a, hang on tight"

"whoa whoah"

"and the brake as you get close to the vehicle behind you, you do need to brake"

"ok"

"and now shift back to drive". "there you go and it will say pull forward slowly and wa-lah"

"i'm in. we're done"

"congratulations!"

ACTIVE PARK ASSIST USES ULTRASONIC-BASED SENSING SYSTEM. SENSORS ON THE FRONT AND REAR OF THE CAR. PLUS ELECTRIC POWER-ASSISTED STEERING. THE OPTION IS AVAILABLE IN SIX FORD VEHICLES.

RANGING FROM ABOUT 24-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR A FOCUS. TO ABOUT 32-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR THE ESCAPE WE DROVE. UP TO A LITTLE MORE THAN 43-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR THE EXPLORER.

PARKING HANDS FREE GETS PEOPLES ATTENTION.

"I couldn't believe it. the car just comes right in without touching the curb.

"I was quite impressed. I think I would benefit from such a mechanism like that too because I have trouble parking."

"I think that was awesome, I've never seen that in my life."

WE PARKED THE FORD ESCAPE ON A NEIGHBORHOOD STREET. IT MADE IT AROUND THIS WIDE TRUCK.

"Right there. that's when you need to stop and there you go."

"done, finished."

IT EVEN PARKS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE STREET.

"This is a really tight space."

"This is really tight."

"There now. it says you're finished."

"Wow nice job."

WE PARKED IT DOWNTOWN.

"We're using the brake. we've got no hands. and we're wow. In traffic, no hands, parked."

"It's amazing. there's always something new coming out every year."

"My next car because I'm horrible parking!" Return to index of stories...

AN ALARMING STUDY IS OUT ABOUT THE DANGERS OF SMOKING FOR WOMEN.

BRITISH SCIENTISTS REPORT THAT FEMALE SMOKERS CAN LIVE TEN MORE YEARS IF THEY KICK THE HABIT BEFORE THEY'RE MIDDLE-AGED.

ALSO, THE STUDY FOUND THAT SMOKING TRIPLED THEIR CHANCES OF DYING COMPARED WITH NON-SMOKERS.

Sarah Woolnough/ Cancer Research UK:16 "We also know that women started smoking later than men, and in some instances have been slower to give up than men. So we're only now seeing some of the late effects of women in large numbers having smoked a number of years ago."

AFTER A 7-POINT-7 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRIKES WESTERN CANADA.

A TSUNAMI WARNING IS NOW IN EFFECT THIS MORNING FOR HAWAII.

WAVES UP TO SEVEN FEET ARE EXPECTED TO HEAD TOWARD THE ISLANDS.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie says a tsunami warning that spurred coastal evacuations statewide is being downgraded to a tsunami advisory, ending the threat of serious damage.

Abercrombie said early Sunday that the Aloha State was lucky to avoid more severe surges after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Canada.

Abercrombie says beaches and harbors are still closed statewide.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service canceled tsunami advisories for Canada and Oregon, leaving northern California as the only spot in North America still under a tsunami advisory. Return to index of stories...
