PRESIDENT OBAMA AND G-O-P CANDIDATE MITT ROMNEY -- MAKE APPEARANCES IN 8 STATES STILL UP FOR GRABS.

ELLEN HOPKINS HAS OUR CAMPAIGN COVERAGE THIS MORNING. Return to index of stories...

YVYV FRIDAY-PKG

PRESIDENT OBAMA MADE HIS CASE TO VOTERS IN LAS VEGAS. HE ECHOED THE SLOGAN FROM HIS FIRST CAMPAIGN ABOUT BRINGING CHANGE TO AMERICA.

Right now, we could be putting more folks back to work right now fixing more roads bridges, expanding broadband to rural neighborhoods, making sure our schools are state of the art. Let's put American's back to work doing the work that needs to be done.

MITT ROMNEY HIT BACK ON THE PRESIDENT'S "CHANGE" THEME DURING A CAMPAIGN STOP IN ROANOKE, VIRGINIA.

There's no question in my view that we really can't have four more years like the last four years. The Obama folks are chanting four more years, four more years, but our chant is this five more days, five more days is our chant.

ROMNEY DELIVERS WHAT HIS CAMPAIGN SAYS IS HIS "CLOSING ARGUMENT" TODAY DURING A STOP IN WISCONSIN. THEN HE'S OFF TO OHIO FOR TWO RALLIES.

OBAMA WILL ALSO BE IN OHIO -- WHERE HE'LL HOLD THREE GRASSROOTS EVENTS BEFORE HEADING BACK TO THE WHITE HOUSE.

THE CANDIDATES AND THEIR RUNNING MATES WILL MOVE THROUGH THE EIGHT BATTLEGROUND STATES OVER THE FINAL FIVE DAYS IN A GAME OF CAMPAIGN CHESS. THEY ARE TRYING TO WIN OVER THE UNDECIDED VOTERS WHO COULD DECIDE THE RACE.

I'M MARY ELLEN HOPKINS REPORTING. Return to index of stories...

PKG SCRIPT:

Sandy may be gone, but frustration in parts of New York is growing.

MOS - Donna Solli, Staten Island

"We're gonna die. We're gonna freeze. We got 90 year old people."

In this Manhattan neighborhood, recovery continues at a slow pace. Residents

feel like they've been forgotten.

SOT Richard Del Rio, Church Pastor

"THERE'S A SENSE OF THAT THEY HAVE NO VALUE. THEY SEE THAT OTHER AREAS ARE

BEING TAKEN CARE OF AND THEY TOTALLY OVERLOOKED US."

Hundreds showed up for food from local churches and aid organizations.

MOS Stephanie Laureano, NYC Resident

"ALL THE FOOD WE HAD TO THROW OUT OF THE REFRIGERATOR. SO THIS IS VERY

NEEDED RIGHT NOW."

It was another night of darkness and cold for hard hit Staten Island.

Thousands still without power. Many homeless. Among them: Mike Abruzzo and

his family.

SOT Mike Abruzzo, Storm Victim

"MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER YESTERDAY, FAITH, SAID "DADDY, I WANT TO GO HOME." /

I TOLD HER IT'S GOING TO BE A WHILE. SHE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND. SHE

'S SIX. "

Search teams found the bodies of these two little boys who were torn from

their mother's arms when the storm hit Staten Island.

NATS - announcement

"NO MORE GAS GUYS"

Transportation is still a nightmare. Desperate drivers waited in lines miles

deep to get gas. And people waited in lines for blocks to catch the bus.

NATS

"WHERE ARE THE BUSES?!"

Driving wasn't much better. Check points were set up to force people to car

pool.

In New Jersey, door to door rescues by emergency crews and the National

Guard continue.

While natural gas fires burn in Mantoloking where homes were destroyed.

New York City will try to return to normal this weekend.

The mayor said the city's marathon will go on, but some people say it should

not because it will strain already limited resources.

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Southwest Florida weather at its finest"

A weak cold front brought some cloudy periods across our skies Thursday, and now that the clearing trend is well underway we're in store for a beautiful weekend. This front will not bring much of a chill, however it will keep our nights comfortably cool and our afternoons sunny and dry with low humidity.

Temperatures will start off in the low 60s this morning with a few middle and upper 50s deeper inland and across our northern communities. Patchy fog in some areas will give way to plentiful sunshine that will fill our skies through the afternoon and this will help temperatures warm into the upper 70s to lower 80s. We'll also see a nice refreshing breeze out of the northwest, which will keep the dry air in place and relative humidity levels on the comfy side.

Tonight, skies will stay clear and lows will be a touch cooler as many locations along the urban corridor will settle into the upper 50s by morning.

The weekend is shaping up beautifully with dry high pressure in control. This will keep the pleasant weather around through Sunday. Mostly sunny skies will prevail with our mornings near 60° and our afternoons in the lower 80s.

Another cold front is on the map and it's scheduled to move through Southwest Florida on Tuesday. This will bring a mix of sun and clouds to then area with more clouds than sun at times with the chance for isolated afternoon showers. In its wake, temperatures will return to the middle and upper 70s for highs and 50s for lows. Return to index of stories...

EVEN THE GIANTS OF RETAILING SAY SOME OF THEIR BIGGEST COMPETITION ISN'T ONLY THE STORE NEXT DOOR.

.BUT THE STORE ONLINE.

"Because they know people are going to be whipping out their smartphones and pulling up to see what is Amazon's price.what are the prices online"

SO, STORES LIKE TOYS R US AND TARGET HAVE DECIDED TO GET AGGRESSIVE.JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

"many of our online competitors that we have steered away from price matching in the past, we're going to this year"

PRICE-MATCHING. RE-INTRODUCING LAYAWAY. FREE SHIPPING TO YOUR HOME.

.ARE ALL STEPS PHYSICAL STORES ARE TAKING TO AVOID BEING SOMETHING OTHER THAN A SHOWROOM FOR THEIR DIGITAL RIVALS.

"Stores do not want to be Amazon showrooms this year. it's something that we're seeing repeatedly throughout the stores with a variety of different promotions"

"Brick and mortar retailers in particular.you know.they have rent they have to pay.they need to incentivize consumers to visit the stores"

TARGET, FOR EXAMPLE.IS UTILIZING Q-R CODES FOR EASY ACCESS TO ITS TOP TOYS. EVEN IF THE ITEM'S NOT IN STOCK.

"You can snap a picture of the code with your phone and then have that item shipped directly to you for free"

"I don't have to face that frustration taking 3 hours to go shopping and finding that the thing I want isn't on their shelf"

MORE SO THAN HOLIDAYS PAST, RETAIL EXPERTS EXPECT SOME BRICK AND MORTARS TO BE MORE DIGITAL THAN TRADITIONAL THIS YEAR. Return to index of stories...

A LOCAL INSURANCE COMPANY BELIEVES THE SURGE OF CLAIMS FROM HURRICANE SANDY IN THE NORTHEAST-

COULD CAUSE A DOMINO EFFECT IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

L-A INSURANCE AGENT TAMI BAKER -- SAYS HER CONCERN IS THAT ONCE ALL THE DAMAGE IS ASSESED FROM SANDY,

THE PAYOUTS FROM THE INSURANCE COMPANIES COULD CAUSE A SPIKE IN PROPERTY INSURANCE RATES IN FLORIDA. Return to index of stories...

17:17 ''In general we see most years a 10 to 14 percent increase in premiums but depending on how many billions of dollars are going to payout for Sandy it could be higher than that there's really no cap at this time."

BAKER SAYS IT'S A TRICKLE-DOWN EFFECT.

IF INSURANCE COMPANIES END UP HAVING TO PAY MORE FOR THEIR INSURANCE-

THAT COST WILL BE PASSED ALONG TO HOMEOWNERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

FORECAST-WX WALL

Dan Krause, Stars & Stripes newspaper

Krause: Previews US edition of Stars and Stripes for SW Fla. veterans to be inserted in the Daily News

Kathleen Van Bergen, Naples Philharmonic

Van Bergen: Her first anniversary: A look back and ahead CEO

Van Bergen: We can feel that changing energy. I think what's happening theatrically around town is terrific. And we've been, quite frankly, exploring a lot of focus groups and surveys this summer, and there's a little desire for some edge. So of course we'll take it casually, comfortably, nothing too pushy, but I think people really do want to explore some of the meaty social topics that are relevant today.--

Kathleen Van Bergen, the Naples Philharmonic CEO, looks back on her first year at the helm and looks ahead to new programs and community events.

Meanwhile, Dan Krause unveils plans for a Southwest Florida edition of Stars & Stripes - the U.S. military overseas newspaper - starting this month in the Daily News.

They are guests on this week's "Naples Daily NewsMakers with Jeff Lytle'' program Sunday morning at 10 on ABC7.

Van Bergen comments on a new, bold edge -- even some brief nudity by The Naples Players -- in some local shows:

Kathleen Van Bergen has lots more to say. She's on Naples Daily NewsMakers Sunday morning at 10 right here on abc7. Return to index of stories...
