THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
The weekend is finally here with lots to do around town and the weather couldn't be more perfect.
A cold front that passed to our south yesterday has opened the gates for a very dry airmass to settle in across the peninsula. With the dry air in place and light winds, sweater weather is in order early this morning as temperatures along the urban corridor will start in the middle to upper 50s with chillier readings across our inland communities.
High pressure across the gulf coast states will be the dominating feature in our forecast keeping our skies sunny and our weather pattern dry. With plenty of sun in store through the afternoon, our morning chill will quickly fade with daytime highs climbing into the lower 80s. Our coastal and beach locations will be a few points lower as a northwesterly breeze develops around 5-10mph.
Our evening will consist of clear skies and comfortable conditions as temperatures drop into the lower 70s by sunset. Overnight, lows will bottom out near 60° with 50s deeper inland.
We'll continue the trend of cool and comfy nights and warm afternoons as our atmosphere stays very stable with plentiful sunshine and rain prospects remaining next to zero.
The new work week will start off mainly dry with a few more clouds dotting our skies on Monday. By Tuesday we'll be tracking another cold front, which will bring the chance for a few scattered showers with a nice cool down to follow on Wednesday.

Return to index of stories...
WE'RE HERE WITH EXECUTIVE CHEF YVES SAMAKE WELCOME.
"We're going to do some fall cooking today and we're calling it fruits and roots. Where do we start?"
"Well the first roots I like to portray will be the parsnip soup and the parsnip right here. I think it's a mix between a green mango and a coconut."
SAMAKE SAYS PEEL THE PARSNIPS FIRST. THEN DICE.
SAUTÉ ONION. GARLIC. CELERY AND THYME.
"And then we're going to add the parsnips and then we're going to start blending."
"You know this smells like fall. Beautiful."
"What we'll do then garnish it with cinnamon croutons, again fall."
"Chef you've got something that you're calling beet carpaccio."
"Absolutely."
"Now he didn't say beef. he's talking beet. I have the golden beet, you have the red beet, what do we do?"
"We're basically going to add a little olive oil to it and kind of cook them with a little flavor inside already inside aluminum foil."
SPRINKLE CUMIN SEEDS AND KOSHER SALT. THEN ROAST.
"And then we're going to slice them in the mandolin."
"So you're doing a thin, thin slice?"
"Thin slice, yes. Then we can place them nicely."
ADD ARUGULA. AND HERE'S A TWIST. A SMALL SCOOP OF ORANGE SORBET.
YOU HAVE A NICE FALL APPETIZER.
NEXT UP. ROOT VEGETABLE TART TATIN.
"It will be an upside down tart."
"Upside down. what are we using?"
"Using carrots, turnips, rutabagas and parsnips. We're going to start peeling them. Peeling them, start dicing them. blanching them."
"So we have four different roots going in this?"
"Four different roots."
SAMAKE MAKES A SYRUP FOR THE TART. BUTTER. MAPLE SYRUP AND BROWN SUGAR. ALL MELTED AND MOLDED INTO A DISH.
TOPPED WITH THE MIXED ROOTS. AND PUFF PASTRY.
BUT THE FINISHED DISH IS UPSIDE DOWN. AND YOU HAVE A ROOT VEGETABLE TART TATIN.
HERE'S A FALL DISH. DUCK BREAST WITH ROASTED FRUITS AND ROOTS.
"I peeled and sliced the fruits and the roots and cooked them slightly in the oven
"This is going to be our little bed for our duck."
"Exactly and then we can display the duck right on top."
"It looks like it needs a little sauce. Oh wow, chef, this is fall on a plate!"
SOME LOCAL FALL FLAVOR. SEARED ROCK FISH ON A PUREE OF CELERY ROOT.
"I think it's the ugliest of root vegetables what are you going to do to this?"
"We're going to dice it up to put it to make the puree. That's the puree. I'm just gonna' dress it up, just a little design here. we'll add the fish. and we're just going to garnish it with a little citrus salad."

OUR PETS ARE GETTING BIGGER-
AND YOU MIGHT NOT EVEN KNOW WHEN THEIR OVERWEIGHT-
COMING UP-
TIPS TO KEEP THEM HAPPY AND HEALTHY.

MORE THAN HALF OF ALL CATS AND DOGS IN THE U-S ARE OVERWEIGHT.
IS YOUR PET ONE OF THEM?
IT MAY BE HARD TO TELL BECAUSE PET OBESITY IS SO COMMON.
NICOLE MISENCIK TALKED TO THE EXPERTS ABOUT HOW BIG OF A TOLL THOSE EXTRA POUNDS CAN HAVE.

MEET EIGHT YEAR OLD AGGIE.
"She is part of the family she's just a third kid with four legs."
SHE'S ALSO ONE OF MILLIONS OF OVERWEIGHT PETS IN AMERICA.
"She looked like an ottoman, she was a square."
MORE THAN HALF OF CATS AND DOGS ARE OVERWEIGHT.
TIPPING THE SCALE IN AN UNHEALTHY FAVOR.
AGGIE'S OWNER HOLLY NEWMAN HOPES TO TURN THAT AROUND.
"Nobody is used to seeing a thin labrador, nobody is used to seeing a thin golden retriever so that's become the new normal. Gaining weight for a pet just like in people can lead to increase in cardiac disease, increase in hip and joint problems, and it can decrease their life span by years at a time."
SO ONCE A MONTH AGGIE GETS CHECKED OUT AT BROAD RIPPLE'S ANIMAL CLINIC'S FIT FOR LIFE PROGRAM TO LEARN HER PROGRESS.
REGIMENTED DIET AND EXERCISE ARE HELPING HER SHED POUNDS. IT'S KEEPING HOLLY ON TRACK TOO.
"I knew Aggie was waiting on me to go for a walk so I put the kids to bed, got her leash on and we went for a mile and a half walk."
"It can become a family lifestyle to get out and walk every night, and we're all going to watch what we eat, we know we shouldn't feed the dog extra goodies so we're going to watch what we eat as well."
TOO MUCH LOVE. IN THE FORM OF TREATS AND TOO MUCH FOOD IS OFTEN THE CULPRIT.
"Making them happy makes us happy and sometimes that translates into just too many calories."
"One of the simple ways you can save calories is actually switching out dog treats for carrots. 6 month old gabby approves."
"Carrots are fantastic! Any kind of vegetable is great fruits are great except for grapes."
THERE ARE SIMPLE WAYS TO SEE IF YOUR PUP IS CARRYING AROUND TOO MANY POUNDS.
"We'd like to be able to feel her ribs. It's kind of hard to feel her ribs. there's a little padding in the way. She should be broader over the rib cage when viewed from above then have a little bit of a tuck or taper as it goes towards her back legs."
AGGIE HAS ABOUT 10 MORE POUNDS UNTIL SHE HITS HER GOAL WEIGHT. BUT SHE'S ALREADY ON THE PATH TO HEALTH.
"I can tell when we go for our walks now that she's able to keep up, where as before I would turn the corner to go the long route and she would put the brakes on."

NICOLE MISENCIK REPORTING-
SO, WHAT CAN YOU DO TO KEEP YOUR PET HEALTHY?
FIRST, WATCH HOW MUCH FOOD YOU GIVE THEM.
DON'T JUST FILL UP THEIR BOWL. MEASURE OUT THE FOOD TO THE RECOMMENDED PORTION SIZE.
A WALK AROUND THE BLOCK MAY BE ALL YOUR PUP CAN TAKE. BUT YOU CAN GRADUALLY ADD IN MORE EXERCISE UNTIL THEY ARE ACTIVE AND HEALTHY.
