THE FIRE IS HAPPENING NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF ALICO ROAD AND OLD US 41 IN LEE COUNTY.
ABC7'S KELLY CRESWELL TELLS US HOW ALL THE SMOKE FROM THE FIRE IS IMPACTING THE AIR AND RESIDENTS.
Return to index of stories...
Just driving down 41 to get here, we could immediately smell the smoke around island park road, even with the windows up and air conditioning on. Thats because smoke has been blowing from this recycling plant for a day and a half now. Take a look from our mast camera, crews are still working around the clock to put out the fire.
Take tracked vosot
A hazy morning glow rose over the piles of chopped up yard waste and vegetation at coastal grinding off of alico road. All day--crews from San Carlos fire and the Florida forest service pulled the burning piles apart and sprayed them over with water as clouds of smoke continued to blow through the area. FFS estimates it is working on an area 50 feet wide and 30 feet long and it will have crews busy for at least the next 48 hours making sure the fire is out. But that also means two more days of smoke filled air for allergy sufferers and people with respiratory problems. Doctor Larry Castillo of allergy and asthma says the piles of burning vegetation sends particles into the air, turning into a respiratory irritant that can cause sinus headaches, nasal congestion and coughing.
Take sound
Larry Castillo, M.D., Allery & Asthma Care Centre "It can irritate the lungs, it can irritate the sinuses and definitely if you have sinus trouble or asthma, COPD, you want to be careful."
It's recommended that you stay indoors if you show those symptoms. But we did speak with other folks today who weren't bothered by the smoke. We've talked with the FFS and San Carlos fire and it will be at least a few days before its out, and they are working on the smokiest part right now. in lee go kelly creswell abc7.

SUNSHINE RETURNING TO THE AREA
The skies were a bit bleak on Monday, and at times we even saw a passing shower.
Those same clouds will begin tapering off as we go into Tuesday, and that means our forecast will be singing a sweet melody about sunshine for this week.
There are two systems at play. They're currently giving us the depressive weather, and they must first move out before those sunny skies return. System number one is an area of high pressure positioned to our northeast. The winds flow clockwise around high pressures, so that helps pull Atlantic moisture into the region. System number two is a cold front stationed over north Florida, and it has a lot of moisture latched to it as well. The two are in-sync with one another. Thus, we had the clouds and light showers.
The cold front will track over the state of Florida Tuesday. In its wake - the dry, sunny skies!
In summary my forecast for Tuesday through Friday will have a medley of clouds and sun. No rainfall and daytime temperatures in the lower 80s. Mornings lows will remain in the 60s.
Saturday will be an interesting day.
A stronger, more robust cold front will enter the southeast. It has a great chance of elevating our rain chances for Saturday. The rest of the weekend will be dry, and the blue skies will dominate. Cooler weather will return, too, as mornings plummet to the 50s and afternoon highs struggle to get into the 70s!

Return to index of stories...
Many of those residents who live near by are worried the nine U-Haul trucks - which will be parked in this driveway behind the gas station- will turn into a neighborhood eyesore. But COUNCIL TOOK STEPS TO PREVENT THAT, FORCING the owner to build an 8-foot wall and install landscaping, shielding the trucks from the neighborhood.
The owner built this cement parking lot in 2004 with the intention of starting a truck rental business. But the northwest neighborhood association fought the proposal, worried the it would bring noise and pollution to the neighborhood. THE PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION VOTED AGAINST THE PROJECT, SO THE OWNER OF THE GAS STATION APPEALED THE DECISION TO COUNCIL WHO NARROWLY APPROVED THE PETITION WITH THE TWO SPECIAL CONDITIONS WHICH THE OWNER AGREED TO.
-joe mazurkiewicz/BJM Consulting, Inc.-04:07:12-"he's extremely happy. He made the capital investment to pave this area to support a U-Haul and now he can begin to experience revenue associated with that use."
-Ed Raab/Homeower-"if they would do it the way it was originally planned inside a building I would have to objections."
The owner hopes to have the U-Haul here ready to go with two months. That's if the NW neighborhood association doesn't appeal the council's decision. in cape coral alex boyer abc7.

SHELBY LIN REPORTS.
Return to index of stories...
NEW EVIDENCE OUT THIS WEEK FINDS CHILDREN WHOSE MOTHERS HAD THE FLU OR A FEVER LASTING MORE THAN A WEEK WHILE THEY WERE PREGNANT, MAY BE AT A HIGHER RISK OF DEVELOPING AUTISM.
THE LARGE DANISH STUDY LOOKED AT NEARLY 97-THOUSAND CHILDREN BORN BETWEEN 1997 AND 2003.
THEIR MOTHERS WERE SCREENED TO SEE IF THEY HAD ANY INFECTIONS, USED ANTIBIOTICS OR HAD LONG PERIODS OF FEVER DURING THEIR PREGNANCIES.
RESEARCHERS FOUND NO ASSOCIATION BETWEEN AUTISM AND MINOR INFECTIONS, SUCH AS RESPIRATORY AILMENTS, OR URINARY AND GENITAL INFECTIONS.
BUT WHEN IT CAME TO INFLUENZA DURING PREGNANCY, THE RISK OF BEING DIAGNOSED WITH AN AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER BEFORE THE AGE OF THREE WAS TWICE AS HIGH FOR THOSE CHILDREN, COMPARED TO TODDLERS WHOSE MOTHERS DID NOT HAVE THE FLU DURING THEIR PREGNANCIES.
AND IF THE MOTHERS HAD A FEVER LASTING MORE THAN A WEEK WHILE CARRYING A BABY, THAT CHILD HAD A THREE TIMES GREATER RISK OF DEVELOPING AUTISM THAN OTHER CHILDREN.
RESEARCHERS ALSO FOUND MOTHERS WHO TOOK ANTIBIOTICS DURING THEIR PREGNANCY HAD A SMALL RISK OF HAVING CHILDREN WITH AUTISM.
INVESTIGATORS SAY THERE MAY STATISTICAL SHORTCOMINGS IN THEIR DATA, AND MORE RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE DONE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE CONNECTION.

JEFF AND HEATHER MITCHELL'S KIDS LOVE TO PLAY AND AT 20 MONTHS, GRACE LIKE TO GET INTO THINGS. SO DOES HER THREE YEAR OLD BROTHER, JACKSON. SO THEY TRY TO KEEP DANGEROUS ITEMS OUT OF REACH.
JEFF IS A FIREFIGHTER-AND HIS BOSS, CAPTAIN NIM HARRIS IS THE SAFE KIDS COORDINATOR. HE TOOK US THROUGH MITCHELL'S HOME TO IDENTIFY POTENTIAL DANGERS.
FIRST WE GO TO THE KITCHEN. A HOT ZONE OF HAZARDS.
"Whatever's inside of that especially if it reaches a temperature of boiling and it spills on a child it's going to cause possibly first and second and degree burns."
UNDER THE SINK THEIR FIRE EXTINGUISHER IS IN THE BACK. IT SHOULD BE VISIBLE, AND ATTACHED UP ON THE KITCHEN WALL. THE MITCHELL'S DO GET A CHECK FOR CHILDPROOF LATCHES.
"There are a number of chemicals in there that are obviously dangerous for a child."
AND SOME CHEMICALS LIKE THIS BLUE GLASS CLEANER LOOK LIKE JUICE DRINKS TO KIDS.
TO MAKE SURE KIDS DON'T ESCAPE, A SECURITY ALARM ANNOUNCES OPEN DOORS.
THE FAMILY GETS A HIGH MARK FOR A WALL MOUNTED TV. TVS ON STANDS CAN EASILY FALL ON A CHILD.
A FIREPLACE HEARTH WITH A RAISED EDGE MIGHT CAUSE A CHILD TO TRIP INTO THE FIRE. KEEP KIDS THREE FEET AWAY!
TO PREVENT FURNITURE FROM TOPPLING, JEFF USES A WALL ANCHOR.
THE MITCHELL'S OLDEST SON HIT HIS HEAD ON A GLASS TABLE SO THEY MADE SOME CHANGES!
"We actually took him to Moses cone and had him looked at and ever since then, all of our furniture is round and padded. Ha, Ha!"
NEXT, CAPTAIN HARRIS FOUND A MAJOR STRANGULATION HAZARD-LOW HANGING WINDOW BLIND CORDS THAT SHOULD BE TUCKED UP HIGH.
WHEN HARRIS WAS A YOUNG BOY, HE ALMOST DIED FROM CORDS WRAPPED AROUND HIS NECK.
"My Dad fortunately found me within a matter of seconds, but at that point he went through the rooms and cut every cord off of blinds in the house."
AND IN AN INFANTS ROOM. TOO MANY TOYS IN THE CRIB AND EVEN A BUMPER CAN BLOCK A BABY'S AIR FLOW.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Return to index of stories...
