GOOD MORNING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
THANKS FOR WAKING UP WITH ABC-7 THIS MORNING.
TODAY IS SATURDAY DECEMBER FIRST.
I'M CLIFTON FRENCH.
BEFORE WE GET TO OUR BIG STORIES --
STORMWARN 7 METEOROLOGIST TYLER MAULDIN IS IN THE WEATER CENTER WITH A LOOK AT OUR FORECAST TO HELP YOU PLAN YOUR DAY.
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Sunny skies return to Southwest Florida this weekend after what ended up being quite the cloudy Friday.
We'll likely see some scattered patchy clouds build in during the afternoon, providing for a nice mix of sun and clouds, but cloud cover won't be nearly as extensive as yesterday.
With no cool fronts expected to approach this weekend, temperatures will continue to run a couple degrees above normal for this time of year. After starting things off with morning temperatures in the upper 50s, look for daytime highs to warm nicely into the low 80s.
A strong easterly will keep winds gusting up to 20-25 mph at times, so today will be another breezy one as well as Sunday.
Tonight's weather should be very pleasant. Our sky will stay clear and quiet, and temperatures will cool to near 60 degrees with a nice easterly breeze.
Sunday will almost be a repeat performance of today's weather. Our sky will become partly cloudy by the afternoon, and temperatures will warm into the low 80s. The breeze will continue to stay rather stiff with gusts reaching 20-25 mph.
As we head into next week, our forecast stays pretty consistent with no major cool fronts expected to pass through. This means temperatures will keep running slightly above average, and we'll enjoy a mix of sun and clouds each day.
Moisture will stay very limited, so rain chances through next week will generally be less than 20%. By the end of the week there's a chance enough moisture could build in to produce a few isolated showers, but shower prospects look slim at best.
Have a wonderful weekend!

A CAPE CORAL FAMILY IS WAKING UP INSIDE A MOTEL THIS MORNING --

ITS BEEN A TOUGH YEAR FOR LESA KALTKA -
SHE LOST HER JOB, HER HUSBAND AND NOW HER CAPE CORAL HOME.
"its just another thing to happen but we will get through it."
KALTKA WAS ACTUALLY FILLING OUT JOB APPLICATIONS WHEN THE FIRE BROKE OUT AROUND TWO THIS AFTERNOON.
"I flew over trying not to get pulled over at about 80"
WHEN FINALLY HOME ON NE 2ND AVE -- SHE WAS MET BY FIRE TRUCKS AND THE CHARRED REMAINS OF MANY OF HER THINGS.
"I was terrified."
TERRIFIED BECAUSE HER FOUR KIDS WERE HOME - BUT THANKFULLY PLAYING OUTSIDE.
THE INITIAL 911 CALL SAID THE CHILDREN WERE INSIDE OF THE HOME.
PROMPTING TWO POLICE OFFICERS TO TRY TO GET IN. BUT THE SMOKE WAS TOO MUCH.
THEY WERE TREATED FOR SMOKE INHALATION.
"its not about the stuff its about the stability of the kids and they have no where to go now."
FIRE INVESTIGATORS TELL US THE FIRE BROKE OUT IN THE GARAGE BECAUSE OF IMPROPER MAINTENANCE TO THE DRYER.
A MAJORITY OF THE KIDS CLOTHES WERE INSIDE.
"its all stuff that can be replaced my children are okay and thats the most important thing."
BUT ALSO OF IMPORTANCE WAS EVERYTHING INSIDE THE GARAGE -- CONTAINING ALL THE MEMORIES OF HER HUSBAND.
"all of my husbands clothes which may not seem like a big deal but it was for the kids it was something for them to hold on to him."
NOW THEY HAVE TO HOLD ON TO EACHOTHER -- AS THEY LOOK FOR A NEW HOME.
"just take it day by day and see what happens i have awesome and resilient kids and thats incredible."

STEVE PACE HAS BEEN PREPPING FOR THE END OF THE WORLD FOR YEARS.
"I foresee the potential for a disaster that is catastrophic."
CNN CAUGHT UP WITH HIM IN 2009 AS HE PREPARED WITH FOOD, WEAPONS, EVEN ANTI-RADIATION PILLS-- ALL FOR THIS YEAR 2012.
"I'm talking a collapse of civilization."
PACE IS AMONG THE DOOMSDAYERS WORRIED THAT DECEMBER 21ST 2012 WILL BE THE LAST. THAT'S THE DAY WHEN THE ANCIENT MAYAN CALENDAR IS SAID TO END.
"A calendar does not end."
BUT THAT TALK OF THE END OF THE WORLD -- SHEER NONSENSE, SAYS TOP SCIENTISTS.
IN THIS YOUTUBE VIDEO THAT NASA PUT OUT, EXPERTS EXPLAIN WHY IT'S JUST ANOTHER DAY. THEIR SCIENTISTS TAKE ALL OF THE RUMORS ONE BY ONE AND DEBUNK THEM.
AMONG THE THEORIES IS THAT A LARGE PLANET KNOWN AS NIBIRU WILL HAVE A CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH EARTH WREAKING ALL KINDS OF HAVOC.
"So this enormous planet is supposed to be coming towards Earth, but if it were we would have seen it long ago. And if it were invisible somehow we would have seen the effects of this planet on the neighboring planets."
Thousands of astronomers- expert and novice. see nothing of the sort.
Another theory is that the planets will somehow align, causing devastating tidal effects. Two problems there - There is no planetary alignment taking place. and even if it were only the moon and the sun could have effect on tides on the earth, says NASA.
Experts have also dismissed other theories like the shifting of the Earths magnetic poles or solar storms.
TO SOME IT MAY SOUND LIKE FANTASY BUT THERE ARE QUITE A FEW PEOPLE WHO ARE REALLY AFRAID.
MOSTLY BECAUSE FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS THE INTERNET HAS BEEN ABUZZ WITH TALK OF THE WORLD ENDING IN DECEMBER 21, 2012.
DAVID MORRISON, SENIOR SCIENTIST AT THE NASA ASTROBIOLOGY INSTITUTE SAYS HE HAS BEEN INUNDATED WITH E-MAILS, INCLUDING A MESSAGE FROM TWO PARENTS WHO SAID THEY WERE PLANNING ON KILLING THEIR CHILDREN AND THEMSELVES AHEAD OF THE DAY:
"I have received thousands of e-mails that were sent to NASA's website asking astrobiologists, asking about all aspects of this strange 2012 doomsday hoax, including many from children who are really scared, who say they can't sleep, they can't eat, some are even saying they're contemplating suicide."

S/ LISSETTE RIVERA, CEO, SAFECARENOW.COM:36-:46
S/ SHELLEY SEDOR, ASSISTED LIVING EXEC. DIR.:55-1:05
EVIDENCE LIKE THIS IS ENOUGH TO STRIKE FEAR INTO ANYONE WHO DEPENDS ON A HEALTHCARE WORKER TO CARE FOR AN ELDERLY LOVED ONE. VIRGIN CABALLO'S ABUSE WAS ONLY DISCOVERED AFTER ESTER PISKOR'S SON INSTALLED A HIDDEN CAMERA IN HER ROOM. THE EX-NURSES AID IS NOW SPENDING THE NEXT TEN YEARS BEHIND BARS.
WHEN LISETTE RIVERA SAW THIS STORY SHE FEARED FOR HER MOTHER IN A NURSING HOME AND THEN WANTED TO MAKE SURE CONSUMERS AND HEALTHCARE FACILITIES HAD ANOTHER WAY TO CHECK THE BACKGROUNDS OF THOSE IN CHARGE OF CARE. SIX MONTHS AGO HER WEBSITE, SAFE CARE NOW WENT ON LINE.
"We're like the carfax for the healthcare industry. we continually background check nurses aids against this public data such as certification data abuse listings and then we also check against nationwide criminal records."
SHELLEY SEDOR GETS A REPORT ON HER EMPLOYEES EVERY MONTH.
"Safecare allows us to have that piece of mind and that comfort knowing that my staff is being checked out regularly and they're all on the up and up and there's nothing going on in the background that I'm not aware of."
SAFECARE RUNS THE EMPLOYEE'S NAME AND PROVIDES A REPORT CARD. A RED X INDICATES A PROBLEM AND GIVES THE REASON. TURNOVER IN THIS INDUSTRY IS MORE THAN 85 PERCENT. SO SOMETIMES, A PERSON'S RECORD DOESN'T FOLLOW THEM. UNTIL NOW.
"A lot of people working in facilities work in multiple facilities something could happen at another facility and I would never know."
BUT SHE DOES NOW. AND THERE'S A REASON SHE AND FAMILIES NEED TO KNOW.
"One in five nurse aids that are currently employed have a conviction that should have disqualified them from gaining employment in the first place."
"it's not just caregivers it can be someone working in the kitchen or a housekeeper who you can use this service for as well because if somebody has an abuse claim as an STNA well maybe they go get jobs as a housekeeper because that's flying under the radar."
