BEARS FROM THE BIG CYPRESS NATIONAL PERSEVERE ARE ON THE MOVE TONIGHT--
MANY CHOOSING LEHIGH ACRES AS THEIR NEW HOME.
SO FAR THIS YEAR,
THERE'S BEEN 83 CALLS ABOUT BEAR SIGHTINGS IN LEHIGH ACRES ALONE.
THAT'S THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF CALLS FOR AN URBAN AREA IN THE STATE.
A-B-C 7'S JOELLE PARKS REPORTS ON WHAT'S ATTRACTING BEARS TO THIS AREA

There's a lot of trends Peggy Benstine has noticed in her Lehigh acres neighborhood.
Sot Peggy Benstine, Lehigh Acres resident
There aren't a lot of people out here, there's a lot of foreclosed homes, there's a lot of brush."
All things that are attracting a new population.
A population of black bears.
Sot Angeline Scotten, Fwc Wildlife Assistance Biologist
" we're seeing an increase in bear numbers and were also seeing an increase in bear movement, most of the bears from Lehigh are coming up from big cypress, and Lehigh's not the oly one, the state as a sole has seen a lot of bear issues this year."
The bears are coming for one reason: food.
Sot Angeline
" bears go forecasting 5,000 calories a day to in the fall- 20,000. They're using to put on weight of Floridas really not so hard winter. They have the same instincts as bears up north do."
And why hunt- when foods is readily available.
Sot Angeline
"It's easy, the garbage cans not secure, it's quiet, there's jolting bothering the bear, in a sense they're pretty smart to come in and look for easy food."
It's up to humans to teach bears- that digging rough t he trash is not ok.
Sot Angeline
We just want to remind them that being in an urban area is not good for you."
The hope- they'll go back home on their own.
Sot Angeline
" it's really not a good option to trap the bear, because bears will often come back."
The best method- eliminate their food source by securing trash and pet food.
It's something this residents already done.
Her advice?
Sot Peggy
" just leave them alone."

TWO NORTH FORT MYERS COMMUNITIES COULD BE ON THE VERGE OF A TURF WAR.
HERON'S GLEN SAYS UNLIKE THEIR NEIGHBORS AT MAGNOLIA LANDING--
THEY'RE A PRIVATE COMMUNITY--
AND THEY WANT TO KEEP IT THAT WAY.
ABC-7'S GEORGE SOLIS EXPLAINS WHY
Return to index of stories...
GETTING INTO HERON'S GLEN IS NO EASY TASK
IF YOU GO THROUGH THE FRONT.
BUT BACK HERE IT'S A DIFFERENT STORY.
THAT'S WHAT PROMPTED THIS.
A 'STANDING ROOM ONLY' GATHERING OF RESIDENTS WANTING CARS COMING AND GOING TO STOP.
26:12 "My feeling is, it's our private property, our roads our private. They're not public we maintain them our homeowners pay for them and maintain them."
THIS MORNING HERON'S GLEN RESIDENTS LIKE CHET SUSKE MADE THAT AND ONE OTHER THING CLEAR TO COUNTY STAFF:
MAGNOLIA LANDING RESIDENTS SHOULDN'T HAVE ACCESS TO THEIR COMMUNITY, AND WANT A GATES TO ENSURE THAT HAPPENS.
57:17 "Residents of Heron's Glen are opting for a gate right here of Dennisport road. The idea behind them is to keep the road private from any traffic that comes in from Magnolia Landing." GS
AN ATTORNEY REPRESENTING THE LANDOWNER FOR MAGNOLIA LANDING SAYS IT MAY NOT BE PRIVATE, BUT THEY ARE CONSIDERED A GATED COMMUNITY.
ADDING ANOTHER GATE, IS JUST EXCESSIVE.
Neale Montgomery, Magnolia Landing
19:54 "I understand they're all concerned about security but I'm not sure that the security issue that they're concerned about is as severe as they think it is."
HERON'S GLEN ATTORNEY SAYS THE TWO GROUPS ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO FIND A SOLUTION.
BUT IT'S THE COUNTY WHO GETS THE LAST SAY, AND AT THE MOMENT THEY SAY "NO GATES"
16:28 "Our residents have paid for their own roads and paid for the maintenance, paid for the security that they have to remain a gated community."
COUNTY STAFF WILL TAKE TODAY'S FINDINGS BEFORE COMMISSIONERS, WHO WILL MAKE THE FINAL DECISION ON THE MATTER.
IN LEE COUNTY, GS

The warm afternoon and increased humidity will lead to a few showers again tonight and tomorrow. Patchy fog will likely form again tonight - especially were some of the isolated showers are occurring now.
As we start this next weekend in December we are still looking at 82 - 84 degrees each day. You might also notice that the humidity has been creeping up, and this weekend it will feel a lot more like pre-summer weather than "winter" weather in Florida.
A few showers are popping up on radar this evening and tomorrow we will likely track isolated or scattered showers in the afternoon as well. Our sea breeze will kick in by midday and help with the formation of some clouds and the errant shower on Saturday. I would plan on about a 30% chance for showers to develop tomorrow.
The weather maps look a little quieter for us on Sunday, but it will still be warm. The high will hit 84 degrees to end out the weekend.
Looking into next week we see a cold front arriving on Tuesday. In advance of this front we will see increasing clouds and a chance for showers both Tuesday and Wednesday. It doesn't appear that this next front will cool us off, but the chance for showers does go up. It's been a very dry stretch of weather here since November, so the arrival of any and all rain showers should be welcome news!
Have a great weekend and keep an eye out for a few showers tomorrow.
