IN DEPTH NOW ON OUR TOP STORY AT NINE--
THE NEW JOBS REPORT IS OUT.
ABC7'S TAHMAN BRADLEY TAKES A LOOK AT HOW THE NUMBERS PLAY INTO THE FIGHT OVER THE FISCAL CLIFF.
Return to index of stories...
Even though the fiscal cliff is looming, job creation remains fairly steady.
Today's monthly jobs report was better than expected, with employers hiring
146-thousand workers in November.
But the unemployment rate, now at 7.7 percent, is the lowest since December
2008.
Economists had worried that Superstorm Sandy would slow job creation last
monthjust like they worry about the impact of the fiscal cliff.
Some economists estimate that at least 200,000 fewer jobs have been
created this year due to uncertainty about the fiscal cliff.
SOT Obama
"IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE GET THIS DONE NOW, THAT WE DON'T WAIT."
In Washington, Republicans and Democrats are talking again. But still, no
breakthrough. The parties are locked in a stalemate.
President Obama is demanding that higher tax rates for the wealthy and a
permanent extension of the debt ceiling -- the government's ability to
borrow money -- be part of a deal.
SOT Sen. Mitch McConnell
"HE SHOWED WHAT HE'S REALLY AFTER IS ASSUMING UNPRECEDENTED POWER TO SPEND
TAXPAYER DOLLARS, WITHOUT ANY LIMIT AT ALL."
Republicans, who've signaled they're open to raising tax revenue, say they'
ll only do so in exchange for deep spending cuts.
If Washington can't strike a deal, one casualty would be the end of
compensation for the long term unemployed.
That has people like Melinda Vega, who collects $450 a week in unemployment,
worried.
SOT Melinda Vega, Unemployed
"CHRISTMAS AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE ARE PROBABLY OFF THE TABLE."
Aides to President Obama and Speaker Boehner met yesterday afternoon. But
the meeting ended with no discernible signs of progress.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
An upper level disturbance that brought clouds and widely scattered showers to the area yesterday has finally pushed east of the state. This means we will end the work week on a drier note with warmer than average temperatures.
We'll start the day with temperatures in the lower 60s with the possibility of some patchy fog, which should lift a couple of hours after sunrise. Sunshine will prevail through the late morning hours with partly sunny skies during the afternoon. With a bit more sunshine across our Southwest Florida skies, temperatures will warm into the low 80s with a cooling seabreeze by the coast. The vast majority of us will stay dry during the day, however with sufficient moisture still in place a stray shower can't be ruled out.
Tonight, skies will remain mostly clear to partly cloudy and lows will be rather mild for this time of year in the mid 60s.
Some tropical moisture looks to return to the area over the weekend with the chance for a stray shower or two each and every afternoon. Temperatures will continue to run warmer than average in the lower to middle 80s with overnight lows in the mid 60s.
Partly sunny skies will remain in the forecast early next week with increasing clouds on Tuesday ahead of an approaching cold front. This front doesn't look to bring any cold air; just more clouds and a boost in our rain prospects.

BUT THE BIG QUESTION.DO YOU BUY A WARRANTY?
HERE'S CHRIS CLACKUM -- WITH SOME HELP.
Return to index of stories...
IT HAS BECOME A RITE OF PASSAGE IN RETAIL. THAT WHEN YOU'VE MADE A BIG-TICKET PURCHASE OF APPLIANCES OR ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT.
.THE NEXT THING THE STORE WANTS TO SELL YOU. IS THE EXTENDED WARRANTY.
"One reason stores push them so hard is that there's just a huge profit margin on them, 50% in some cases, a lot more than they make on the products themselves"
GREG DAUGHERTY LED RESEARCH AT CONSUMER REPORTS ON THE VALUE OF EXTENDED WARRANTIES. AND CONCLUDED. TO JUST SAY NO.
"Even if you do have one and try to use it, sometimes you get a runaround, it might take a long time to get the product repaired. you might find it very hard to take it any place if there's no place near you. So, there are any number of stumbling blocks, even if you do have this coverage and you need to use it"
HE SAYS EXTENDED WARRANTIES ARE OFTEN UNNECESSARY BECAUSE REPUTABLE MANUFACTURERS STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS.
"Very often, they will try to fix it even outside of the warranty, just to keep you as a satisfied customer and to protect their brand"
HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE CAN OFFER RIDERS FOR EXTENDED COVERAGE.
.AND HE SAYS DEFINITELY CHECK THE CONTRACT WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD COMPANY.
"Depending on the kind of credit card you have, and we urge consumers to look and make sure, but very often, you will get some sort of extended warranty coverage with a credit card"
ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE HE SAYS IS TO INSURE YOURSELF WITH A REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT FUND IN YOUR BANK ACCOUNT.

AS THE FIGHTING IN SYRIA RAGES ON, SECRETARY OF DEFENSE LEON PANETTA SAYS THE LATEST INTELLIGENCE REPORTS RAISE SERIOUS CONCERNS THAT SYRIAN PRESIDENT BASHAR AL-ASSAD may TURN CHEMICAL WEAPONS ON his own CITIZENS. PANETTA ISSUED THIS WARNING TO THE SYRIAN LEADER.
The whole world is watching, the whole world is watching very closely and the President of the United States has made it very clear that there will be consequences, there will be consequences if the Assad regime makes a terrible mistake by using these chemical weapons on their own people.
DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS TO END THE 21-MONTH CONFLICT IN SYRIA HAVE FAILED. 42-THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED SO FAR, ACCORDING OPPOSITION ACTIVISTS. WITH SO MUCH AT STAKE, SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN SAYS IT MAY BE TIME TO TAKE ACTION.
If true these reports may mean that the United States and our allies are facing the prospect of an imminent use of weapons of mass destruction in Syria and this may be the last warning we get. The time for talking about what to do may now be coming to a close and we may instead be left with an awful and very difficult decision.

TO MANY, THERE'S NOSTALGIA TO SITTING DOWN AND PENNING A HOLIDAY WISH LIST.
To make my list? Paper and pencil. I'm totally old school.
TO OTHERS, IT'S ABOUT MODERN-DAY CONVENIENCE AND GIFTING ACROSS MULTIPLE RETAILERS.
Red Envelope is a good one, Amazon, sometimes even Tiffany if people have been good through the year. It all depends.
DURING THIS SEASON FOR SHARING, THERE ARE MORE TWISTS THAN EVER ON THE TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY WISH LIST.
People used to use paper and pencil, and put it on the refrigerator. I remember doing that when I was growing up. And then different types of websites would have different kinds of digital wish lists for their own website.
SITES LIKE AMAZON, WISHPOT AND TALL WISH LET USERS SHARE LISTS WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS ACROSS SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES WHERE THEY ALREADY INTERACT.
AND THE EXPLOSION IN PINTEREST'S POPULARITY HAS CREATED ANOTHER AVENUE.
I share it with everybody. I make my list on Pinterest, all the pictures are there./ And I have one for my kids, I have one for my husband, he makes one. And it works really well.
Being able to put together a bunch of ideas and then winnow those down and be able to winnow those down, really makes a huge difference. And then you can follow other people's gift ideas as well.
JUST LAST MONTH PINTEREST OPENED UP THE SITE TO BUSINESSES, WHICH MEANS RETAILERS CAN HIGHLIGHT THEIR OWN WARES THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.

Lyster: The elections results in Collier County … had that occurred across the state and across the country, we'd be having a totally different discussion this morning. Eighty-eight-point three percent of our Republicans went out and voted; Mitt Romney got 10,000 more votes than John McCain in 2008 even though there were 21,000 fewer registered voters for this election.
