HELLO-1SHOT PUSH

GOOD MORNING AND THANKS FOR WAKING UP WITH A-B-7 THIS MORNING.

TODAY IS SATURDAY - DECEMBER 8TH.

I'M JOE ROETZ.

WE'VE GOT A LOT TO GET TO THIS MORNING.

INCLUDING THAT SWIFT DECISION TO SEND CONVICTED MURDERER -- ROBERT DUNN TO PRISON FOR LIFE.

BUT BEFORE WE GET TO ALL OF TODAY'S TOP STORIES.

LET'S CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINER -- WITH A FIRST LOOK AT YOUR STORMWARN 7 FORECAST.

KIRA GOOD MORNING. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The calendar says December, but Mother Nature thinks it's still summer. Even though we have the chance for a few showers, the weather story this weekend will not be the rain, but the warmer than average temperatures.

As skies cleared and temperatures cooled into the mid 60s, our day will dawn with patchy fog which could be locally dense in some areas. Visibilities should improve a couple of hours after sunrise with sunshine dominating our skies through the late morning hours.

High pressure will set up shop in the western Atlantic providing us with a southeasterly wind flow. Not only will this pump in some warm air, but it will also drag in some tropical moisture. Temeratures will climb into the lower to middle 80s under partly sunny skies, while a cooling seabreeze will keep our area beaches in the upper 70s. This will set the stage for a few hit or miss style showers, which means not everyone will see the rain as the chance stands at only 30%.

Any shower activity that develops should quickly fade during the evening hours. Overnight, skies will clear and temperatures will settle into the middle 60s with the potential for fog to develop by tomorrow morning.

The second half of the weekend looks to be drier and sunnier as the atmosphere above becomes a bit more stable. With more sunshine in store for Sunday, temperatures will run 5 to 7° above average.

Next week our weather pattern will become a bit more unsettled as moisture returns to Southwest Florida ahead of an approaching cold front. This front will not bring any cold air, but it will bring more clouds and the chance for scattered rain both Tuesday and Wednesday with a slight drop in humidity by the end of the week Return to index of stories...

THE U-S SUPREME COURT DECIDES TO TAKE UP THE SAME SEX MARRIAGE DEBATE.

SCOTUS TO HEAR GAY MARRIAGE-PKG

THE DECISION BY THE U-S SUPREME COURT TO LOOK AT SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IS OF SPECIAL INTEREST TO CALIFORNIA.

.WHERE SUCH MARRIAGES WERE APPROVED IN 2008. ONLY TO BE BANNED LATER THAT YEAR THROUGH A CONTROVERSIAL STATE WIDE REFERENDUM KNOWN AS PROPOSITION 8.

"Proposition 8 needs to be struck down and then hopefully we can begin marriages here in this building and throughout the state of California as quickly as possible."

"We're pretty confident that the Supreme Court is going to uphold the right of the people to amend their own constitution to preserve traditional marriage."

THE HIGH COURT WILL DECIDE WHETHER IT AGREES WITH A LOWER COURT RULING EARLIER THIS YEAR.

.THAT STRUCK DOWN PROP 8 BECAUSE AS THE LOWER COURT SAID, IT "SERVES NO PURPOSE, HAS NO EFFECT OTHER THAN LESSEN THE STATUS AND HUMAN DIGNITY OF GAYS AND LESBIANS"

NBC'S PETE WILLIAMS REPORTS THAT BY TAKING UP THE CALIFORNIA CASE, THE COURT COULD GET TO A MORE FUNDAMENTAL QUESTION.

"Which is.can any state say that it's unconstitutional or against the law for same sex couples to get married"

THE SUPREME COURT ALSO AGREED TO HEAR A CHALLENGE TO THE FEDERAL DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT, KNOWN AS DOMA.

. PASSED BY OVERWHELMING MARGINS IN BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS IN 1996 AND SIGNED BY PRESIDENT CLINTON.

A PROVISION OF THE LAW SPECIFIES THAT, FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES, "THE WORD 'MARRIAGE' MEANS ONLY A LEGAL UNION BETWEEN ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN AS HUSBAND AND WIFE." Return to index of stories...

FISCAL CLIFF AND JOBS REPORT-PKG

"Thank you to all the folks around the table here."

CAMPAIGNING AS IF THERE'S ANOTHER ELECTION JUST AROUND THE CORNER. VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN SAT DOWN FOR LUNCH WITH A GROUP OF INVITED GUESTS IN VIRGINIA. ON THE TABLE. WERE THE FISCAL CLIFF.AND A NEW MONTHLY JOBS REPORT THAT BEAT MANY ANALYSTS' EXPECTATIONS.

"This is no time to add any additional burden on middle class people. As the old expression used to go this ain't rocket science."

AFTER SUPERSTORM SANDY DID NOT DELIVER THE BLOW TO THE JOBS MARKET. THAT ECONOMISTS FEARED. ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS ARE SOUNDING MORE CONFIDENT.

"There could be changes possibly in the next month but for this for all intents and purposes this report looks to me like it's a steady report."

AS FOR THAT OTHER STORM ON THE HORIZON. THE FISCAL CLIFF. THERE APPEARED TO BE A MOMENTARY BREAK IN THE CLOUDS. WHEN HOUSE SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER SEEMED TO SUGGEST HE MIGHT BE OPEN TO A TAX RATE INCREASE ON WEALTHIER AMERICANS. JUST WHAT THE PRESIDENT WANTS.

"There are a lot for things that are possible to put the revenue that the President seeks on the table but none of it's going to be possible if the President insists on his position, insists on 'my way or the highway'."

BUT HOURS LATER, BOEHNER PUT OUT A STATEMENT. SAYING. AS I'VE SAID MANY, MANY, MANY TIMES: I OPPOSE TAX RATE INCREASES BECAUSE TAX RATE INCREASES COST AMERICAN JOBS. THAT HAS NOT CHANGED, AND WILL NOT CHANGE. DEMOCRATS SAY THAT JUST WON'T WORK.

"Could it be because the Republicans are holding the middle income tax cuts, as they have all along, hostage to tax cuts for the wealthy?"

BUT AFTER A WEEK IN WHICH REPUBLICANS IN BOTH THE HOUSE AND SENATE SIGNALED A WILLINGNESS TO RAISE RATES. ONE GOP SENATOR RAND PAUL CAME UP WITH ANOTHER SOLUTION.

"All the Republicans in the House vote present and let the Democrats raise taxes as high as they want to raise them. Let Democrats in the Senate raise taxes. Let the president sign it and then they can own a tax increase."

ECONOMISTS SAY THE UNCERTAINTY OVER THE FISCAL CLIFF. COULD STOP A RECOVERY THAT'S GAINING STEAM.DEAD IN ITS TRACKS.

"We're seen a number of companies actually come out and say listen it's not that we're firing we're just delaying hiring and delaying investment projects. And that's very important because delays in an already weak economy, you don't want hesitation." Return to index of stories...

Yeah--adds some weight to the bag.

NOW THE F-C-C -- THE AGENCY BEHIND CELL PHONE BANS IN THE AIR -- IS ENCOURAGING THE F-A-A TO ALLOW GREATER USE OF ELECTRONICS DURING FLIGHTS.

I'm ok w it, I don't necessarily do it but its a rule what are you going to do.

THE F-C-C CHAIRMAN SAYS MOBILE DEVICES EMPOWER PEOPLE TO STAY INFORMED AND CONNECTED WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY, AND THEY ENABLE BOTH LARGE AND SMALL BUSINESSES TO BE MORE PRODUCTIVE AND EFFICIENT. IT'S A GOVERNMENT EFFORT TO BALANCE WHAT PASSENGERS WANT AND SAFETY CONCERNS. AIRLINE PILOTS CAN USE iPAD FLIGHT MANUALS, BEGGING THE QUESTION.IF THEY CAN, WHY CAN'T WE?

When we use this device, all the transmission capability is turned off. The problem in the cabin is that there's so many possible combination of personal devices -- cellphones and iPads - that the industry hasn't come up with an acceptable test standard to truly determine if in those infinite combinations there's interference.

A RECENT STUDY NOTED 75 INSTANCES IN WHICH CONSUMER ELECTRONICS WERE SUSPECTED OF DISRUPTING AIRPLANE SYSTEMS. SOME ARE SKEPTICAL.

I don't think it really affects the planes any. So I think of it more of an optional rule if that makes sense.

I think that someone needs to prove to me that it's really an issue. I don't know if it's true or not.

CARL BIERSACK WITH A CELL PHONE ADVOCACY GROUP WANTS TO TAKE THIS ONE STEP FURTHER.

People do more than just the iPad and the Nook, they actually want to talk to someone. That's what a cell phone is all about. Return to index of stories...

MAIN WEATHER-WX WALL

Temperatures will climb into the lower to middle 80s under partly sunny skies, while a cooling seabreeze will keep our area beaches in the upper 70s.

ELISHA MURPHY HEARS THE SAME MESSAGE EVERY TIME SHE GOES TO THE DOCTOR. YOU NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT.

"I have dealt with my weight since I was 8 years old I have had a weight problem that long."

AT 5' 2"' 425 POUNDS AND A BMI OF 83. ELISHA IS MORBIDLY OBESE.

"I don't live like pole on reality tv with these people that weight 1000 pounds and lay in bed and do nothing but eat. that's not me."

SHE IS A MOTHER WHO RECENTLY HAD A CYCLE THAT GOT OUT OF CONTROL.

"I was dealing with a lot of heavy bleeding and it was almost everyday."

WHEN OTHER TREATMENT OPTIONS FAILED. HER DOCTOR, HUBERT FORNALIK RECOMMENDED A MINIMALLY INVASIVE HYSTERECTOMY WITH THE DA VINCI ROBOT. IT'S COMES WITH LESS COMPLICATIONS THAN CUTTING OPEN THE ABDOMEN. BUT CAN BE TRICKY WITH LARGE PATIENTS.

"We see all the time that patient like Elisha like with obesity they are told they cannot have the surgery because of their size and quite often those surgeries are indicated and needed but delayed."

PART OF THE PROBLEM IS WITH PELVIC SURGERY. THE OPERATING ROOM TABLE IS PUT AT A 45 DEGREE INCLINE WITH THE PATIENTS HEAD DOWN. BARIATRIC SURGERY IS JUST THE OPPOSITE.

WHEN THE HEAD IS DOWN. THE WEIGHT OF THE ABDOMEN PRESSES ON THE LUNGS. IT CAN MAKE BREATHING DIFFICULT.

DR. FORNALIK ORDERED EXTENSIONS TO WIDEN THE BIG AND THE FOOT AREA. AND WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE ANESTHESIOLOGIST TO MAKE THE SURGERY POSSIBLE FOR ELISHA.

IN FACT, SHE WENT HOME THE NEXT DAY.

"The best thing about life now is not bleeding everyday. My hope that is that there are other people out there that desperately need the help that feel like because of their weight they can't get the help that they need." Return to index of stories...
