GOOD MORNING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
TODAY IS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9TH.
I'M JOE ROETZ.
BEFORE WE GET TO OUR BIG STORIES OF THE DAY - LETS CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINER WITH OUR STORMWARN 7 FORECAST.
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
The official high at Page Field yesterday reached 84° with a little bit more than a third of an inch in the rain gauge. This unseasonable warmth will stick around as we close at the weekend with temperatures running 5 - 7° above the average.
Due to the saturated grounds, high humidity, and light winds, fog will be a good bet on this Sunday morning. In some spots the fog could become quite dense limiting visibilities on area roadways to less than 1/4 of a mile.
Once the low clouds and fog lift, plenty of sunshine will fill our Southwest Florida skies. Unlike yesterday, rain prospects will remain on the lower end of the spectrum as our atmosphere has become a bit more stable. This will keep a few clouds mixing in with our sunshine through the afternoon with highs working their way into the mid 80s away from the coast, while the west coast seabreeze keeps our coastal communities in the upper 70s. With plenty of heat and humidity in play, a couple of isolated showers can't be ruled out late in the day, however the vast majority of us should stay mainly dry.
Early in the week, our weather pattern will become more unsettled as an onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico pumps in plenty of tropical moisture ahead of an approaching cold front. A mix of sun of clouds will kick off the new work week, and while rain chances stand at about 30% any activity that develops will get pushed deeper inland throughout the day.
Our skies will turn mostly cloudy Tuesday and Wednesday as a cold front makes it's way down the peninsula and gives our rain prospects quite a boost. With no cold air in sight, our streak of warm weather days will continue, however a slight drop in the humidity may be felt by the end of the week.

THE CESSNA-421 TOOK OFF FROM LANTANA AIRPORT JUST AFTER 1:30.
"Bystanders are saying that it almost immediately lost power."
WITHIN SECONDS, FIRE OFFICIALS SAY THE PLANE BEGAN TO FREE FALL.
"And it crashed into John Prince Park."
THE PUBLIC PARK WHICH IS LOCATED RIGHT NEXT TO THE AIRPORT WAS BUSY ON A SATURDAY AFTERNOON.
A LARGE CROWD WATCHED AS THE PLANE BURST INTO FLAMES.
"The palm trees were on fire, the aircraft was on fire."
ALL THAT WAS LEFT AFTER FIRE CREWS GOT TO THE SCENE WAS A CHARRED, MANGLED MESS OF METAL.
RAUL SAMPSON LIVES NEARBY AND SAW THE DEBRIS BURNING.
''Everything is burned on the ground, nothing left, everything burned right up."
THE PILOT WAS THE ONLY ONE INSIDE THE PLANE HE DIED ON IMPACT.
HIS LOVED ONES GATHERED AT THE CRASH SITE, BUT POLICE HAVE NOT RELEASED ANY NAMES.
THE N-T-S-B WILL ARRIVE ON MONDAY TO BEGIN THEIR INVESTIGATION.
UNTIL THEN, THE WRECKAGE WILL REMAIN AT THE PARK, GUARDED BY SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES.
THE AIRPLANE WAS FULL OF FUEL WHEN IT CRASHED.
FIRE TEAMS WERE ABLE TO PUT OUT THE INTENSE FLAMES PRETTY QUICK.
AND THEY SAY NO JET FUEL LEAKED INTO THE NEARBY PUBLIC PARK.
"Most of the fuel was burned off, we extinguished it, none of it got into the lake."

THE C-D-C SAYS THE COUNTRY IS ALREADY IN THE MIDST OF FLU SEASON,
WITH MORE AND MORE CASES BEING REPORTED.
AND CHILDREN ARE AMONG THOSE SEEN AS ESPECIALLY VULNERABLE.
ROBERT BAZELL REPORTS.

Flu continues to spread throughout the country -- with this season starting early and threatening to become one of the worst in almost a decade.
GFX: CDC data show that last week all states had some flu activity and in eight, it is widespread, up from four the week before.
Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis is feeling the first wave.
SOT Dr. Jon McCullers: we've seen more than 200 cases of flu in the hospital this week and we're admitting 8 to 10 kids a day/ we expect it to accelerate -- to get worse before it gets better in the next few weeks.
School children are not only vulnerable, they play a big role in spreading the flu.
SOT McCullers: When you have all these kids getting together, they tend to pass the virus back and forth, they all get sick in the school and they bring it home into the community.
GFX: So far nationally this year five children have died from the flu. In the 2009-10 season when a new strain appeared 279 died.
Health officials are urging everyone -- adults and children over 6 months old to get vaccinated.
STAND UP: The vaccine is not a guarantee against wintertime illness, but it does greatly reduces the chances of severe disease -- especially for those 65 and over who have naturally weakened immune systems.
Sot Frieden: The way to protect those people is to vaccinate the people around them./ so vaccinating more children reduces the risk of older people in the community of getting the flu.
