GOOD MORNING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
TODAY IS SUNDAY DECEMBER 30TH.
I'M JOE ROETZ
BEFORE WE GET TO OUR BIG STORIES OF THE DAY - LETS CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINER FOR YOUR STORMWARN 7 FORECAST.
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
A cold front made its way through Southwest Florida with very little fanfare yesterday. Clouds made for a gloomy Saturday and at the most, very few locations picked up more than.10" of rain. Now that the clouds have cleared overnight, northerly winds have taken over ushering in some refreshing changes for the last Sunday of the year.
You'll definitely want that heater running early this morning as temperatures have plummeted into the upper 40s in the urban area, with lower to middle 40s registering on the thermometers across our inland communities. A dry dome of high pressure will be settling in from the north and west resulting in wall to wall sunshine through the afternoon. With cool air riding down the spine of the peninsula, afternoon highs will remain well below the norm with middle 60s in the forecast with just a few fair weather clouds.
Winds will stay a bit breezy from the north and northeast with occasional gusts close to 25mph. This will make it feel even cooler than what the thermometer is actually reading.
A few clouds will prevail tonight and it will wind up being another one with temperatures tumbling into the upper 40s to lower 50s. As 2012 comes to a close, a dry weather pattern will hold in place with a nice warming trend in store. We'll welcome the New Year on Tuesday with partly sunny skies and highs near 80° after a cool start in the upper 50s.
Rain prospects become a bit better by the Thursday/Friday timeframe with the approach of another cold front.

DEMOCRATIC AND REPUBLICAN LEADERS ARE WORKING THROUGH THE WEEKEND IN AN EFFORT TO KEEP THE COUNTRY FROM GOING OVER THE "FISCAL CLIFF."
WE ARE NOW AT LESS THAN TWO DAYS AND COUNTING DOWN.

JESSICA YELLIN HAS THE LATEST.

IN WASHINGTON, THERE IS STILL HOPE A DEAL CAN BE CUT IN TIME TO AVERT THE FISCAL CLIFF. ON SATURDAY THE PRESIDENT WAS AT WORK HERE AT THE WHITE HOUSE, BUT ALL EYES WERE UP ON THE SENATE WHERE NEGOTIATORS WERE TRADING DEAL POINTS AND REVENUE FIGURES, TO TRY TO REACH AN AGREEMENT ALL SIDES CAN STOMACH.
THE BASE LINE FOR THE PRESIDENT - ANY BIPARTISAN BILL WOULD HAVE TO EXTEND UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS THAT WOULD AFFECT SOME TWO MILLION AMERICANS.
AND IT WOULD HAVE TO INCREASE TAXES ON THE HIGHEST INCOME EARNERS.
BUT NEGOTIATORS COULD STILL WORK OUT EXACTLY WHERE THOSE TAX INCREASES WOULD HIT AND WHETHER THEY WOULD HALT AN INCREASE IN THE ESTATE TAX.
NOW IN CASE THAT DEAL BREAKS DOWN, THE PRESIDENT HAS ASKED DEMOCRATIC LEADER HARRY REID TO PREPARE A SEPARATE BILL TO PUT ON THE SENATE FLOOR.
THAT BILL WOULD INCREASE TAXES FOR HOUSEHOLDS THAT EARN 250-THOUSAND DOLLARS OR MORE.
NOW THAT'S A DEMOCRATIC PROPOSAL, AND YOU CAN EXPECT REPUBLICANS WOULD BLOCK IT.
SO RATHER THAN THINKING OF THAT AS A STOP-GAP MEASURE, THINK OF IT AS A POLITICAL MOVE TO TRY TO SHIFT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF FAILURE ONTO REPUBLICANS JUST BEFORE THE NATION REACHES THE HOUR OF RECKONING.

In Seattle, entrepreneur Brendan Kennedy is putting his Yale M-B-A to work at what's apparently the nation's first private equity firm focused solely on marijuana.
. counting on the growing acceptance of it -- first for medical and now recreational use -- to fuel a boom:
"It's an industry that's in desperate need of professionalism."
His group's maiden effort is this website, a subscription-only service offering reader reviews of hundreds of different strains of marijuana, along with where to get them:
"It's a chance to create an entire new industry. You don't get opportunities like that many times in your lifetime. Everything will be created from scratch."
One study says the marijuana market is worth two-billion dollars a year and could reach 9 billion in five years, eventually doubling to 20 billion.
But there's a huge catch. Growing, selling, and using marijuana is still against FEDERAL law.
As a result, banks won't do business with the marijuana trade.
No checking accounts, no convenient way to pay salaries.
. and no ability to accept credit cards, since they're controlled by banks.
And no one in the marijuana industry can DEDUCT expenses from their federal taxes, as any other business can.
"The federal government has a long history of being very, very opposed to marijuana, and I don't think that's going to change so easily. And so you could start in on this, and find out it's years or decades before it's a legal product."
"Justice Department lawyers will soon decide whether to sue the marijuana states. The government is waiting to see how the new recreational laws actually work and what effect they'll have on the flow of illegal drugs from Mexico.
"We have treaty obligations out, with nations outside the United States. There are a whole variety of things that have to go into the determination that we are in the process of making."
Adding to the uncertainty for entrepreneurs like Brendan Kennedy, in a risky business.

After 11 days locked up for using profanity, she was free.but there was no celebration.
:10- 24
Q: How does that freedom feel? "Wonderful. Wonderful. Wonderful. I guess right now I'm just speechless, I'm tired. I've just been through so much."
LaRue Ford was charged with contempt after cursing at the Berrien County District Court Clerk's Office in Niles early this month.
She admits cursing, but says it was to herself as she left the clerk's office -- frustrated after getting the runaround while trying to clear up an old traffic ticket.
When she returned with $50 to finally clear it up, Judge Dennis Wiley ordered her arrested.
:47- 50
"You know, it wasn't even necessary to put me through all of this."
She'd been locked up since Dec. 18th on a $5,000 bond.
:55- 56
"11 days."
But today, at the request of an ACLU attorney, Circuit Judge Alfred Butzbaugh overruled Niles Judge Dennis Wiley and reduced her bond.allowing her to walk free.
The ACLU claims Judge Wiley overstepped his authority, violating her constitutional rights.
Today, she thanked those who listened.
1:15- 1:32
"People listening, people listening to my story because they didn't believe me when I told em. They didn't believe me. So someone listened. And that's what helped me get out of here or I would still be in there."
But, she still faces the contempt charge.
1:34- 1:42
"No, this fight's not over. I thought it would be, but it's not over. I still have to come back."
1:43- 1:53
"We don't have ultimately a whole, a win yet, as to the contempt charge but I feel like we got what we wanted to get today.
Today, LaRue rode away with a friend, while her family drove up from Chicago.
"Praise the lord."
