Track 1: Students arrived by bus at the new Sandy Hook Elementary School to
face what turned out to be a very ordinary day.
Police termed it mundane, with nothing to reportexactly what they wanted as
the children and teachers came together for the first time since the
December 14th shootings in Newtown.
SOT: "Most of the kids were excited, they
were anxious to get in, the teachers had the same response, they were all
glad to see them all together."
Track 2: Police held a meeting with parents, to talk about security. They
call the new school -- located in nearby Monroe- the safest school in the
country.
SOT: "Parents were concerned about security.board wanted to address
their concerns, they were satisfied with the answers they received."
Track 3: What Police WON'T address are the exact security measures they've
taken.
Administrators have shared more about what's inside the building, including
replicas of their old classrooms and decorations sent from all over the
world to comfort the children.
NATS Lauren
First grader Lauren Milgram had some extra company to help her through what
administrators are calling "Opening Day."
She's in Kaitlyn Roig's first grade class the teacher hailed as a hero for
hiding her students when gunman, Adam Lanza, burst into the school.
This morningLauren's mom followed the bus to school and spent the day there.
SOT: "I haven't gotten that far yet, about not being with them. I
just need to stay with them for a while."
Standup: "Police say there were therapy dogs
inside the school, as well as counselors. And there was a familiar face-
Shelley the turtle, the school's mascot who also helped welcome back the
students. Wendy Gillette, ABC News, Monroe, CT."

CLOUDS ON THE RISE
It is hard to believe that it is early January. All this sunshine has helped our temperatures climb into the lower 80s for several days now. With a cold front approaching from our north - will that all change? Not quite.
We are only expecting added cloud cover with this front. In fact, we will actually experience a warm up after it passes.
It is currently moving at a snail's pace, but eventually it will move over Southwest Florida and then stall on top of us. It will essentially split the area in two. This means Central Lee County and areas North will see more clouds for Friday than areas South of Central Lee County.
Patchy dense fog can be expected for another night. Areas seeing the densest fog will be Collier County and our interior communities. Along with the fog we will start the day with a mostly cloudy sky and temperatures in the 50 to 60 degree range.
With the front hanging out on top of us we will stay mostly cloudy sky during the day. I would not be surprised if we had a few rogue showers to track on First Alert Live Doppler Radar, but the chance is less than 30 percent.
Daytime highs in the 80s can be expected across Collier County on Friday. Everyone else will hold in the upper 70s.
This front stays in place over the weekend. Saturday will be a partly cloudy but dry day. Sunday on the other hand will be different. Our weather pattern will get a little punch in the upper atmosphere, and that will instigate scattered showers for Sunday and Monday.
Our lonely front is finally getting kicked out on Monday, and once it does the sunshine will return. Sorry, but there is not cold air behind the front. 80 degree temperatures are expected next week, too.

THESE SIMPLE STEPS CAN HELP YOU SAVE
Return to index of stories...
WHILE THERE IS ALL KINDS OF TALK ABOUT THE NATION'S FISCAL CLIFF, WHAT ABOUT YOUR OWN FINANCIAL SITUATION, HERE'S FIVE TIPS NEARLY EVERYBODY CAN DO TO KICK OFF THE NEW YEAR.
NUMBER FIVE, GET YOUR FINANCIAL HOUSE IN ORDER.
"It's looking at two things one is cash flow what do you have coming in and what do you have going out, but also what assets you have and what liabilities you have and what are you worth today."
NUMBER 4, IF YOUR NOT DOING SO ALREADY MAX OUT YOUR RETIREMENT OR 401K ACCOUNTS, ESPECIALLY IF THERE'S A COMPANY MATCH.
"It's free money, you want to take advantage of it. It's hard to think about retirement sometimes depending upon your age but the earlier start the easier it is."
NUMBER THREE RUN YOUR CREDIT REPORT AND IF THERE IS ANY SORT OF DEBT, MAKE A PLAN TO GET RID OF IT.
WHICH BRINGS US TO NUMBER 2, IF YOU'RE GETTING A TAX REFUND EACH YEAR, WHILE IT MAY SEEM LIKE A GOOD THING, IT'S NOT.
IT'S MONEY THAT YOU COULD HAVE RECEIVED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
"If you're living beyond your means and you have credit card debt. you're paying interest to a credit card company, but you're giving your money to uncle sam on the other hand and not getting any interest for it and so getting a refund is a negative thing, you want to make sure you're giving that money to yourself."
Return to index of stories...
LASTLY NUMBER 1, IT'S THE LAST THING WE TEND TO THINK OF, BUT IT MAKES FINANCIAL SENSE TO THINK ABOUT AND FIGURE OUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO YOUR ESTATE, WHEN YOU'RE NO LONGER AROUND.
FINANCIAL EXPERTS SAY AT A BARE MINIUMUM - YOU SHOULD HAVE A HEALTHCARE DIRECTIVE AND A DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY THAT SAYS WHERE YOU WANT YOUR MONEY TO GO.

BRAIN ANEURYSMS RUPTURE IN ABOUT 30 THOUSAND PEOPLE EVERY YEAR, KILLING OR DISABLING MANY.
WOMEN ARE AT A HIGHER RISK FOR ANEURYSMS THAN MEN.
NOW, RESEARCHERS ARE TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT HOW A MAJOR CHANGE IN A WOMAN'S LIFE COULD BE TO BLAME.

"The left side of my body got numb."
SANDE SKINNER THOUGHT SHE WAS HAVING A STROKE.
"It didn't feel right."
THIS WAS THE PROBLEM.
"It's a giant aneurysm."
YOU CAN SEE RIGHT HERE HOW BIG THE BULGING ARTERY IN HER BRAIN REALLY WAS.
"The little sucker is right behind my right optic nerve."
IF RUPTURED, BRAIN ANEURYSMS CAN LEAD TO STROKE OR DEATH. RISK FACTORS INCLUDE SMOKING, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND POSSIBLY LOWER ESTROGEN LEVELS CAUSED BY MENOPAUSE. TWO OF THE LARGEST BRAIN ANEURYSM TRIALS IN THE WORLD FOUND MOST HAPPEN IN MENOPAUSAL WOMEN.
"Average age of rupture of all patients with aneurysms is age 52, which just so happens to be the average age of menopause."
DOCTOR MICHAEL CHEN SAYS SEVERE DROPS IN ESTROGEN MAY CONTRIBUTE TO THE WEAKENING OF ARTERY WALLS. HE CONDUCTED A STUDY OF 60 WOMEN WITH ANEURYSMS AND FOUND, COMPARED TO THE GENERAL POPULATION, THEY WERE LESS LIKELY TO HAVE TAKEN BIRTH CONTROL OR TO BE ON HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY. HE BELIEVES ESTROGEN TREATMENTS COULD HELP PREVENT WOMEN FROM DEVELOPING ANEURYSMS.
"Protect them from the effects of these severe changes and hormones on their blood vessels."
NOW, THE DOCTOR IS ENROLLING A NEW TRIAL TO PUT HIS THEORY TO THE TEST. HE'LL USE LOW-DOSE HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY IN PRE-MENOPAUSAL WOMEN IN HOPES OF STOPPING ANEURYSMS FROM FORMING.
AFTER THREE SURGERIES AND SEVERAL STENTS
…SANDE'S ANEURYSM IS NO LONGER A THREAT
"I'm still walking and talking."
THE DOCTOR HOPES HIS RESEARCH WILL HELP WIPE OUT THE THREAT FOR EVERY WOMAN.

DOCTOR CHEN'S STUDY WILL START OFF WITH ABOUT 40 TO 50 WOMEN WITH TREATED AND UNTREATED ANEURYSMS.
HE HOPES IT WILL EVENTUALLY EXPAND INTO A MULTI-CENTER TRIAL AROUND THE COUNTRY.
