IT'S BEEN ANOTHER DIFFICULT AND EMOTIONAL DAY IN NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT.
FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE DEADLY SHOOTING SPREE AT SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY - STUDENTS AND TEACHERS RETURNED TO CLASS.
AND THEY'RE FOCUSED ON SOMETHING FAR MORE CHALLENGING THAN MATH OR ENGLISH.
Return to index of stories...
FOR SANDY HOOK SURVIVORS IT'S THE FIRST DAY. IN WHAT WILL BE A LONG, AND DIFFICULT JOURNEY.
THIS PART OF THAT TRIP FOR MANY, BY BUS - TO A NEW SCHOOL. IN ANOTHER TOWN, SEVEN MILES AWAY.
"the kids all got off the bus, a lot of them were happy to see their friends they hadn't seen in a while. they're excited about the new school."
ALMOST THREE WEEKS AFTER THE ATTACK AT THEIR OLD SCHOOL. THAT ENDED WITH 20 CLASSMATES. AND SIX STAFF MEMBERS LOST IN A WAVE OF GUNFIRE.
"it's hard to imagine the kids being there, but also the teachers being there in that incident, what that's doing to them psychologically."
EVEN HARDER TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MIGHT TAKE TO MOVE-ON.
LILIA ALVAREZ TALKED ABOUT THAT AFTER TAKING HER LITTLE GIRL BACK TO SCHOOL THIS MORNING.
we try not to talk about the same things over and over. trying to get back to normal.
COUNSELORS AND ADMINISTRATORS SAY AN IMPORTANT PART OF THAT PROCESS CAME TODAY - AS STUDENTS RETURNED TO THE STRUCTURE AND ROUTINE OF THE CLASSROOM.
UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYES OF A HEAVY POLICE PRESENCE IN AND AROUND THE SCHOOL.
the Monroe police have worked very diligently with the newtown police so that we can all feel very comfortable and secure.
SECURITY GOVERNOR DANNEL MALLOY TALKED ABOUT TODAY AS HE ANNOUNCED A SPECIAL COMMISSION FORMED IN THE WAKE OF THE TRAGEDY.
CT 1:20 - 1:23
"We will work together to make our state model for the rest of the nation."
GOVERNOR MALLOY WANTS SUGGESTIONS FOR WHAT HE CALLS "MEANINGFUL POLICY CHANGES" BY MARCH 15TH.
WHILE MOST HERE, UNDERSTAND IT WILL TAKE MUCH LONGER TO FIND THE ANSWERS THEY ARE LOOKING FOR.

It is hard to believe that it is early January. All this sunshine has helped our temperatures climb into the lower 80s for several days now. With a cold front approaching from our north - will that all change? Not quite.
We are only expecting added cloud cover with this front. In fact, we will actually experience a warm up after it passes.
It is currently moving at a snail's pace, but eventually it will move over Southwest Florida and then stall on top of us. It will essentially split the area in two. This means Central Lee County and areas North will see more clouds for Friday than areas South of Central Lee County.
Patchy dense fog can be expected for another night. Areas seeing the densest fog will be Collier County and our interior communities. Along with the fog we will start the day with a mostly cloudy sky and temperatures in the 50 to 60 degree range.
With the front hanging out on top of us we will stay mostly cloudy sky during the day. I would not be surprised if we had a few rogue showers to track on First Alert Live Doppler Radar, but the chance is less than 30 percent.
Daytime highs in the 80s can be expected across Collier County on Friday. Everyone else will hold in the upper 70s.
This front stays in place over the weekend. Saturday will be a partly cloudy but dry day. Sunday on the other hand will be different. Our weather pattern will get a little punch in the upper atmosphere, and that will instigate scattered showers for Sunday and Monday.
Our lonely front is finally getting kicked out on Monday, and once it does the sunshine will return. Sorry, but there is not cold air behind the front. 80 degree temperatures are expected next week, too.
