THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Typically during the month of January, cold fronts will move pretty quickly across the peninsula bringing some cooler and drier air. That is simply not the case with this front as it has meandered across Southwest Florida for the last couple of days.
We'll start our morning with low clouds and patchy dense fog once again, as humidity stays high along with temperatures in the middle 60s. The front that has stayed parked over us for the last 24 hours, will continue to retreat to the north as a warm front through the day. This will keep our Sunday warmer than average with highs in the lower 80s, along with higher humidity values with a mix of sun and clouds.
Through the afternoon, an area of low pressure will track across the Gulf of Mexico toward the central portion of the state. The better rain chance will stay north towards the Tampa Bay area, however a couple of isolated showers can't be ruled out during the peak heating hours of they day. As this front gets pushed a bit farther south during the evening and overnight hours, a few scattered showers will be moving across Southwest Florida and linger overnight and into early Monday morning.
Once the front fades and fizzles out, we're not expecting much of a cool down. In fact, afternoon highs through the middle part of the week will stay unseasonably warm in the upper 70s to lower 80s with lows settling into the middle 60s. A bit more sunshine will be in the forecast for Tuesday and beyond with a mainly dry weather pattern in place.

THIS MORNING WE'RE TRACKING HOW MUCH IT'S GOING TO COST YOU TO FILL UP YOUR TANK WIT GAS.
THE AVERAGE PRICE IS 3-39 HERE IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
BUT WHAT ABOUT GAS PRICES?
BOB HANSEN HAS A FORECAST.
Return to index of stories...
IT WAS A WILD RIDE AT THE GAS PUMP IN 2012, WHERE PRICES AVERAGED JUST ABOVE 4 DOLLARS A GALLON. GAS PRICES SKYROCKETED ONE MINUTE AND FELL THE NEXT. DIFFERENCE OF MORE THAN A DOLLAR A GALLON.
"I guess we're getting used to it and that's unfortunate, it's too high."
DRIVERS HAD TO FIND WAYS TO DEAL WITH RECORD HIGH PRICES. AS HIGH AS 4-71 A GALLON AT ONE POINT.
"I do a lot of my shopping, a lot of my errands, close to home."
BUT CHANGING YOUR ROUTINE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH TO BE READY FOR 2013. WHERE PRICES COULD ONCE AGAIN HIT RECORD TERRITORY.
"Yeah, I think we're at the point now where 4 dollars a gallon seems cheap. And I think by the end of next year we may not raise an eyebrow at 5 dollars a gallon. I think that's where we're headed."
BUT WILL DRIVERS ACCEPT PRICES THAT HIGH?
"Well I'm pessimistic, I think prices are going to go up."
"I think we've come to the realization t hat gas prices are going to continue to go up."
"The thing about gas prices, there are so many factors that can make them go up. problems in the middle east, problems in our own backyard."
"When one or two major refineries announces a problem or a rumor of problems, the market reacts by raising the price. whether there really is a problem or not."
OIL INDUSTRY WATCHDOG CHARLES LANGLEY SAYS THIS COULD BE A VERY EXPENSIVE YEAR FOR DRIVERS. PEOPLE I TALKED TO TODAY AT THE GAS PUMP SAY THEY ARE NO LONGER SHOCKED WATCHING PRICES CLIMB AND THEIR FUEL BILLS GO HIGHER AND HIGHER.
"I think the public has been conditioned yeah, to accept the higher prices."

POLICE SAY 17-YEAR-OLD DEREK SHROUT IS A SELF-PROCLAIMED WHITE SUPREMACIST WHO WANTED TO COMMIT HATE CRIMES AT RUSSELL COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL WITH HOMEMADE EXPLOSIVES.
HAD THIS BOOK OF PLANS NOT BEEN CARELESSLY LEFT WHERE A TEACHER COULD FIND IT, THE SHERIFF SAYS NO ONE MAY HAVE DISCOVERED THE PLOT UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE.
"The journal contained several plans that looked like potential terrorist attacks, and attacks of violence and danger on the school. And in particular, there were six students specifically named, and one teacher."
'Have you ever seen this guy in school before?'
"I've got a class with him."
'And did he ever strike you as a guy who would do something like this?'
"No, he used to look at me but, I thought he just looked at people like that."
'Did you ever see him having problems with people before?'
"No, I've seen him chewing tobacco though."
AFTER THE TEACHER WHO FOUND HIS JOURNAL NOTIFIED AUTHORITIES, POLICE SEARCHED HIS HOME AND FOUND DOZENS OF TOBACCO CONTAINERS FILLED WITH SHRAPNEL AND HOLES DRILLED FOR FUSES.
INVESTIGATORS SAY SHROUT WAS A STEP AWAY FROM TURNING THEM INTO LIVE GRENADES.
POLICE SAY THEY DON'T BELIEVE HIS PARENTS HAD ANY IDEA THIS WAS HAPPENING. I CONTACTED SHROUT'S MOTHER AT HIS FORT MITCHELL HOME BUT SHE DID NOT WANT TO MAKE A STATEMENT.
WHEN SHROUT WAS INTERROGATED BY AUTHORITIES, HIS EXPLANATION TO THEM WAS THAT HE HAD WRITTEN A WORK OF FICTION AND HE NEVER MEANT TO CARRY OUT THE PLANS IN REAL LIFE. THE SHERIFF DISAGREES.
"It was obvious that he had put a lot of thought into this. It was obvious to us that there was more than just writing a story in a journal and it being fictitious."
OFFICIALS SAY THE EARLIEST ENTRIES IN THE JOURNAL WERE WRITTEN THREE DAYS AFTER THE MASSACRE IN SANDY HOOK, CONNECTICUT. THEY BELIEVE SHROUT LEARNED TO MAKE THE EXPLOSIVES THROUGH INTERNET RESEARCH.
"I mean it's crazy, I never thought something like that could happen at Russell County, I just thought that was something that happens everywhere else. It's crazy, you've got to worry about it still because maybe he has friends that were wanting to do it. You never know."
"Man he could have got me in school if he wanted to. He could have got the whole school, just got all of us at once if he really wanted to.

MAYOR BLOOMBERG SOT -
IF YOU JUST TOOK OUT THEFTS OF APPLE PRODUCTS, OUR TOTAL CRIME RATE WOULD BE

SENDING MESSAGES FROM HIS PHONE.USING HIS ONLINE PROFILE TROLLING FOR
DATES.
NADAV NIRENBERG SOT - HE WAS USING MY OK CUPID ACCOUNT AT LIKE 6AM TO SEND

NIRENBERG SOT - MY BEST VERSION OF TALKING AS A GIRL IS A FLIRTY GIRL I
SHOULD SAY IS ADDING WINKI FACE, EMOTICONS.
THE THIEF TOOK THE BAIT. WRITING "U WANNA MEET?"
NIRENBERG REPLIED: "YEAH, I KINDA DO."
AND WHEN THE THIEF ASKED: "WILL YOU KISS ME?"
HIS COY RESPONSE: "WELL I DON'T HAVE A BOYFRIEND."
THEY MADE A PLAN TO MEET UP AT NIRENBERG'S APARTMENT.
NIRENBERG SOT - I CONFRONT HIM RIGHT HERE. I PUT THE TWENTY DOLLARS IN HIS
HAND TO DIFFUSE THE SITUATION AS FAST AS POSSIBLE, BUT I HAD A HAMMER IN
MY HAND JUST IN CASE.
THE THIEF HANDED OVER THE PHONE, TOOK THE MONEY AND RAN -
NIRENBERG SOT - HE WAS DRESSED UP WITH A NICE JACKET AND SHIRT AND SMELLED
LIKE COLOGNE, AND HE HAD A BOTTLE OF WINE IN HIS HAND.

FOOD-BORNE ILLNESSES STRIKE ONE IN SIX AMERICANS EVERY YEAR, ACCORDING TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL.
NEARLY 130-THOUSAND OF THEM END UP IN THE HOSPITAL AND SOME THREE-THOUSAND DIE.
NEW RULES PROPOSED TODAY ARE AIMED AT CHANGING THAT.
THEY'RE BEING APPLAUDED BY FOOD SAFETY ADVOCATES.
This is a really important step toward food safety standards that would prevent contamination whether it is produced in a food factory or being produced on a farm.
THE RULES WOULD REQUIRE MANY DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN PRODUCERS OF FOOD TO BE SOLD IN THE U-S TO DEVELOP PLANS TO PREVENT THEIR FOODS FROM CAUSING FOODBORNE ILLNESS AND TO CORRECT ANY PROBLEMS THAT DO ARISE.
THE RULES ALSO SET STANDARDS FOR THE SAFE PRODUCTION AND HARVESTING OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES -- MAKING SURE WORKERS' WASH THEIR HANDS-- FOR EXAMPLE.
IT WOULD FOCUS ON HIGH RISK AREAS LIKE AGRICULTURAL WATER, EQUIPMENT AND KEEPING DOMESTICATED AND WILD ANIMALS -- OUT OF FIELDS.
What these rules are going to look at are microbial hazards. So they're looking at the pathogens that cause people to get sick when their food is contaminated. So thinks like E-coli, listeria, salmonella. Those types of food borne illnesses.
THE GOAL IS TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR PRODUCERS TO TRACK DOWN THE CAUSE OF PROBLEMS SHOULD THEY OCCUR AND HELP THE F-D-A ACT MORE QUICKLY TO SHUT THEM DOWN.
THE F-D-A SAYS THESE RULES BUILD ON EXISTING VOLUNTARY INDUSTRY GUIDELINES.
THEY WON'T BE FINAL UNTIL SOME TIME AFTER THE FOUR-MONTH PERIOD ALLOWED FOR PUBLIC COMMENT.
A big issue here - food advocates say -- is making sure the FDA has enough resources to be able to enforce these rules once they become final. That costs money - for things like inspectors. Athena Jones, CNN, Washington.
