STUDENTS FROM SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN CONNECTICUT RECENTLY RETURNED TO CLASSES IN A DIFFERENT BUILDING IN A NEIGHBORING TOWN.

SO WHAT HAPPENS NOW TO THEIR ORIGINAL SCHOOL?

STEPHANIA JIMENEZ REPORTS.

"Students and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary haven't returned to that school building down this road since that tragic shooting on December 14th. But the big question is, will Sandy Hook Elementary ever reopen?"

THAT'S UP TO NEWTOWN. ABOUT 200 RESIDENTS PACKED NEWTOWN HIGH SCHOOL TO DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY.

"The children, the students and the teachers of the school need to stay together."

"It's hard to even imagine my child walking back in the building."

MANY BELIEVE THE SCHOOL SHOULD BE REMODELED IN HONOR OF THE 26 VICTIMS.

"Not keep it as it is. I think too many hard memories but I think they should definitely rebuild it. And maybe have a memorial there."

BUT OTHERS BELIEVE THE SITE SHOULD BE TORN DOWN.

"I don't believe any kid should ever have to go back there and tie those feelings back with the school again."

"The building should be raised down."

WITH A PUBLIC SO DIVIDED, LEADERS WILL HOLD ANOTHER MEETING LIKE THIS ON FRIDAY TO HEAR WHAT OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS HAVE TO SAY. Return to index of stories...

FLU OUTBREAK-PKG

Monday morning, and tens of millions of Americans are going back to school,

going back to work, eating in crowded cafeterias and rubbing elbows with

everybody around them. It's a fine time to catch the flu -- from the person

just next to you.

SOT Dr. Granada S. Neil, Doctors Express

"Refrigerator handles, microwaves, TV remotes, light switches, door handles,

keyboards, things like that are very germy."

Add to that your ATM, or going to the post office, even pumping gas.

MOS - man

"You know I never thought about the gas pumps but you know everybody touches

it so I can imagine it would be pretty dirty."

The danger lurks everywhere. And that's pushing people into clinics from

Oregon to Boston

SOT Kris Stapp, Visiting Nurse Association

"Every day you've had a flu shot you're better protected than you were the

day before."

But not all children, whose developing immune systems make them especially

vulnerable, can get their flu shot. In New York, the governor dropped

restrictions now allowing pharmacies to vaccinate babies to teens.

Pharmacists say lack supply, lack of training and insurance issues prevent

them protecting the young.

SOT Olga Mortilla, Trying to get daughter vaccinated

"For the other children, who are not healthy, for the parents who don't have

insurance companies, who don't have primary insurance, who rely on these

pharmacies, these walk-in clinics and stuff like that. It's really sad."

And for those children who have the flu, like this boy who talked to our

Nightline crew, there's just one wish.

MOS boy

"Hopefully the doctors here can make me better."

Larry Jacobs, ABC News, New York. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

"A warm start to the week"

Yesterday's high of 84° fell a couple of degrees short of the record, which was 86° set back in 2005. Even though we didn't rewrite the record books, it was still pretty warm by January standards. Monday will be no different, as our unseasonably warm weather pattern continues with afternoon temperatures running eight to ten degrees above the average.

Early in the morning, temperatures will be at their coolest with most of us in the lower to middle 60s. Sunshine will be in control of our skies this afternoon with a few fair weather cumulus clouds scattered about as rain chances stay less than 10%. With highs forecasted to remain in the lower half of the 80s, it looks like our record of 86° set back in 1989 will remain for another year.

Not much will change as we head beyond Monday. In fact, the ridge of high pressure that has been in control of our weather over the last several days will maintain its grip over the area. It will keep us under a southeasterly wind flow, which will keep our afternoon highs in the 80s with lows in the 60s.

By the end of the week, a cold front approaching from the northwest will eventually breakdown this ridge of high pressure with a return to the upper 70s to low 80s. Forecast models are also hinting at an increase in the clouds along with a stray shower with the possibility of some cooler air filtering down the state by this time next week.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

AND NOW -- AUTO MAKERS ARE PICKING UP THE PACE -- WITH APPS AND TECHNOLOGY AIMED TO KEEP YOU CONNECTED BEHIND THE WHEEL.

APPS BEHIND THE WHEEL-PKG

SMARTPHONES DO A LOT TO GET US WHERE WE NEED TO GO - DIRECTIONS, MAYBE SOME ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE.

FOR THE MOST PART, THAT PHONE WORKS SEPARATELY FROM THE DASHBOARD. THE NEW TRENDS IN AUTOS IS TO CHANGE THAT.

"The focus of this car really showcases how consumer electronics are influencing the drive. So we're seeing for the first time, things integrated that we've never seen in a car before."

Q-N-X SOFTWARE SAYS THEY'VE CREATED A "CONNECTED COCKPIT" INSIDE THIS BENTLEY. A CURVED TOUCH SCREEN THAT CAN DISPLAY TWEETS AND EMAILS, NAVIGATION INSTRUCTIONS RIGHT BEHIND THE WHEEL, AND A WEB APP THAT LETS DRIVERS LOCK DOORS OR CHECK THE GAS TANK FROM THEIR SMARTPHONE. THE COMPANY SAYS, IT COULD BE ADAPTED TO ANY PRICE POINT.

EXPANDING DASHBOARD TECHNOLOGY IS THE GOAL OF A PROGRAM LAUNCHED BY FORD AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW -- INVITING OUTSIDE DEVELOPERS TO TAKE A CRACK AT ADDING IN-CAR APPS TO THE AUTOMAKER'S SYNC APPLINK PLATFORM.

"We know that consumers are reaching for their smartphones when their in-vehicle technology doesn't meet their needs. So we want to give them the opportunity to control their applications hands-free, and in a voice-activated way"

A KEY CHALLENGE FOR ANY CONNECTED CAR - THE ACCESS TO A NEW RANGE OF SAFETY, ENTERTAINMENT AND COMMUNICATION OPTIONS, WITHOUT CREATING TOO MANY ADDITIONAL DISTRACTIONS.

WEB CAMS AREN'T JUST FOR ADULTS ANYMORE -- NOW BABIES ARE IN ON THE TECHNOLOGY.

LITTLE BABY BAUER WAS SEEN ON THE NICVIEW WEBCAM SYSTEM.

WHEN HIGH RISK BABIES ARE BORN - THEY'RE IMMEDIATELY SENT TO THE NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT - AND NOW PARENTS, LIKE KORI AND JEFF KELLER, WILL BE ABLE TO SEE THEM FROM THEIR HOSPITAL BEDS.

"So to be able to wake up and see his chest rising and falling and my husband's hands inside the incubator being able to touch him was a sense of relief that I don't know I could put into words."

THE KELLERS WERE THE FIRST PATIENTS TO USE THE WEB CAM WHEN BABY BAUER WAS BORN - MOM SAW BAUER FOR THE FIRST TIME THROUGH NICVIEW FROM HER RECOVERY ROOM IN 2011.

THE KELLER FAMILY LOST THEIR BABY GIRL RAMSEY TWO DAYS AFTER SHE WAS BORN - AND SHE WASN'T ABLE TO MONITOR HER DAUGHTER FROM HER HOSPITAL ROOM.

"If we would have had the nic view cam, we would have seen distress.

they maybe could have told us a little bit earlier that there was distress we maybe could have been there sooner than what we were."

INDIVIDUAL CAMERAS ARE MOUNTED ABOVE THE ISOLETTES TO PROVIDE PARENTS WITH REAL-TIME VIEWING.

"It's become very apparent that parents have a real time of anxiety until they're able to connect with their baby and know what's going on."

EVEN THOSE WHO MAY BE DEPLYED ABROAD CAN KEEP REAL TIME TABS ON THEIR NEWBORNS.

"and other family members are able to see what's going on with the baby as well." Return to index of stories...

IT'S SHAPING UP TO BE A BUSY WEEK IN WASHINGTON -- GUNS. CONFIRMATIONS AND THE DEBT CEILING ALL ON THE AGENDA.

TRACIE POTTS IS LIVE ON CAPITOL HILL THIS MORNING WITH THE LATEST.

TECHNICALLY, WE ALREADY HIT THE DEBT CEILING LAST MONTH. BUT THE ADMINISTRATION PUT OFF SOME RETIREMENT AND DISABILITY PAYMENTS TO KEEP THINGS AFLOAT WHILE CONGRESS DEALS WITH THAT. AND A PUSH FOR MORE GUN CONTROL.

WITH INAUGURAL REHEARSALS UNDERWAY, THE NRA AND LAWMAKERS ARE WEIGHING IN ON WHETHER CONGRESS WILL PASS A BAN ON ASSAULT WEAPONS.

super burned in

"The likelihood is that they are not going to be able to get an assault weapons ban through this Congress."

super burned in

West Virginia:15-:21

"Stand alone ban on just gun alone will not in the political reality that we have today will not go anywhere."

VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN'S SITTING DOWN WITH CABINET MEMBERS TODAY TO FINALIZE RECOMMENDATIONS HE'LL PRESENT TOMORROW.

LIKELY AMONG THEM: UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS.

RESTRICTIONS ON HIGH-CAPACITY CLIPS

AND BARRING GUN SALES TO THE MENTALLY ILL.

ALSO AHEAD: SENATE CONFIRMATION HEARINGS. WITH DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS STILL TROUBLED BY DEFENSE NOMINEE CHUCK HAGEL'S VIEWS ON IRAN AND ISRAEL.

super burned in

Arizona:45-:48

"These are legitimate questions that need to be asked."

super burned in

"Chuck Hagel is a solid guy who speaks his mind. He is a good supporter of Israel. He has been there and the record will show that but he is not reluctant to disagree when he thinks disagreement is appropriate."

THE HOUSE IS BACK TODAY. THEY'LL SOON HAVE TO MAKE DECISIONS ON WHETHER AMERICA CAN BORROW MORE MONEY.

WE COULD HIT OUR DEBT LIMIT AS SOON AS MID-FEBRUARY. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WX WALL
