GOOD MORNING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
TODAY IS SATURDAY FEBRUARY 23RD 20-13
I'M JOE ROETZ
BEFORE WE GET TO OUR BIG STORIES OF THE DAY - LETS CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINER WITH OUR FORECAST.
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Our spring like pattern will continue through the weekend, before rain and cooler weather moves into Southwest Florida by next week.
Areas of fog will be our main concern as we get our Saturday morning started. Some of this could be dense in spots, with visibilities reduced to less than 1/4 of a mile. Once the fog lifts, we're in store for another warm and humid afternoon under partly sunny skies. High pressure located to our east will be in control of our weather sending in a southerly breeze across the area. This will bump our temperatures up into the middle 80s during the day, while keeping our humidity a bit higher. Because of this, a stray isolated shower can't be ruled out during the heat of the day.
Tonight, mostly clear skies will give way to low clouds and areas of fog as humidity stays high and temperatures bottom out in the middle to upper 60s.
We'll more than likely repeat this pattern on Sunday with a mix of sun and clouds during the afternoon with highs in the middle 80s. A cold front stretched out across the deep south will slowly make its way down the peninsula, keeping the better rain chance across parts of central Florida. A stronger front looks to sweep across the Gulf of Mexico into Tuesday with more clouds and scattered showers in the forecast through Wednesday.
Following the front will be a nice surge of cooler air. Overnight lows will be closer to normal as they settle into the middle 50s and afternoon highs climb into the middle 70s. Our days and nights will also feel more comfortable with lower humidity values.
Return to index of stories...
THE CUTS ARE GETTING CLOSER AND WARNINGS ARE MORE DIRE.
IN JUST ONE WEEK, 85-BILLION DOLLARS WILL BE STRIPPED FROM THE GOVERNMENT BUDGET UNLESS THE WHITE HOUSE AND CONGRESS CAN STRIKE A DEAL ON SPENDING.
JIM ACOSTA HAS THE DETAILS.
Return to index of stories...
SITTING DOWN WITH THE JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER, PRESIDENT OBAMA WAS ALL BUT SAYING SO LONG TO CONGRESS, WHEN IT COMES TO THOSE FORCED SPENDING CUTS THAT ARE NOW JUST ONE WEEK AWAY.
"I will keep making my case not only to Congress but to American people."
TO MAKE HIS CASE, THE PRESIDENT IS SPENDING MORE TIME GOING OVER THE HEADS OF GOP LEADERS, APPEARING ON TALK RADIO.
"So what I need listeners to do more than anything is just put a little bit of pressure on Congress as usual to get their act together and do the right thing."
THE WHITE HOUSE ALSO SENT OUT TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY RAY LAHOOD TO WARN HOW THE CUTS WILL IMPACT AIR TRAVEL:
47 THOUSAND FEDERAL AVIATION EMPLOYEES WOULD FACE FURLOUGHS.
THAT MEANS FEWER AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS IN THE TOWERS AND MORE DELAYS.
IN SMALLER COMMUNITIES, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWERS COULD BE CLOSED ALTOGETHER.
"Flights to major cities like New York, Chicago and San Francisco and others could experience delays of up to 90 minutes during peak hours"
LAHOOD SAID REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS SHOULD SEE THE MOVIE LINCOLN TO LEARN HOW TO WORK TOGETHER.
"Jim: Speaking of movie references, this might be called an acting performance because you are going to be scaring the public today? A: We'll see what the reaction of the public is, what I'm trying to do is wake up members of the Congress on the Republican side to the idea that they need to come to the table so that we don't have to have this kind of calamity in air service in America."
BUT ON TWITTER, WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY JAY CARNEY AND HIS COUNTERPART IN THE SPEAKER'S OFFICE TRADED TWEETS OVER WHO'S TO BLAME. WITH CARNEY NOTING A RECENT POLL SHOWING AMERICANS SUPPORT THE PRESIDENT'S APPROACH TO DEFICIT REDUCTION.
IT'S A SIGN ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS ARE CONFIDENT PUBLIC OPINION IS ON THEIR SIDE.
"The fact of the matter is you can't get anything done without the bill passing the House of representatives."
BUT SOME REPUBLICANS SAY HOLD ON.
SENATOR TOM COBURN FROM OKLAHOMA SENT A LETTER TO THE WHITE HOUSE ASKING WHY SOME ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS ARE SPENDING MONEY TRAVELING THE COUNTRY ADVISING COMMUNITIES ON HOW TO SECURE FEDERAL DOLLARS SAYING: "IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE AS PUBLIC OFFICIALS LEAD BY EXAMPLE."
BUT THAT WON'T STOP WASHINGTON'S LATEST GAME OF BUDGET CHICKEN. ONE THE PRESIDENT SEEMS COMFORTABLE PLAYING.
"Unlike issues like the debt ceiling the sequester going into effect will not threaten, you know, the world financial system."
Return to index of stories...
THAT WAS JIM ACOSTA REPORTING.
ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS SAID THEY ARE OPEN TO A SHORT TERM DEAL TO STAVE OFF THESE BUDGET CUTS.

YOU GO TO THE HOSPITAL - THEN YOU GET THE BILL
SOMETIMES IT CAN BE A JAWDROPPING JERK TO REALITY - RIGHT?
COMING UP WE BREAK DOWN WHAT SOME OF THOSE TESTS REALLY COST - AND HOW MUCH HOSPITALS ARE PROFITING.
Return to index of stories...
IT'S NO SURPRISE THAT THE COST OF HOSPITALIZATION CAN BE HIGH. BUT A NEW
STUDY SAYS HOSPITALS ARE CHARGING PATIENTS A LOT MORE MONEY THAN WHAT TESTS
AND PROCEDURES ACTUALLY COST.
RON CLAIBORNE HAS THE DETAILS.
Return to index of stories...
WHEN EMILIA GILBERT FELLAND WENT TO THE E-R. SHE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A
SIMPLE BROKEN NOSE. A FEW WEEKS LATER, SHE GOT THE BILL AND WAS FLOORED
AGAIN.
Gilbert Sot - "I Knew I Would Have To Pay Something But I Didn't Think It
Was Going To Be Nine Thousand Dollars."
INCLUDING: $65-HUNDRED FOR THREE C-T SCANS THAT THE GOVERNMENT SAYS SHOULD
ACTUALLY COST THE HOSPITAL ONLY ABOUT 825 DOLLARS UNDER MEDICARE RATES.
Gilbert Sot - 'the Charges Were Outrageous. "
THE TIME REPORT BY STEPHEN BRILL FOUND NON-PROFIT HOSPITALS ROUTINELY
CHARGING MANY PATIENTS FAR MORE FOR PROCEDURES AND MEDICATIONS THAN THEY
COST THE HOSPITAL
Brill Sot - " Everybody's Making Exorbitant Profits."
FOR EXAMPLE, ONE HOSPITAL CHARGED A PATIENT $157 FOR A BLOOD TEST FOR WHICH
MEDICARE PAYS JUST ELEVEN DOLLARS. THE SAME PATIENT WAS CHARGED NEARLY 8-
THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR A STRESS TEST. MEDICARE PAYS ABOUT 550.
THE AMERICAN HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION SAID A BILL REFLECTS NOT JUST THE COST
OF THE PATIENT'S TREATMENT, BUT ALSO - QUOTE -- "WHAT IT TAKES TO PROVIDE
THE CARE - THE NURSE AT THE BEDSIDE AND ALL THE STAFF WHO KEEP THE HOSPITAL
RUNNING 24 HOURS A DAY."
SO WHAT TO DO? BRILL SAYS WHAT MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW: THEY CAN USUALLY
NEGOTIATE THEIR BILLS DOWN. SO THEY DON'T PAY THE PRICE, LIKE EMILIA
GILBERT

THAT WAS RON CLAIBORNE REPORTING.
SEVERAL MEDICAL GROUPS RELEASED LISTS OF TESTS THAT PATIENTS DON'T NEED -- LIKE C-T SCANS FOR CHILDREN WITH MINOR HEAD INJURIES.
DOCTORS SAY THE SCANS EXPOSE TO CHILDREN TO RADIATION AND ARE COSTLY.
ALSO ON THE LIST -- ANNUAL PAP SMEARS FOR WOMEN AGE THIRTY TO SIXTY-FIVE.
TESTS GIVEN EVERY THREE YEARS ARE JUST AS EFFECTIVE.

STILL, THEY DO BELIEVE IT'S WORTH IT FOR EVERYONE TO GET A FLU SHOT.
