vo-pope on popemobile
A final audience - and farewell - to the faithful.
NATS - POPE
Pope Benedict the 16th's last ride in the popemobile. His last public speech
. He has held this audience every week for 8 years - but never to as big a
crowd.
NATS - ITALIAN
This church has had moments of joy and light, he says, but also difficult
moments.
The crowd arrived from all over the world. These three students from Santa
Barbara couldn't miss it.
1548
This is such a monumental time. No pope has resigned the way he has done. It
's something we have to see.
Tomorrow, Benedict will officially retire to quiet prayer and meditation.
His abdication will be captured live - by 26 Vatican cameras.
NATS - Spectators
These spectators are full of devotion. But Benedict leaves a Catholic church
deeply concerned by corruption, cronyism, and scandal.
One of his final private meetings will be with the so-called, 007 cardinals.
. who reportedly wrote about gay priests and blackmail in a confidential
dossier. And Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony is here - even though he
resigned, accused of concealing the crimes of pedophile priests.
SOT REV. JAMES MARTIN / ABC NEWS CONTRIBUTOR
I don't think it's a case where he said 01:10:32:06 'Oh my gosh, there's
all these scandals I have to resign,' I think just the weight of the job on
someone who is relatively frail and very old, just took its toll and was
time for him to go
And among the faithful, a hope that the next pope can help heal and unite.
SOT Tony Martin
2805 hopefully the person who comes in will be outspoken and bring in change
- and won't be afraid to do so

BLOOMBERG TEASE
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Yesterday's passing cool front that delivered some brief afternoon showers is in the process of stalling out over Southwest Florida, which means clouds and even a few more showers will linger through our Wednesday.
Some periods of sunshine will still be possible at times today, but clouds will likely win out over sunshine for most of us. As a result of the cloud cover, temperatures should stay out of the 80s today with most spots only warming into the mid to upper 70s for daytime highs.
Since the stalled front will be situated over southern portions of the viewing area , these are the locations that stand to see the most clouds and the greatest chance of an isolated shower. Collier and Hendry County will likely see the highest concentration of shower activity today, and shower movement will from southwest to northeast.
Winds will calm down a bit today compared to the gusty and blustery conditions we saw yesterday; look for our winds to come mainly out of the north today from 5-15 mph.
As we go through the overnight into Thursday, we should start to see partial clearing along with a slight cool down. Thursday will feature morning temps in the upper 50s along with a mix of sun and clouds through the day and highs in the mid 70s.
Temperatures will continue to take incremental steps down from Thursday through the weekend. In fact, Saturday and Sunday will be the coolest days with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. To further complicate the forecast, clouds will likely fill the sky for a good part of the weekend, and we'll even see a good chance of some scattered showers from Saturday night into Sunday as another weather system passes over from the Gulf of Mexico.
By Monday morning, temperatures will be at their lowest point of the week with lows cooling in the low 40s and upper 30s, but by Monday afternoon into Tuesday, we'll warm back up into the 70s for a couple days before our next cold front arrives by the middle of next week.

THE LUNCH TIME CROWD BEGINS TO GATHER AT MAMA'S BAKERY.
EDDIE HAIDAR HAS RUN THIS PLACE SINCE 2004. AND HE NEVER TAKES A DAY FOR GRANTED.
"Just giving good customer service, we added a few things to the menu, and just giving good customer service, making people happy, give them the best value for their dollar, makes people coming back to the restaurant."
BUT AS HARD AS EDDIE AND HIS STAFF WORK, SOMETIMES BUSINESS AT THE CASH REGISTER IS OUT OF THEIR HANDS.
"So why do we go out to eat one day and not another? look no further than the price of gas."
WHEN THE FUEL GOES UP PEOPLE CUT DOWN ON THEIR SPENDING.
RESTAURANTS ARE OFTEN THE CANARY IN THE ECONOMIC COAL MINE. WHEN TIMES ARE TOUGH, THEY FEEL IT FIRST. IT COULD BE GAS PRICES, IT COULD BE AIRLINE FEES, IT COULD CLOTHES. WHEN PRICES CLIMB. RESTAURANTS FEEL THE PINCH.
"absolutely, absolutely."
"If the price of milk goes up, if the price of eggs goes up, if the price of gas goes up, those are things that the average family has significant impact because those are daily purchases, staple items and that all of a sudden squeezes the budget for the better things."
MARKETING PROFESSOR MIRO COPIC SAYS THE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX WORKS TWO WAYS. WHEN PRICES GO UP, MERCHANTS SUFFER. WHEN IT STAYS FLAT OR GOES DOWN. WE OFTEN START SPENDING AGAIN.
"It builds confidence, and it makes you feel like, I can afford this."
BUT THE ECONOMY HAS BEEN FICKLED LATELY.

CHILDREN ESPECIALLY IN THIS DAY AND AGE TO DO FOR THEMSELVES, TO BE
INDEPENDENT, TO GET THINGS FROM THEMSELVES TO EARN ONE DAY AND ALL OF THIS
IS SAYING THE OPPOSITE.
BUT SKETCHERS IS PUTTING ITS CONSIDERABLE FOOT DOWN AND DEFENDING THE LINE--
TELLING ABC NEWS QUOTE:
"The Daddy's Money name and the collection's advertising are designed to be
fun and lighthearted, and we regret that some people have been offended by
the name. "
