THE 44-YEAR-OLD MOTHER HAD A STRONG ODOR OF ALCOHOL COMING FROM HER BREATH AND APPEARED TO BE INTOXICATED

-THEY BELIEVE THE TWO WERE LIVING IN THERE FOR AT LEAST A FEW DAYS

-I HAD A CHANCE TO SPEAK WITH FIRST RESPONDERS FROM YESTERDAY AND THEY DESCRIBED IT AS A SCENE THAT WOULD TURN ANY PARENT'S STOMACH

A LITTLE BOY SCREAMING INSIDE A STORAGE UNIT.THAT'S HOW IT ALL STARTED WEDNESDAY MORNING AT CUBE SMART ALONG AIRPORT PULLING ROAD.

DEPUTIES SAY A TENANT HEARD A CHILD IN THE UNIT - TALKING AND SCREAMING AT TIMES - BEFORE EVENTUALLY REPORTING IT TO THE GENERAL MANAGER.

WHEN THE GENERAL MANAGER APPROACHED THE UNIT - IT WAS LOCKED - BUT HE OPENED IT UP ENOUGH TO FIND A LITTLE BOY STANDING INSIDE.

THAT'S WHEN HE CALLED 9-1-1.

AT FIRST - THE BOY WAS HESITANT TO APPROACH THE GENERAL MANAGER BUT WHEN HE OFFERED WATER - THE BOY CAME RUNNING OVER.

ONCE FIRST RESPONDERS ARRIVED ON SCENE - THEY WERE ABLE TO GET INSIDE - THAT'S WHERE THEY FOUND THE CHILD'S MOTHER - 44-YEAR-OLD WENDI HORNE ORR PASSED OUT IN THE BACK OF THE STORAGE UNIT.

DEPUTIES SAY THE UNIT WAS FILLED WITH "WARM STALE AIR" AND THERE WAS A STRONG ODOR OF FECES FROM A BUCKET HORNE ORR WAS USING AS A BATHROOM.

THIS PUSH SOUNDS SURPRISING.

DURING THE RAINY MONTHS - PEOPLE FIGHT TO KEEP THE FRESH WATER AWAY FROM THIS RIVER.

NOW, ENVIRONMENTALISTS ARE BEGGING FOR LAKE OKEECHOBEE'S GATES TO BE OPEN.

WHY?

SIMPLY PUT - IT'S WHAT LURKING IN THIS WATER. THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIFE OR DEATH.

Connie Langmann, Kayak Tour Guide

3456 "The sea grasses, the oytsers beds are very important and they depend on the variation of salinity."

THE CALOOSAHATCHEE RIVER COUNTS ON A DELICATE BALANCE OF SALT AND FRESH WATER FOR LIFE.

FOR MOST OF THE DRY SEASON, THE BODY OF WATER'S BEEN CUT OFF FROM LAKE OKEECHOBEE.

THAT'S THE CONSEQUENCE OF A FLOOD CONTROL SYSTEM KNOWN AS THE HERBERT HOOVER DIKE.

ENVIRONMENTALISTS WARN WITHOUT A STEADY FLOW - SALINITY LEVELS CREEP UP AND UP.

THE HIKE THREATENS THE ESTUARY - KILLS OFF RIVER GRASSES AND LEAVES ANIMALS FIGHTING FOR FOOD.

THE CORPS BEEN DOING WHAT'S CALLED "PULSE RELEASES" TO HELP OUT.

SOME GROUPS SAY - SOUTHWEST FLORIDA DESERVES A MORE PERMANENT FIX TO THIS ONGOING WATER QUALITY FIGHT.

Jennifer Hecker, Conservancy of Southwest Florida

0639 "We're dealing with a situation, it's either feast or famine. Either we're getting too much water or too little. Since we're in the dry season, we're getting too little."

I'VE BEEN SPEAKING WITH THE ARMY CORPS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

THEY TELL ME THEY'RE IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING A FINAL DECISION.

RIGHT NOW, THEY SAY THEIR FORECAST IS MOVING AWAY FROM A DRY SEASON TO A NORMAL SEASON.

*IF THAT PANS OUT* WE CAN EXPECT TO SEE MORE WATER PUSHED OUR WAY.

STROKE RISK IN WOMEN-TCMON

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER- MORE WOMEN THAN MEN ARE LIVING WITH THE CONSEQUENCES OF HAVING A STROKE.

NOW- ABC-7 HAS LEARNED- RESEARCHERS HAVE RELEASED NEW GUIDELINES TO HELP DOCTORS TALK TO WOMEN ABOUT THE RISKS. Return to index of stories...

STROKE RISK IN WOMEN-PKG

44 YEAR OLD JENNIFER COOK IS HOSPITALIZED AT U-H CASE MEDICAL CENTER IN CLEVELAND AFTER HAVING A STROKE EARLIER THIS WEEK.

"My left arm went numb and I started slurring my speech."

HER RISK FOR STROKE ROSE 20 YEARS AGO -- WHEN SHE WAS FIRST DIAGNOSED WITH HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.

"Being aware of your blood pressure is really important."

DR. CHERYL BUSHNELL OF WAKE FOREST BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER IS THE AUTHOR OF THE FIRST EVER SET OF GUIDELINES FOR PREVENTING STROKES IN WOMEN.

SHE SAYS GETTING CONTROL OF HYPERTENSION IS KEY FOR EVERYONE.

SOME RISK FACTORS ARE SPECIFIC TO WOMEN -- LIKE SEVERE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE DURING PREGNANCY AND GESTATIONAL DIABETES.

BIRTH CONTROL PILLS CAN ALSO RAISE THE RISK -- SLIGHTLY -- AS CAN MIGRAINE HEADACHES ACCOMPANIED BY A VISUAL DISTURBANCE CALLED AN AURA. THOSE ARE FOUR TIMES MORE COMMON IN WOMEN THAN IN MEN.

"For women with migraines with aura, don't smoke, because the combination is likely to increase the risk."

JENNIFER COOK RECENTLY FOUND OUT SHE HAS ANOTHER RISK FACTOR -- TYPE II DIABETES.

THAT -- ALONG WITH HER HISTORY OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE -- INCLUDING DURING PREGNANCY -- WILL BE THE FOCUS OF DISCUSSIONS WITH HER DOCTORS MOVING FORWARD.

DOCTORS SAY LIFESTYLE CHANGES AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE IS IMPORTANT. AS WOMEN TEND TO LIVE LONGER THAN MEN. AND THEREFORE HAVE A HIGHER LIFETIME RISK FOR STROKE. Return to index of stories...
