WINTER WEATHER-PKG

In the bitter cold this morning, chainsaws are buzzing--

NATS

As hardworking crews rush to free powerlines ensnared by trees, causing

chaos, like this oak in Maryland.

When it broke the powerline it caused a small fire in the yard and the power

is off and if went completely across the road.

Millions found themselves without power in painfully cold weather.

From Oregon to New York, wind chill advisories and warnings have been posted

in 22 states today. 64% of the country blanketed in a winter nightmare.

BRIDGE:

One of the biggest dangers now, the Ice.

Here in NY, commuters are dodging black ice on sidewalks and trying to avoid

falling ice--like this-- from above.

To keep the streets safe, cities and towns have counted on salt, but in

Illinois, where most of the salt comes by barge, frozen rivers may stop

replacement supplies.

SOT- Mike Zerbonia: "/When the ice gets too thick they just start pulling

over and waiting until Mother Nature helps us out."

The ice blamed for dangerous accidents like this 30-car pileup in Michigan.

Two semis wrapped around this car, debris flung into the guardrail.

SOT - Rodney Olivas/Trucker

"I kept seeing 18 wheelers in the ditch,

Drivers everywhere urged to be cautious. 42-days of winter still loom ahead

CLOUDY AND WARM WITH A SHOWER

We start the morning with patchy dense fog. Some of that fog is likely to hang on through the mid-morning hours, especially near the coastline. After the fog, it's going to be another rather cloudy day. A cold front was approaching Southwest Florida yesterday, and is now basically stuck just to our north as a stalled front. That is the system that led us to plenty of clouds and a few showers yesterday. We can expect another round of clouds today along with a few passing showers. Winds will be from the northeast around 5-10 mph. Highs today will reach into the lower 80s. Through the night, we'll continue with mainly cloudy skies and temperatures will drop into the lower 60s for Friday morning. Friday will still be mostly cloudy, but the rain chance is be very slim. Highs will again reach into the lower 80s.

As you plan for the weekend, that same cold front that we have been talking about will finally push through Southwest Florida. It will bring some scattered showers late Saturday through early Sunday. Highs on Saturday will be in the lower 80s with plenty of humidity. Then on Sunday, we'll be just slightly cooler with highs in the lowers 70s with some warmer spots reaching into the lower 80s. Sunshine returns by Monday with highs still in the upper 70s. Return to index of stories...

THE JUVENILE COURT JUDGE SENTENCED ETHAN COUCH TO 10 YEARS PROBATION.

FIRST HE'LL GO TO A TEXAS REHABILITATION FACILITY, BUT THERE'S A CATCH.

THERE IS NO MINIMUM TIME THE 16-YEAR-OLD WILL HAVE TO SPEND IN THE TREATMENT CENTER.

COUCH WAS CONVICTED IN DECEMBER FOR A HORRIFIC DRUNK DRIVING CRASH THAT KILLED FOUR PEOPLE AND SEVERELY INJURED TWO OTHERS.

VICTIM'S FAMILIES CALL THE PUNISHMENT A TRAVESTY.

"No matter what game he or his family think they beat, the world is not ever going to take their eyes off of him. And they're going to be waiting, they're going to be waiting for him to mess up again if he does."

THE ETHAN COUCH SAGA MADE NATIONAL HEADLINES BECAUSE OF A BIZARRE DEFENSE STRATEGY. A PSYCHOLOGIST TESTIFIED COUCH WAS A PRODUCT OF SOMETHING HE CALLED "AFFLUENZA"-- A LIFESTYLE WHERE WEALTH BROUGHT PRIVILEGE AND THERE WERE NO CONSEQUENCES FOR BAD BEHAVIOR.

COUCH'S ATTORNEY BLASTED NEWS MEDIA COVERAGE OF THE CASE FOR FOCUSING ON THE "AFFLUENZA" TESTIMONY.

"I think that word might have gotten said once by a witness in passing and all the sudden that became the story. It was ridiculous to think that we walked into court and said, 'Oh, this is a rich white kid.' And she decided to probate him. It's just crazy to think that's what happened."

"Oh, really? That's ironic because its his expert that brought that before the courtroom."

PROSECUTORS SAY THERE'S NO QUESTION THE "AFFLUENZA" THEME AFFECTED COUCH'S PUNISHMENT.

"It was a stupid thing to say. It affected the credibility of that expert and it will follow that expert whereever he testifies. It was a dumb idea."

IN COURT, COUCH'S FAMILY REFUSED TO COMMENT-- VICTIMS' FAMILIES SAY COUCH AND HIS PARENTS SHOW NO REMORSE. Return to index of stories...

ACCUSED CHILD MOLESTER STILL IN CHURCH HOUSING-PKG

::TAKE PKG::

Myrna Bruno, Picking Up Granddaughters

:39:28 i am upset about it because my granddaughters go to school here

and they come out here every day and wait for someone to pick them up.

MYRNA BRUNO SAYS SHE HAD NO IDEA THE ACCUSED SEXUAL MOLESTOR SHE SAW ON THE NEWS LIVED SO CLOSE TO WHERE HER 7 AND 10 YEAR OLD GRAND DAUGHTERS PLAY EVERYDAY.

---adding another SOT here---

THIS MAN- ROBERT LITTLE, IS OUT ON BAIL AFTER ADMITTING TO SEXUALLY MOLESTING A YOUNG BOY.

LITTLE WHO IS A FORMER VOLUNTEER AT SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER CHURCH STILL LIVES ON CHURCH PROPERTY.

Myrna Bruno, Picking Up Granddaughters

:40:38 I THINK THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING BUT I DONT KNOW WHAT.

Hollie Hojek

:27:35 Were told Little lives in those beige apartment condos that are

owned by the Church- as you can see those condos are backed up to a

school playground- now I spoke with staffers today from Saint Francis

Xavier School who say all parents have been notified of the situation they

even held a staff meeting at 3 today for any employees about questions

regarding Little and the situation- but were told it's business as

usual at the school.

:26

IT APPEARS LITTLE HAS NO CONNECTION TO THE SCHOOL EXPECT THAT HE LIVES CLOSE BY.

THAT'S REASON ENOUGH FOR PARENTS.

JUDITH V TAYLOR, PARENT

:34:19

:10

I know they say innocent until proven guilty but still- its just the

circumstances behind it- those are extreme.

EAT TO LOSE-TC MON

YOU VOWED TO LOSE WEIGHT THIS YEAR?

DID YOU FALL OF THE RESOLUTION WAGON?

DON'T GIVE UP!

IF YOU STICK TO THAT GOAL YOU CAN CELEBRATE SUCCESSS.

HERE'S HOW TO GET BACK ON TRACK. Return to index of stories...

EAT TO LOSE-PKG

IF THIS YEAR'S DESIRE TO LOSE WEIGHT HAS LOST SOME STEAM, NO SWEAT, SIMPLY START AGAIN.

REASSESS YOUR EXPECTATIONS.

Your goal should be to lose one to two pounds in the first week and the same thereafter.

IF YOU FIND YOUR WEEKLY WEIGHT LOSS HAS SLOWED DOWN OR PLATEAUED YOU MANY NEED TO MAKE SOME CHANGES.

When you lose weight your calorie needs actually decrease so it might be time to cut out one snack or to change up some of your meals if you've been doing the same thing over and over again.

YOU MAY ALSO HAVE TO UP THE EXERCISE.

Maybe start lifting a few more weights, maybe extend the time that you're working out.

IF YOU DON'T EXERCISE, YOU MAY NEED TO START-- AND ENLISTING A BUDDY CAN HELP.

Find someone who can maybe workout with you or hold you accountable.

AND DON'T FORGET TO REWARD YOURSELF.

If you've been craving dance lessons or photography lessons or a new pair of shoes, this is the time to celebrate and buy those things.

AND STICK TO THE BASICS: KEEP A FOOD JOURNAL, DON'T SKIP MEALS, EAT FOODS FROM ALL OF THE FOOD GROUPS TO REDUCE TEMPTATION, AND MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES WHEN YOU EAT OUT. AND IF YOU FALTER.

Everyday is a new beginning and you have the opportunity to live a healthy life starting with your very next meal. Return to index of stories...
