WEATHER-WXWALL

Thanks to a cool front that moved through Southwest Florida last night, we've got a cooler, less humid evening on the way with temperatures quickly settling into the 60s for the first half of the night and then falling into the 50s by early Monday morning.

The cooler spots overnight will be to the north and deeper inland around Arcadia and Palmdale where temps may drop as low as the lower 50s or upper 40s. The rest of Southwest Florida will spend the early morning hours Monday in the mid to upper 50s.

We've got some great weather in the works to start the week on Monday and Tuesday. After kicking off each morning with temps in the 50s, we'll warm up nicely by the afternoon with highs in the upper 70s Monday and low 80s Tuesday. Both days will feature plenty of sun and only a few clouds.

Wednesday will be a transition day for us as the next cold front approaches Southwest Florida, bringing in some scattered rain and lots of clouds from Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

This next front should clear the area by Thursday afternoon, leaving us with some cooler weather and lower humidity for the end of the week.

Daytime highs on Thursday and Friday should only manage to reach the mid 70s while overnight lows dip down into the low 50s. Return to index of stories...

TEXTING LANGUAGE-ONCAM

YOU DO IT EVERY DAY. SOME OF US NON-STOP.

NOW A PAIR OF COLLEGE PROFESSORS IN ARIZONA SAY *TEXTING* COULD BE CHANGING OUR SOCIETY.

CHRIS WILLIAMS EXPLAINS. Return to index of stories...

TEXTING LANGUAGE-PKG

"I will shorten everything. I shorten all of my words completely because it's faster for me than to just spell everything out."

STATISTICS SHOW MOST OF US DO IT.

"I can understand my kids text but then I type in regular english the full words out."

EVEN IF WE'RE NOT HIP TO HOW THE COOL KIDS DO IT.

BUT ALL OF THAT TEXTING. BILLIONS OF MESSAGES AROUND THE WORLD EACH DAY. IS CREATING A MOMENT IN HISTORY YOU MAY MISS IF YOU HAVE YOUR NOSE PRESSED FIRMLY IN YOUR SMART PHONE.

"this is a paradigm shift because language is happening faster now,:05 change of language is happening faster now than ever and this is because of the digital of the digital world."

ALL OF THAT FINGER TAPPING. "LOLS". "BTWS". ABBREVIATIONS THAT MAKE A NOVICE STOP TO THINK. IS CREATING A REVOLUTIONARY MOMENT IN HUMAN HISTORY ACCORDING TO DON AND ALLEEN NILSEN. PROFESSORS EMERITUS AT A-S-U.

BUT TO APPRECIATE IT. YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW LANGUAGE HAS DEVELOPED.

THEY DESCRIBE IT LIKE THIS: IF HUMAN HISTORY WAS THE EQUIVALENT OF 24 HOURS. WRITTEN LANGUAGE ONLY BEGAN ABOUT 11 O'CLOCK AT NIGHT.

THOSE ANCIENT PETROGLYPHS SOME OF THE BEGINNINGS. AND SOME DAY THE NILSEN'S THINK EXPERTS WILL APPRECIATE YOUR TEXT MESSAGES OF TODAY THE WAY WE LOOK AT THOSE ANCIENT PETROGLYPHS.

"Finger speaking, it's called but they're speaking and they're communicating to people and they're learning to find the most important part."

"We're getting better at editing and we're getting better at being succinct and we're also getting better at multi tasking."

THE BEAUTY OF LANGUAGE. THEY SAY. IS THAT IT CHANGES.

AS SOCIETY. INVENTIONS AND DISCOVERIES PUSH OUR CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING. WE ADAPT WAYS TO EXPRESS OUR FEELINGS.

DON: "one of the things about texting as a language. As a foreign language. Is that it has a grammar. you can do it right and you can do it wrong"

ALLEEN: "yea"

DON: "and when we do it, we do it wrong and if anybody sees a text that we have done they know it was done by grandma and grandpa nilsen they know it's not done by a millennial because we don't know the rules the grammar of texting. we know the other kind of grammar they may not know but we don't know the grammar of texting."

ALLEEN: "yea. Like the "laugh out loud", this man sent it to his family thinking it was "lots of love" and so somebody is in the hospital and another person is getting a divorce and he sends them these big things "LOL", signs his name and discovers from his kid comes and tells him 'dad, that's laugh out loud there's nothing funny about grandpa being in the hospital' this is serious surgery"

DON: "and in fact LOL is evolving and LOL now means something quite different it's just a form of, in linguistics we call it back channeling. it's just a form of social communication saying, "i hear you" "continue" "we're on the same page" "go on with what you're saying""

SO THE NEXT TIME YOU PICK UP THAT SMARTPHONE. AND POUND OUT A QUICK TEXT. REALIZE YOU'RE DOING MORE THAN JUST "LOL-ING" THROUGH HUMAN HISTORY.

YOU ARE A REVOLUTIONARY COMMUNICATOR. Return to index of stories...
