WEATHER TEASE-WXWALL

WARMER FOR THE WEEKEND

It was a sun-filled but somewhat cool Valentine's Day across Southwest Florida, with highs only in the mid to upper 60s. If you're heading out to celebrate this evening, make sure to bring a jacket, with temps falling into the 50s. Overnight lows will not be as chilly, with temps holding in the mid 50s.

We start a slow warming trend for the weekend, with highs on Saturday climbing into the low 70s. A weak cool front will work through the area late Saturday, bringing a few clouds and a reinforcing shot of cool air. This cool air will bring lows Saturday Night down in the mid 40s, with low 40s possible inland.

Despite the cool air in the morning, the warmup will march on Sunday. Expect plenty of sun and highs climbing into the mid 70s.

The quiet and dry weather still looks to continue into next week. Sunshine will continue for President's Day, with highs in the upper 70s. More sun is likely on Tuesday, with temps back in the low 80s.

A touch more moisture will arrive midweek, bringing a few more clouds to the area. Highs by Thursday will push into the mid 80s.

It still looks like no major weather systems will affect the region over the next 7 days. Return to index of stories...

MOBILE METH LAB-BNC VOWIPE

HERE WHAT POLICE ARE TELLING ME:

THEY FOUND A ONE POT METH LAB IN A CAR PARKED IN THE NORTHWEST CAPE.

THAT MEANS THIS PERSON CAN STRATEGICALLY THROW ALL THE INGREDIENTS USED FOR METH IN ONE JAR OR POT AND IT WILL CRYSTALLIZE WITHOUT

NEEDING TO BE COOKED.

HERE'S THE GUY ARRESTED -- 32 YEAR OLD KEITH LAKIN --

POLICE FOUND HIM AFTER GETTING A CALL ABOUT A SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE.

PEOPLE IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD THOUGHT A CAR LOOKED OUT OF PLACE PARKED NEAR AN EMPTY FIELD AT NW 18TH AVENUE AND NW 27TH TERRACE

WHEN OFFICERS APPROACHED TWO PEOPLE INSIDE GOT OUT MAKING IT OBVIOUS THEY DIDN'T WANT POLICE TO SEE WHAT WAS INSIDE.

COPS FIRST NOTICED A PIPE USED TO SMOKE METH ON THE PASSENGER SEAT.

THEN THEY FOUND THE ONE POT METH LAB IN THE BACK SEAT WITH 31 OUNCES OF CHEMICALS IN THE PROCESS OF BECOMING METH.

POLICE TELL US THIS METHOD OF COOKING METH IS ON THE RISE AND IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS Return to index of stories...

EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, TWO CHILDREN TAKE PART IN A SLEEP STUDY HERE AT HASBRO CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL.

IT'S A BUSY PLACE.

"sleep deprivation is a serious problem today among adolescents and we're seeing it has significant impacts on learning, their physical health, immune function."

DR. JULIE BOERGERS SEES THE EFFECTS OF SLEEP DEPRIVATION. SHE'S CO DIRECTOR OF THE PEDIATRIC SLEEP DISORDERS CLINIC HERE. SO, SHE AND HER TEAM DECIDED TO ENLIST STUDENTS TO PROVE THAT DELAYING SCHOOL START TIME JUST A LITTLE CAN NET BIG BENEFITS.

"so we studied 197 high school students at a boarding school in New England and we looked at an experimental change in their school start times so this school changed their school start time half hour later during the winter term and we were able to study the students before and after the change in school start time."

AND WHAT SHE FOUND WAS COMPELLING.

"they were less tired during class, they were taking less naps, they were using less caffeine and they were reporting less depression."

JUST BY DELAYING THE START OF SCHOOL BY ABOUT HALF AN HOUR.

"parents often ask shouldn't they just go to bed earlier? And in fact that's a great idea but biologically very difficult because of changes in the underlying circadian rhythm throughout the course of adolescents. It's very hard for most adolescents to go to bed before eleven o'clock or so."

THE RESULTS OF THIS RESEARCH ARE PUBLISHED IN THE CURRENT ISSUE OF THE JOURNAL OF DEVELOPMENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL PEDIATRICS.

"this is just the latest study showing benefits of later school start times, it's not the first." Return to index of stories...
