NAT - Get ready, THIS is Powerball.

And *this* is where somebody cracked last night's Powerball jackpot. a

Chevron convenience store in Silicon Valley California.

SOT/Sonia Mahal, store manager - I was so excited, and we're waiting for the

winner to come in.

That winner -- or winners -- will claim a cool $425 million dollars. the

6th largest US lottery jackpot. the largest ever won in California.

SOT/Presser - tba

The winner beat incredible odds -- the ONE in 175 million to match all 6

numbers.

On paper, the ticket is worth 242 million in lump sum cash. but after

taxes, you'd be left with just 145 million.

SOT/Jimmy Kimmel - Did you know that by law all Powerball lottery winners

are required to buy a Jetski?

Financial experts say many do -- along with other expensive toys and

property. 70 percent spend all their winnings in the first couple of years.

SOT/Gary Schatsky, financial adviser, ObjectiveAdvice.com - one of the

biggest pitfalls is overspending. they're trying to live out every dream

that they've surpressed their entire life.

But first, the new jackpot winner has to claim the prize. They have up to a

year to come forward, but under state law can't remain anonymous forever.

Meanwhile, last night's drawing minted 19 other new millionaires. Including

a two million dollar winner near Houston. And that Chevron store owner who

gets a 1 million dollar reward.

SOT/Owner - tba

CLOSE 1: The powerball jackpot now goes down to a mere 40 million dollars.

But if you're looking for big money have no fear -- tomorow's Mega Millions

drawing is worth 172 million. Devin Dwyer, ABC News, NY. Return to index of stories...

17-YEAR-OLD CHRISTOPHER ROUPE WAS IN THE ROTC AT WOODLAND HIGH SCHOOL AND WANTED TO JOIN THE MARINES. HIS FRIENDS SAID HE LOOKED AFTER THEM.

He was a good kid. He always hung out with me and he took up for me.

ROUPE'S YOUNG LIFE ENDED FRIDAY NIGHT WHEN EUHARLEE POLICE OFFICERS SHOWED UP AT THE DOOR OF HIS HOME IN THE EAGLE VIEW MOBILE HOME PARK TO SERVE A PROBATION VIOLATION WARRANT FOR HIS FATHER.

A FEMALE POLICE OFFICER TOLD G-B-I INVESTIGATORS THAT CHRISTOPHER ROUPE POINTED A GUN AT HER WHEN HE OPENED THE DOOR.

It just doesn't add up.

AN ATTORNEY REPRESENTING THE ROUPES SAYS THAT'S NOT WHAT THE FAMILY SAYS HAPPENED.

We don't know where that statement came from.

COLE LAW SAYS CHRISTOPHER ROUPE WAS ABOUT TO WATCH A MOVIE.

The eyewitnesses on the scene clearly state that he had a Wii controller in his hand. He heard a knock at the door. He asked who it was, there was no response. So, he opened the door and immediately upon opening the door was shot in the chest.

NEIGHBORS RAN TO THE HOME AFTER THEY HEARD THE SHOT.

When we got up there, they said there was a Wii remote in his hand, and she shot him.

This is tragic.

NEIGHBOR KEN YATES SAYS HE SAW THE FEMALE OFFICER MOMENTS AFTER THE FATAL SHOT.

She came out of this house. She put her head in her hands, and she was sobbing. But supposedly, he opened the door with a BB gun, and in my opinion, what I think, I think he was playing a game with his neighborhood buddies. Return to index of stories...

RAIN CHANCES RETURN

Our stretch of great weather continued into Thursday, with a blend of sun & clouds and highs in the 80s. Expect a mild and humid evening, with temps only falling into the 70s. Patchy fog may once again develop overnight, with lows in the mid 60s

Changes are ahead as we enter Friday. A cool front will plow into North Florida. The front doesn't make it into our area, but it will transport more moisture into the region. The result will be a lot more cloud cover and scattered rain chances. The best chance for rain will be in the afternoon areas east of I-75. Highs on Friday will be in the low 80s.

The increased moisture stays in place for Saturday. We'll keep partly sunny skies to a blend of sun & clouds. Again, a few scattered showers will be possible inland. Highs on Saturday will climb into the mid 80s.

Sunday features more sunshine and lower rain chances. Expect partly cloudy conditions to close the weekend, with just an isolated rain chance. Highs will again be in the mid 80s.

Next week still looks fairly warm with a chance of showers. Monday and Tuesday are still expected to feature partly cloudy skies with isolated rain showers possible. Expect highs both days in the low 80s.

Rain chances will increase midweek as the frontal boundary finally begins to push into Southwest Florida. We'll close out next week with temps in the upper 70s to low 80s.

Return to index of stories...
