WEATHER TEASE-WXWALL

"Warm again, with late week rain"

We kicked the new week off on a very warm note as daytime highs reached the lower to middle 80s in many spots with lots of humidity. Not much change will happen in the short term, but we are going to track increasing rain prospects by mid to late week along with a slight cool down.

Once the low clouds and fog lift, we'll be treated to a mix of sun and clouds throughout the afternoon. Just like yesterday, the urban corridor is expected to stay mainly dry, while a few showers pop during the heat of the day across our interior zones. Daytime highs will range from 80° along the coast to the middle 80s elsewhere.

A few clouds will linger across the region tonight with the possibility of a patch or two of fog to develop. Temperatures will also be slightly cooler as they settle into the lower to middle 60s by tomorrow morning.

By midweek, we'll be tracking another weather system due in from the north and west. This will increase our clouds on Wednesday with widely scattered showers overnight through the Thursday time frame. Daytime highs will return to seasonal averages as they top out in the middle to upper 70s, while overnight lows dip into the middle to upper 50s. Clouds will be slow to clear on Friday with more sunshine during the afternoon. The weekend is looking very nice with lots of sunshine with temperatures warming into the lower 80s, while humidity levels stay rather comfortable. Return to index of stories...

GROCERY SHOPPING FOR JASMINE FORTE'S FAMILY OF FIVE ISN'T CHEAP.

AVERAGING $200 EACH WEEK, SHE CUTS COUPONS AND BOUNCES BETWEEN STORES.

SOT: "Meat was on sale today which is why I bought it."

AND IT'S LIKELY TO ONLY GET MORE EXPENSIVE FOR HER AND FAMILIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

THE CALIFORNIA DROUGHT IS ONE VERY BIG REASON, AS FARMERS AND RANCHERS LOSE THEIR HARVESTS AND SELL OFF THEIR LIVESTOCK.

Mark Thompson/Fresno County Cattleman's Assn: "It means that probably you're gonna be paying more for that steak when you go to the supermarket or for that hamburger when you go to the drive-in."

IT'S ALREADY HAVING AN EFFECT ON THE PRICE YOU PAY:

GROUND BEEF HAS RISEN FROM $3.38 A POUND IN OCTOBER TO $3.46 AT THE END OF JANUARY.AND COULD HIT $4.00 A POUND THIS YEAR.

MILK PRICES ALSO UP.13-cents a GALLON SINCE SEPTEMBER AND EXPECTED TO KEEP RISING.

ALSO TO BLAME.DEMAND FOR CHEESE IS EXPLODING OVERSEAS.

MEANWHILE, OATS, THE MAIN INGREDIENT IN CEREALS IS UP NEARLY 20% THIS YEAR!

ALL OF IT FORCING JASMINE FORTE INTO SOME GROCERY AISLE STRATEGIZING:

Jasmine Forte/California Shopper: "I make my list. I go with an agenda. I know what I'm going to get. But once I arrive at the market, I see these jumps. I have to rethink my list."

Tom Costello/NBC News/Washington: "Economists say 2014 could be a year for higher food prices across the board: fruits, vegetables, poultry and pork included."

Sharon Stark/Economist/Strategist: "The typical American is going to see a five to ten dollar increase in their grocery bill when they check out. Everything in that basket is going to come at a higher price."

ADDING INSULT TO INJURY, A DROUGHT IN BRAZIL IS SENDING COFFEE PRICES SOARING!

UP 35% SINCE NOVEMBER.

FOR MANY, THAT'S JUST TOO MUCH:

Jasmine Forte/California Shopper: "I will cut corners. I will budget. I will clip coupons if I have to, but there will be coffee in this house at all times. There's no way I can cut the coffee!" Return to index of stories...

OBESITY RATES STILL HIGH-TCMON

FOR MORE THAN A DECADE - THE COUNTRY'S TOP HEALTH AGENCIES AND EXPERTS HAVE BATTLED RISING OBESITY RATES IN THE U-S.

THEY'VE DONE ALMOST EVERTHING TO TRY AND GET ADULTS AND CHILDREN TO EAT LESS AND EXERCISE MORE.

TONIGHT - A SURPRISING NEW REPORT SHOWS LITTLE CHANGE.

WE FOUND OUT WHY. Return to index of stories...

OBESITY RATES STILL HIGH-PKG

ANTI-OBESITY CAMPAIGNS -- AN EFFORT BY THE FIRST LADY -- PUBLIC SERVICE

ANNOUNCEMENTS TO EXERCISE MORE AND EAT HEALTHIER.

HALLMARKS OF AN EFFORT TO CURB AMERICANS' DANGEROUSLY EXPANDING WAISTLINES.

BUT NEW EVIDENCE SUGGESTS ALL THESE EFFORTS HAVE FAILED TO MOVE THE NEEDLE

OVER THE PAST DECADE.

CDC RESEARCHERS EXAMINED THE HEIGHT AND WEIGHT OF MORE THAN 9,000 PEOPLE.

THEY FOUND 32 PERCENT OF KIDS AND TEENS WERE ABOVE A HEALTHY WEIGHT AND 17

PERCENT WERE OBESE.

IN ADULTS, THE NUMBERS WERE EVEN WORSE WITH MORE THAN 68 PERCENT OF ADULTS

OVERWEIGHT MORE THAN A THIRD OBESE AND MORE THAN 1 IN 16 EXTREMELY OBESE.

MOST DISCOURAGING? THE FINDING THAT THESE NUMBERS ARE PRETTY MUCH WHAT THEY

WERE IN 2003.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT WE KNOW WHAT IT TAKES FOR ALL OF US TO BE AT A

HEALTHIER WEIGHT. MORE EXERCISE. FEWER CALORIES. IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.

BUT WHEN IT COMES TO DOING THIS, TOO MANY OF US ARE FALLING SHORT. LUCKILY,

THE BATTLE TO FIGHT OBESITY IS NOT OVER YET. Return to index of stories...
