IN ABC-7'S HEALTHY LIVING- BIG CHANGES COMING TO THE FOOD YOU EAT.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 20 YEARS, THE FDA IS CHANGING THOSE NUTRITION LABELS ON THE BACK OF

EVERYTHING YOU BUY AT THE GROCERY STORE. Return to index of stories...

FOOD LABEL CHANGES-PKG

NEW FOOD LABELS ARE EXPECTED TO MAKE CALORIES BIGGER AND EASIER TO READ.

THEY MAY DROP SOME NUTRIENTS AND ADD OTHERS -- LIKE TRANS FATS. AND THE PERCENTAGE OF WHOLE-WHEAT.

AND USE MEASUREMENTS THAT ARE EASIER FOR CONSUMERS TO UNDERSTAND - TEASPOONS INSTEAD OF GRAMS.

THE CHANGES COME AS A RECENT GOVERNMENT SURVEY SHOWS 42 PERCENT OF WORKING ADULTS AND MORE THAN HALF OF OLDER ONES READ NUTRITION LABELS.

"They're scrutinizing labels; they're asking questions; they're changing what they feed their families."

THE NEW LABELS ARE EXPECTED TO USE MORE REALISTIC SERVING SIZES - WHAT WE REALLY EAT:

"Some of the serving sizes are a joke. A two ounce bagel or two ounce muffin - when was the last time anybody saw one of those? So companies pretend that a four ounce muffin is two servings. And so all the numbers are divided in half - half as much sugar, half as much fat half as many calories. So the FDA is trying to update that."

HEALTH ADVOCATES WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO LIST "ADDED SUGARS." THAT'S CONTROVERSIAL. SOME "ADDED" SUGARS ARE NATURAL.

IN A STATEMENT, THE GROCERY MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION IS URGING THE GOVERNMENT TO CONSIDER THE "MOST CURRENT, RELIABLE SCIENCE".

AND MAKE SURE THE NEW LABELS AREN'T CONFUSING. Return to index of stories...
