SO HOW DO YOU GET TO CARNEGIE HALL?

PRACTICE.

PRACTICE.

PRACTICE.

JAMES MATTHEWS SPENDS UP TO TEN HOURS A DAY SITTING BEFORE A GRAND PIANO ECHOING THE SOUNDS OF BEETHOVEN.

SINCE HE WAS THREE-YEARS-OLD, JAMES HAS KEPT A PIANO WITHIN ARM'S REACH.

HIS MUSIC HAS GOTTEN HIM THROUGH THE GOOD TIMES IN LIFE AND THE BAD.

"I ended up sleeping wherever I could to sleep for a good part over a year and a half."

AFTER GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL, JAMES WAS HOMELESS.

HIS PARENTS WERE OUT OF THE PICTURE.

LUCKILY, THE PIANO STUDIO AT FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE IN LAKELAND WAS OPEN 24 HOURS.

THAT'S HOW HIS TEACHER LEARNED OF HIS SITUATION AND STEPPED IN TO HELP.

"He had found me sleeping in his studio and pretty much got me out of that situation. He found me a different school to go to where I had a dorm and a roof over my head."

JAMES CONTINUED PERFECTING HIS CRAFT AT U-W-F.

EVENTUALLY, HE DECIDED TO TAKE HIS TALENTS TO THE BIG STAGE: CARNEGIE HALL IN NEW YORK CITY.

HE ENTERED THE AMERICAN PROTÉGÉ INTERNATIONAL PIANO AND STRINGS COMPETITION AND, SURE ENOUGH, JAMES WAS SELECTED AS AN HONORABLE MENTION WINNER.

"It's a dream come true. I, in a million years, thought I would never see myself going on that stage, and it just means the world to me."

A SOLID PERFORMANCE COULD SPRINGBOARD HIS MUSIC CAREER TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

MUSICIANS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD WILL STUDY HIS EVERY NOTE, CHORD, AND KEY STROKE, BUT JAMES HAS OVERCOME CHALLENGES BEFORE AND CARNEGIE HALL WILL BE NO DIFFERENT.

"I really don't know what's going to happen with it or anything, but I'm just going to go and show my best and stay focused." Return to index of stories...

AND NOW THE REASON FOR CAPE CORAL RESIDENT JUDY ROSS'S FEAR.

"I'm getting a little bit afraid of the large ones like this one that

must five, they're measured from head to tail, he must be five feet

long." Ross

BUT IT'S NOT JUST SIZE OF THESE IGUANA'S THAT HAS HER WORRIED

ROSS'S ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT THE DAMAGE THEY MIGHT CAUSE HER HOME.

"They dig the dirt next to the sea wall and therefore it erodes it, I

behind it."

ROSS SAYS THE IGUANA'S HAVE BECOME A GROWING PROBLEM IN THIS SOUTHEAST CAPE

SHE'S SAYS SHE'S TRIED A NUMBER OF TACTICS TO SCARE THEM OFF FOR GOOD.

"The garbage can doesn't work anymore I know have a frond, I had a

THAN ANYTHING ELSE.

issue unless somebody falls in the hole." Return to index of stories...

NICE AND WARM WEEK AHEAD

Quiet weather returns for several days this week. The forecast tonight calls for partly cloudy skies becoming mostly clear by the morning. Temperatures will drop through the 60's this evening and land in the mid and upper 50's along the coast with mid and lower 50's inland. No rain tonight.

Tomorrow's weather looks mainly sunny and warm. Highs on Tuesday should get to the lower 80s' and skies will feature a few passing clouds during the day. Again tomorrow, no rain is expected.

The extended outlook calls for more warm and quiet weather through the end of the week. The daytime highs should be in the mid 80's each day and overnight lows will be in the mid 60's. A trend toward cloudier skies will be noted this coming weekend, but rain chances stay pretty low through Sunday. The long-range outlook calls for rain next Monday. Return to index of stories...

CARB -- A FOUR-LETTER WORD FOR DIETERS.

CUPCAKES, CAKE, PASTA, BREAD - ALL CARBS WE KNOW AND LOVE.

BUT NEW RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT PERHAPS WE WON'T PACK ON THE POUNDS AS MUCH AS WE THINK.

WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE TO WORRY MAY BE WRITTEN IN YOUR DNA.

LOOKING AT OVER SIX THOUSAND PEOPLE AROUND THE GLOBE - SWEDISH SCIENTISTS FOUND A GENE THAT MIGHT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE.

THIS GENE MAKES AN ENZYME THAT BREAKS DOWN CARBS.

PEOPLE WITH FEWER COPIES OF THIS GENE HAD A HARDER TIME BREAKING DOWN THOSE STARCHY FOODS AND WERE EIGHT TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BE OBESE THAN PEOPLE WHO HAD THE MOST COPIES OF THE GENE.

SINCE YOU CAN'T CHANGE GENES - AND YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHICH GENETIC GROUP YOU'RE IN - THIS WON'T CHANGE YOUR DIET TOMORROW.

BUT IT MAY HOLD THE KEY TO A NEW WAY TO PREVENT AND TREAT OBESITY - ONE THAT COULD ALLOW US ALL TO HAVE OUR CAKE - AND EAT IT TOO. Return to index of stories...
