FIRST WEATHER-PWC

We've seen a string of nice and sunny days across Southwest Florida, and not much change will take place as we head into the weekend. It's not until early next week, when we start to track our next chance for rain and storms.

Our morning will start off mild with temperatures in the middle to upper 60s. Since we have a touch more humidity out there, a few areas of patchy fog may develop through sunrise. Plan on a mostly to partly sunny day, with a few high clouds drifting overhead from time to time. Expect daytime highs to warm into the middle 80s, with slightly cooler readings along the coast with an onshore wind developing through the afternoon.

Tonight, expect mainly clear skies and temperatures in the middle to upper 60s. Patchy fog will also be possible once again by tomorrow morning.

Strong high pressure anchored to our east will remain in control of our weather through Sunday. Mostly to partly sunny skies will remain in the forecast with highs topping out in the middle to upper 80s. By Monday, clouds will begin to increase across the area as another storm system approaches the area by Tuesday. This will bring the threat for showers and the potential for strong storms to the area through the day. We'll see a nice drop in our humidity levels by mid week, with slightly cooler temperatures. MAIN WEATHER-WXWALL

Return to index of stories...

SENIOR SLEEP DISORDER-POP

10 TO 15 PERCENT OF PEOPLE AGED 65 AND OLDER CRAVE SLEEP TOO EARLY IN THE EVENING AND FIND THEMSELVES AWAKE, WELL BEFORE THE BIRDS BEGIN CHIRPING.

IT'S CALLED 'EARLY AWAKENING INSOMNIA' AND IT GETS IN THE WAY OF HAVING A SOCIAL LIFE.

NOW, A STUDY USING BLUE LIGHT TREATMENT AIMS TO HELP.

BENITA ZAHN HAS THE STORY. Return to index of stories...

SENIOR SLEEP DISORDER-PKG

YOU MIGHT THINK THESE GOGGLES WITH THEIR BLINKING BLUE LIGHT WOULD BE ANNOYING, BUT GRAD STUDENT, ERIN RYAN SAYS, IT'S LIKE A RELAXING DAY AT THE BEACH.

"It was kind of nice like laying on the beach with some warm sun in your face when it was on."

AND I CAN ATTEST THAT THEY'RE COMFY. WHICH IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE THESE GOGGLES ARE GEARED TO HELP YOU CATCH YOUR ZZZ'S.

THE DEVICE IS GEARED FOR SENIORS WHOSE SLEEP HAS BECOME DISORDERED. THEY FALL ASLEEP TOO EARLY, LIKE 7 PM - AND FIND THEMSELVES AWAKE AT 3 AM.

WHY THIS HAPPENS IS THREE FOLD - AGING, AN INABILITY FOR THE BODY TO EFFECTIVELY ABSORB LIGHT, AND NOT SPENDING ENOUGH TIME OUT OF DOORS.

TAKEN TOGETHER AND YOU HAVE A SHORTAGE OF EXPOSURE TO BLUE LIGHT DURING THE DAY.

"If you want to delay your bedtime you need this type of light in the evening hours."

AS SHE SLEEP RESEARCHER MARIANA FIGUERIO EXPLAINS, NOT ENOUGH BLUE LIGHT AFFECTS MELATONIN LEVELS - MELATONIN HELP US FALL ASLEEP. SO THAT'S THE COLOR LIGHT DELIVERED BY THESE GOGGLES.

"This fools the brain, it depends on the timing you get it, stretching daytime a little bit longer in the evening."

STUDY PARTICIPANTS SIGN ON FOR 6 WEEKS.

"So we're giving people enough light that it will go through your eyelid and then it will have an effect on the melatonin level. And that flashes every 30 seconds and you're gonna wear it about 2 to 3 hours every night."

SALIVA WILL BE TESTED FOR MELATONIN LEVELS DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF TREATMENT AND THE TWO WEEKS OFF TREATMENT.

WHEN THE CYCLE'S REPEATED THE LIGHT WILL FLASH RED - RED LIGHT HELPS WITH ANOTHER CHEMICAL, CORTISOL - WHICH HELPS US TRANSITION FROM SLEEP TO WAKEFULNESS IN THE MORNING HOURS.

"So what we're very interesting in doing. How you get all the different biomarkers to do the right thing at the right time."

ALL WITHOUT THE NEED FOR TAKING MEDICATION. FIGUERIO BELIEVES ONE TREATMENT SHOULD RESET YOUR INTERNAL CLOCK.

HER RESEARCH, SHE HOPES, WILL CONFIRM THAT. FOLLOW UP STUDIES WILL LOOK AT HOW TO MAINTAIN THAT GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP. Return to index of stories...
