FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

We've seen a string of warm sunny days across Southwest Florida, and not much change will take place as we head into Sunday. It's not until early in the week, when we start to track our next chance for rain and storms.

Our morning will start off mild with temperatures in the middle to upper 60s. Since we have a touch more humidity out there, a few areas of patchy fog may develop through sunrise mainly east of the interstate. Through the day we'll see a mix of sun and clouds, but overall a mainly dry day is on tap with warm temperatures. Expect daytime highs to warm into the middle 80s, with slightly cooler readings along the coast.

Tonight, expect some clouds to hang around and temperatures upper 60s.

By Monday, clouds will begin to increase across the area as another storm system approaches the area by Tuesday. This will bring the threat for showers and a few strong storms to the area through the day. We'll see a nice drop on our humidity levels by mid week, with slightly cooler temperatures. MAIN WEATHER

"it's a lovely beach."

IT'S JUST THE BEGINNING OF THE BEACH WEATHER SEASON AND ON NEW SMYRNA BEACH THERE ARE ALREADY WARNING SIGNS POSTED ABOUT THE LURKING DANGER.

Thomas Wand/Visitor

"I was with a friend in the water and we saw a wave and we saw a shark in the waters. We kind of just looked at each other and immediately got out of the water."

ON FRIDAY TWO TEEN SURFERS WERE BITTEN BY SHARKS JUST SOUTH OF THE JETTY.

THE ATTACKS HAPPENED JUST 30 MINUTES APART.

-nats of water-

THE FIRST TEEN-FROM SOUTH CAROLINA WAS SITTING ON HIS BOARD WHEN HE FELT SOMETHING SHARP NIPPING AT HIS FOOT.

THE OTHER IS FROM SATELLITE BEACH. HE HAD JUST PADDLED OUT WHEN HE WAS BITTEN ON THE LEG.

THEY BOTH SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES.

Zack Terwilliger/Surfer

"most of these guys out here are just ankle bitters they are nothing really to worry about."

ZACK TERWILLIGER GREW UP HERE AND IS USED TO SHARING THE WATER WITH SHARKS---BUT SOME VISITORS ARE NOT.

Julie Wand/Visitor

"I always have reservations about going in."

FLORIDA HAS A REPUTATION FOR BEING SHARK ATTACK CAPITOL OF THE WORLD.

IT'S A QUESTION ABC7 IS TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS MORNING --

PATERNATY LEAVE-POP

THERE'S A HEATED NATIONAL DEBATE ABOUT PATERNITY LEAVE - AND WHETHER NEW FATHERS GET ENOUGH OF IT.

IT ALL STARTED WHEN A RADIO HOST CRITICIZED A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE THIS WEEK FOR TAKING A COUPLE OF DAYS OFF.

CRAIG MELVIN, A NEW FATHER HIMSELF, HAS THE STORY. Return to index of stories...

PATERNATY LEAVE-PKG

METS SECOND BASEMAN DAVID MURPHY MAY BE USED TO BEING CRITICIZED FOR HIS PLAY ON THE FIELD.

nat

BUT THIS WEEK, SPORTS RADIO SKEWERED HIM FOR MISSING THE FIRST TWO GAMES OF THE SEASON FOR HIS SON'S BIRTH.

SOT CARLTON: You get your back to your team and you play baseball. That's my take on it.

SOT BOOMER: I would have said c-section before the season starts, I need to be at opening day. I'm sorry, but that's what makes our money…

THE BACKLASH WAS IMMEDIATE.

AND THE CONTROVERSY STARTED A NATIONAL CONVERSATION.

DAD MOS: There are certain moments in your life you don't get back. why would you consider missing it?

MOM MOS: I'd be furious. You're half the creator, you have to be there!

ESIASON HAS SINCE APOLOGIZED.

BUT WHILE THERE may be a CULTURAL SHIFT IN THE WAY AMERICANS VIEW PATERNITY LEAVE, THE LAW HASn't caught up yet.

GFX: CURRENTLY *62* COUNTRIES have laws REQUIRing PAID PATERNITY -- RUSSIA, RWANDA AND CAMBODIA AMONG THEM. *NOT* ON THE LIST? THE U.S.

GFX: HERE, "THE FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE ACT" GUARANTEES FATHERS UP TO 12 WEEKS OF *UNPAID LEAVE, but ONLY ABOUT 14% OF COMPANIES OFFER *PAID* LEAVE.

MINE IS ONE OF THEM SO WHEN MY SON WAS BORN LAST MONTH, I TOOK TWO WEEKS OF PAID PATERNITY LEAVE, AND I WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING. IT WASN'T NEARLY ENOUGH TIME TO BOND WITH DEL.

family nat

BUT EVEN WHEN IT *IS* AVAILABLE, EXPERTS SAY MANY MEN ARE RELUCTANT TO TAKE ANY TIME OFF.

CRAIG MELVIN: Why aren't more men taking advantage of this?

AMANDA AUGUSTINE 010625: I think that there's still concern that they're going to end up damaging their professional reputation. Whether they'll be passed over for a promotion or they wont get an opportunity to advance their careers/

ANOTHER CONCERN? MANY MEN CAN'T AFFORD TO MISS PAYCHECKS.

COMPANIES like BANK OF AMERICA, FACEBOOK AND YAHOO OFFER GENEROUS PATERNITY LEAVE, BUT IT WILL LIKELY BE A WHILE BEFORE PAID LEAVE FOR NEW DADS BECOMES THE NORM. Return to index of stories...
