"Dry today, with rain on the way"

It was a pretty nice weekend filled with sunshine and very warm weather. Temperatures will remain warm in the short term, before a cold front brings rain and a few storms followed by a brief cool down.

This morning starts off mild and somewhat muggy with temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Mostly sunny skies will get the day going, with partly sunny conditions through the afternoon. Daytime highs will climb into the middle to upper 80s, along with a breezy wind from the south and southwest.

Tonight, clouds will be on the increase ahead of our next storm system and there may even be a stray shower washing in from the Gulf of Mexico overnight. Humidity levels will stay high, keeping our nighttime temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s area wide.

A cold font will be crossing the peninsula on Tuesday, bringing us a threat for rain and a few storms by late morning through the afternoon hours. At this time, the severe weather risk looks low, however some of the storms that push through could produce some heavier downpours and gusty winds. Once the rain fades and the front pushes south, breezy northerly winds will usher in a cooler and drier airmass. This cool down will be brief, as we'll spend two nights in the 50s, with daytime highs rebounding quickly back into the 80s by Thursday. Return to index of stories...

MALAYSIAN MISSING PLANE-VO IN POP

NEW INFORMATION THIS MORNING IN THE SEARCH FOR THAT MISSING MALAYSIAN PLANE.

INVESTIGATORS SAY NEW UNDERWATER "PINGING" SOUNDS HEARD BY THE AUSTRALIAN NAVY WITHIN THE LAST 24 HOURS ARE "VERY ENCOURAGING" AND "THE

MOST PROMISING LEAD SO FAR."

BUT THEY WARNED OVERNIGHT THAT IT MAY TAKE A COUPLE OF DAYS TO CONFIRM WHETHER THEY ARE INDEED FROM THE BLACK BOXES ABOARD FLIGHT 370.

ABC'S TAHMAN BRADLEY HAS THE LATEST. Return to index of stories...

MALAYSIAN MISSING PLANE-PKG

PKG SCRIPT:

They are the most promising clues so far -- underwater sounds that could be

pings from Flight 370's black boxes.

Deep in the Indian Ocean, a high-tech Australian ship picked up two signals.

SOT Angus Houston, Head of the Joint Agency Coordination Ctr

"IT COULD TAKE SOME DAYS BEFORE THE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE, TO ESTABLISH

WHETHER THESE DETECTIONS CAN BE CONFIRMED AS BEING FROM MH-370. IN VERY DEEP

OCEANIC WATER, NOTHING HAPPENS FAST."

Meanwhile, about 350 miles away from the sounds detected by the Australian

ship, Chinese Navy vessel picked up sounds using a hand-held device like

this.

But experts say it's unlikely this equipment would be able to hear the black

box beacons in such deep water.

Nevertheless, a British Navy ship with sophisticated detection devices was

dispatched to investigate.

SOT John Nance

"THIS IS A VERY SOPHISTICATED SHIP. / IF THEY HEAR ANYTHING, THEY WILL BE

ABLE TO SEND DOWN A DRONE FOR INSTANCE / AND WITH HYDROPHONES AND OTHER

THINGS, THEY'LL BE ABLE TO GET TO THE SOURCE OF WHATEVER THAT NOISE IS."

The multinational search has moved south. A new look at satellite data

show the 777 may have been flying faster that initially thought. possibly

going down close to where the Chinese picked up those signals.

It's a race against time. The pingers on the black boxes could go silent any

minute. Their battery life is close to running out.

SOT Tony Abbott, Australian PM

"THIS IS THE MOST DIFFICULT SEARCH IN HUMAN HISTORY."

The signals are being detected about 2.8 miles deep. In the late 1980s a

South African flight was recovered at that depth. But it took *two years* to

find the cockpit voice recorder.

SMARTPHONES AND YOUR CHILDREN-TRX, VOTOPS

PUT THE PHONE DOWN!

WE FOUND A NEW STUDY THAT SHOWS ADULTS PAY MORE ATTENTION TO THEIR SMARTPHONES THAN THEIR CHILDREN DURING FAMILY TIME -- ESPECIALLY OUT AT RESTAURANTS.

RESEARCHERS FROM BOSTON UNIVERSITY FOUND THE MAJORITY OF PARENTS USE THEIR DEVICE WHILE EATING -- NOT PAYING ANY ATTENTION TO THEIR CHILDREN.

A new study finds that adults pay more attention to their smart phone than their children during restaurant outings.

And adults tend to react harshly - and in some cases, physically - to the children who interrupt their screen time.

Researchers from Boston University spent time watching 55 adults at a fast-food restaurant. Each of the adults was with one or more young children.

Forty of the adults used a smart phone during the meal. Sixteen used the device the entire time while they ate with the children. They put the smart phone down only briefly.

Ignoring your children

"Many of these caregivers were looking at their handheld devices while they were eating and not paying attention to their children," says board-certified pediatrician Elaine Schulte, MD, MPH, of Cleveland Clinic Children's.

Many children appeared to test limits or exhibit provocative behaviors during the time their caregiver concentrated on the smart phone.

The caregivers buried in their devices frequently ignored the child's behavior for a while and then reacted harshly when the children misbehaved.

The caregivers would respond with a scolding tone of voice, gave repeated instructions in a somewhat robotic voice, seemed insensitive to the children's needs or responded physically - like giving a kick under the table.

A cautionary tale

The results are a cautionary tale for all parents about mobile device use, Dr. Schulte says.

Mobile devices can distract parents from face-to-face interactions with their children, she says. These face-to-face interactions are crucial for cognitive, language and emotional development.

"Children really need that interaction," Dr. Schulte says. "The best thing for developing minds is to build that relationship where the parent is looking at the child, where the child is looking at the parent, they're engaging in conversation."

Handheld devices, with their instant access to videos and games, have the potential danger to replace enriching parent and child activities, the study says. Some parents also tend to use mobile devices as a "pacifier" to control child behavior.

Put down the phone and talk

Mealtimes are a time for parents and children to relax and talk, Dr. Schulte says.

"It's not a time to withdraw, close-in, and do your own thing," she says.

Use of mobile device is a complex set of behaviors, and its potential positive and negative effects on interaction between parent and child remain unexplored, the study says. Return to index of stories...
