MISSING PLANE ONE MONTH-TC

ONE MONTH AGO -- MALAYSIAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 370 VANISHED.

THIS MORNING -- SEARCH CREWS ARE WORKING TIRELESSLY TO TRACK DOWN WRECKAGE FROM THAT PLANE.

THERE'S A NEW GAME PLAN TODAY -- USING MORE SHIPS AND PLANES TO COVER A SMALLER, MORE CONCENTRATED AREA.

AS ONE TASK FORCE LEADER SAYS. THEY'RE THROWING EVERYTHING THEY'VE GOT AT THIS DIFFICULT, COMPLEX TASK.

ABC'S CLAYTON SANDELL HAS MORE. Return to index of stories...

MISSING PLANE ONE MONTH-PKG

SCRIPT:

Good morning. we've just gotten an update from

officials here and the headline is this: search teams have not had any NEW

contact with those underwater signals that MIGHT be coming from the black

boxes on Malaysia 370.

You'll recall the Australian ship Ocean Shield. using this US

Navy "pinger locator". detected two distinct signals over the weekend that

are consistent with the signal that would be sent out by an airplane's

cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder.

But in the last 24 hours officials here say they have not heard any more of

those pings.

SOT - ANGUS HOUSTON:

IF WE COULD GET MORE TRANSMISSIONS, WE CAN GET A BETTER FIX ON THE OCEAN

FLOOR WHICH WILL ENABLE A MORE FOCUSED SEARCH FOR WRECKAGE.

If they do get more pings. the teams will then deploy this underwater

torpedo-looking device called the Bluefin-21 that uses sonar to map the

ocean floor. and in theory would help reveal the wreckage of that Boeing

triple seven.

SOT - DAVID JOHNSTON / AUS MOD /

WE HAVE A POSITIVE LEAD. WE HAVE SHIPS TRYING TO ENHANCE THAT LEAD AND

DELIVER UP SOMETHING MORE TANGIBLE.

The search is also continuing from the air. 14 planes today. But in some

cases poor visibility is complicating the search.

SOT - CLAYTON IN COCKPIT: CLIP 74 - 051920 CLAYTON IN COCKPIT - RIGHT NOW

WE ARE ABOUT 600 FEET ABOVE THE WATER. THIS NEW ZEALAND AIRPLANE ONE OF

ABOUT A DOZEN ON THE SEARCH TODAY. THE PROBLEM IS THE WEATHER. IF THERE IS ANY WRECKAGE OUT THERE. IT'S GOING TO

BE A LOT HARDER TO SEE.

Officials here say there is still some doubt that these

pings are actually from Malaysia 370's black boxes. but it's their best

lead so far and they say to expect several days of "intense action" to try

and track that signal down.

FORECAST-WXWALL

"Showers and storms move in today"

Our streak of warm days with plenty of sunshine will come to an end today as showers and storms move in ahead of our next cold front. In its wake, a cooler and drier airmass will filter down the peninsula allowing for sunnier weather to return for the end of the week.

Our morning will be quite humid with temperatures in the lower 70s. Our skies will start off mostly cloudy and the vast majority of us will stay dry through sunrise, however a stray shower washing in off the gulf can't be ruled out. Clouds will thicken through the late morning hours and the winds will kick up ahead of a line of showers and t-storms. Expect the rain to approach our far northern counties by mid to late morning. This line will continue to sag south and east through the afternoon, keeping our daytime highs in the low 80s. The severe weather risk remains low, with heavier downpours and gusty winds being the main threats.

The rain will begin to weaken as it pulls away from Southwest Florida, and quiet conditions will be in store for the rest of the night. Temperatures will also be about 10° cooler as they bottom out in the lower 60s by tomorrow morning.

High pressure will build in across the state on Wednesday allowing skies to clear and the sunshine to return. Winds will be quite gusty out of the north and northwest as it sends in cooler and drier air. Daytime highs will remain unseasonably cool as they top out in the upper 70s. By Thursday morning, temperatures will dip into the middle 50s with a nice warm up during the day as highs warm into the lower half of the 80s. Mainly dry and partly sunny skies will remain in the forecast through the weekend.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

U-S REPRESENTATIVE VANCE McALLISTER OF LOUISIANA, A MARRIED MAN WITH FIVE CHILDREN, RAN ON A PLATFORM OF FAMILY VALUES.

".I believe Louisiana values like faith, family, and hard work are sorely missing in Washington, D.C."

HE ASKED FOR FORGIVENESS, MONDAY, AFTER A WEST MONROE, LOUISIANA, NEWS OUTLET POSTED THIS VIDEO ON ITS WEBSITE, WHICH THE OUACHITA CITIZEN SAYS SHOWS McALLISTER KISSING A MARRIED WOMAN ON HIS STAFF.

McALLISTER WON A SEAT IN THE U-S HOUSE THROUGH A SPECIAL ELECTION, LAST NOVEMBER, AFTER HIS PREDECESSOR RESIGNED.

IT'S ALL NEW THIS MORNING -- AND YOU'RE SEEING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME ON ABC-7.

RESEARCHERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE SAY -- FOUR PARALYZED MEN ARE NOW ABLE TO MOVE CERTAIN MUSCLES IN THEIR LEGS.

PARALYZED MEN MOVE-PKG

THIS MAN IS PARALYZED FROM THE CHEST DOWN. UNABLE TO MOVE HIS LEGS. UNTIL HE TURNS ON AN ELECTRICAL STIMULATOR IMPLANTED ON HIS SPINAL CORD.

"Now the stimulator is on. left leg up."

HE, ALONG WITH THREE OTHER PARALYZED MEN, ARE NOW ABLE TO FLEX THEIR TOES, ANKLES AND KNEES ON THEIR OWN.

THE IMPLANTED STIMULATOR IS RETRAINING THE NERVES IN THE LEGS TO WORK WITH THE BRAIN AGAIN.

"This is a very, very low-level stimulus that is re-awakening the circuits to cause the circuits to remember what they used to do."

ONE OF THE PARALYZED MEN IS ROB SUMMERS. SEEN HERE -AMAZINGLY- DOING SIT-UPS WITH A MEDICINE BALL.

HE WAS THE FIRST TO RECEIVE THE STIMULATOR. AND EVENTUALLY WAS ABLE TO STAND ON HIS OWN FOR SHORT PERIODS OF TIME.

HE SPOKE ABOUT HIS IMPROVEMENTS DURING A TELEPHONE INTERVIEW IN 2011.

"Being able to move my toes, ankles, knees on command. It was absolutely incredible. There are not enough words to describe how I felt. At one point it was just a dream, and now it's reality."

NOW THREE YEARS LATER -- THE SUCCESS GOES FURTHER. THE MEN ARE REGAINING MUSCLE MASS AND ARE RECOVERING OTHER FUNCTIONS OTHERWISE LOST TO THEIR INJURIES. LIKE SEXUAL FUNCTION AND BLADDER CONTROL.

"This is just amazing for persons with complete spinal cord injury where uh. in their diagnosis, their doctors probably said that they'll never ever be able to move again."

HERE THEY ARE. DOING JUST THAT.

FOR THESE MEN -- PARALYSIS IS NO LONGER NECESSARILY A LIFETIME SENTENCE. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WX WALL

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

CA SEAWORLD TEEN PETITION-OTS

ALLY, THANKS.

NEW THIS MORNING --

ABC-7 IS LOOKING AHEAD. TO A BILL THAT COULD FORCE SEA WORLD IN SAN DIEGO. TO STOP HAVING KILLER WHALES.

TODAY CALIFORNIA LAWMAKERS WILL HOLD THEIR FIRST HEARING.

MEANTIME -- THERE'S A GROUP OF YOUNG GIRLS, MAKING THEIR OPINIONS KNOWN.

GEORGE WARREN HAS THEIR STORY. Return to index of stories...

CA SEAWORLD TEEN PETITION-PKG

A lot of people are talking about the film called "Blackfish," which

has cast an extremely negative light on the use of orca whales for human

entertainment.

It now has the attention of state lawmakers who tomorrow morning will

consider banning killer whale shows in California.

And SeaWorld, whose San Diego park is the only place in the state where

orcas perform-- is fighting to keep a major moneymaker:

Three schoolgirls from Malibu delivered symbolic cardboard boxes to the

State Capitol;

Representing one-point-two million signatures supporting legislation to ban

the use of orcas for entertainment.

10-year-old Kirra Kotler-- there in the middle-- succeeded in getting her

school to cancel its annual spring trip to SeaWorld, which she admits,

created some problems with her classmates.

"My friend, I'm not going to say names, but

he was really mad with me. I told him, 'would you rather see whales be not

treated right or see real whales in the ocean and go whale watching?'"

The petition, the legislation, the cancelled school trip;

All of it the result of the documentary "Blackfish," which explores the use,

some say "misuse," of killer whales in show business.

The film pays particular attention to the fatal encounter between an orca

and a trainer at SeaWorld in Orlando four years ago.

A former SeaWorld orca trainer is among those calling on legislators to

support the bill.

"It's profit. Absolutely, it's

profit. Those whales are worth millions and millions and millions of

dollars."

But SeaWorld, which operates ten theme parks around the country-- including

the one in San Diego that would be affected by the legislation;

Criticizes the objectivity of the film, calling it one-sided propaganda: Return to index of stories...
