MISSING PLANE LATEST-OTS

NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN A STORY,

WE'VE BEEN CLOSELY FOLLOWING.

TWO MORE PINGS, DEEP IN THE OCEAN. IN THE SEARCH FOR MISSING MALAYSIA AIRLINES FLIGHT MH370.

IAN WILLIAMS HAS THE VERY LATEST. Return to index of stories...

MISSING PLANE LATEST-PKG

THE SEARCH COORDINATOR IS NOW OPTIMISTIC THEY WILL FIND WHAT'S LEFT OF FLIGHT MH370 IN THE NOT TOO DISTANT FUTURE.

"Yesterday's signals will assist in better defining a reduced and much more manageable search area on the ocean floor."

BUT HE WARNED THERE IS STILL A WAY TO GO, AND THAT HE ISN'T PREPARED TO CONFIRM ANYTHING UNTIL SOMEONE LAYS EYES ON THE WRECKAGE.

HIS OPTIMISM IS BASED ON THE DETECTION BY THE U-S NAVY'S PING DETECTOR OF TWO MORE SIGNALS CONSISTENT WITH THE BLACK BOXES.

THAT MAKES FOUR IN THE SAME AREA.

BUT THEY ARE GETTING WEAKER, PROBABLY AS A RESULT OF THE BLACK BOX BATTERIES COMING TO THE END OF THEIR LIFE.

"What we're trying to do right now is maximize the use of the towed pinger locator to try and detect those pingers while we still can."

THEY'RE NOW TRYING TO GET A BETTER LOCK ON WHERE THE SOUNDS ARE COMING FROM BEFORE SENDING DOWN A SUBMERSIBLE, A SORT OF UNDERWATER DRONE, TO CHECK IT OUT.

"But at a depth of two-point-eight miles, the sub would be working at its limits. It also works at walking pace, so still faces a daunting task unless the source of the sound can be narrowed. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Drier and cooler weather settles in"

It was a wet day across Southwest Florida as a cold front pushed through with rain and a few storms. Now that the rain has moved out, we're in store for pleasant changes for the second half of the week, which includes a couple of cool nights.

Our morning will get off to a partly to mostly cloudy start, with slightly cooler temperatures. Most of us are waking up to readings in middle 60s, with a few low 60s across our far northern counties. Winds will continue to be breezy out of the northwest with gusts up to 25mph. Patchy clouds will linger around through the mid day hours, with more sunshine breaking out during the afternoon hours. Daytime highs will be significantly cooler as they top out in the middle to upper 70s. As a dry airmass settles in, humidity levels will drop and our afternoon will remain quite comfortable.

Mostly clear skies will prevail tonight and temperatures will tumble into the middle 50s here in town. There will be a bit of a chill in the air, especially across our inland and northern cool spots, as the mercury drops into lower 50s by morning.

High pressure will have a nice grip on our weather through the end of the week. This will keep us in the 50s for one more night, but as winds start to veer more to the east a quick temperature rebound is forecast. By Thursday, daytime highs will climb into the lower to middle 80s with mainly dry and sunny weather. Rain returns to the area by Tuesday of next week. Return to index of stories...

TWO MILLION STUDENTS APPLIED FOR COLLEGE THIS YEAR.

AND FOR MANY WAITING TO HEAR BACK, IT CAN BE A TIME FILLED WITH NERVES AND ANXIETY.

CONSTANTLY CHECKING YOUR MAILBOX LOOKING FOR THAT BIG ENVELOPE. OR CLICKING THE REFRESH BUTTON ON YOUR BROWSER.

NO MATTER HOW YOU DO IT, WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM COLLEGE CAN TAKE A LONG TIME, AND IT CAN BE PRETTY SCARY.

"It was pretty torturing, knowing that I only applied to one, that was like my one hope"

MOST STUDENTS HAVE THEIR HEARTS SET ON A DREAM SCHOOL.

BUT THIS YEAR MANY ANNOUNCED RECORD LOW ACCEPTANCE RATES.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO TO INCREASE YOU'RE CHANCES: START EARLY!

"We want to make sure they're not going to miss any opportunities that they might have. In terms of funding financial aid, the sooner is better. The money shrinks as you go down later in the process."

AND IF YOU GET WAITLISTED, THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR COLLEGE ADMISSION COUNSELING SAYS ON AVERAGE ONLY 25% OF WAITLISTED STUDENTS END UP GETTING ACCEPTED.

AFTER YOU DO GET ACCEPTED, KEEP THOSE GRADES UP! COLLEGES HAVE THE RIGHT TO REVOKE ADMISSION IF THEY SEE YOU SLIPPING UP.

"I love the campus, I love everyone here I love the size. I love everything about it. I love my professors so it definitely worked out in the long run for me." Return to index of stories...

MISSING PLANE UPDATE-PKG

PKG SCRIPT:

There's new hope search teams will find Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

The Australian Navy vessel Ocean Shield picked up two more signals from deep

in the Indian Ocean.

That ship, which is using a sophisticated U.S. Navy pinger locater, has

detected four transmissions -- all in the same area.

SOT Angus Houston

"I BELIEVE WE ARE SEARCHING IN THE RIGHT AREA. BUT WE NEED TO VISUALLY

IDENTIFY AIRCRAFT WRECKAGE BEFORE WE CAN CONFIRM WITH CERTAINTY THAT THIS IS

THE FINAL RESTING PLACE OF FLIGHT MH370."

Eleven military aircraft and 14 ships were sent out today for a closer

inspection.

Officials now hope to narrow the search area so they can deploy a small

submarine or underwater vehicle to search for debris on the sea floor.

All of this could take days or even weeks.

SOT Matthews

"I'D SAY WE'RE GETTING MORE CONFIDENT THAT WE'VE FOUND THE HAYSTACK. / IF

YOU DREW A CIRCLE AROUND ALL THOSE DETECTIONS AND SAID THIS CIRCLE, THIS

AREA IS WHAT WE'RE GOING TO GO SEARCH, THAT'S STILL WEEKS TO MONTHS."

This is a painstaking search.

The water is extremely deep nearly 3 miles. or equal to 12 Empire

State buildings stacked on top of one another.

Adding to the urgency, the batteries in Flight 370's black boxes could run

out at any moment.

SOT Angus Houston

"IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE GATHER AS MUCH INFORMATION TO FIX THE POSSIBLE

LOCATION OF THE AIRCRAFT WHILE THE PINGERS ARE STILL TRANSMITTING."

If the batteries have already died, it could take even longer to the find

the 777 jet. But officials believe they're looking in the right area.

FORECAST-WX WALL

PICTURE BRIDGE COLLAPSE-PKG

It's the dance making headlines on social media.

22 students came to the home of Andy and Tammy White to take pictures before Pierce High Schools spring prom.

"We have a senior daughter Alisha and she wanted to know if she could have some friends come out and take pictures. They have done that in the past, usually inside. They decided to come and get a picture on a couple of the bridges here and they didn't opt for the more sturdy one and they got 21 or 22 of them on this back one and it turned out to be a little too much weight."

All that weight caused the group to take dip in the White's four-foot deep pond behind their house.

"The first thing I thought about when I went into the water was 'oh my gosh everyone is going to be so mad at me.' This is my fault because I planned this and that made me super upset. But then everyone was really nice about it and said its not your fault, you didn't know that was going to happen. There was nothing you can do."

Minus a few scrapes, and a ton of wet tuxes and dresses, the group made it out without serious injuries. By the end of Saturday night, the gang was the talk of Pierce. Then one member of the Pierce Prom Plunge party posted a picture of the incident to Twitter.

"And within two minutes I had 35 retweets from just my regular followers. Then I took a nap to recuperate from prom. By two hours later I had 3,000 retweets and now we are up to 40,000 retweets and favorites and we are still moving up."

Through all the new found fame, these students have learned what type of impact a single post on social media sites can have.

"Everyone really needs to be careful what they put on the internet because there is always a way to get to it. Just be safe about everything and you will be fine." Return to index of stories...
