Nats up singing: We shall overcome

President Obama, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the landmark

legislation that ended racial discrimination in public places. And

honoring the former president who made it happen - Lyndon B. Johnson - at

the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin today

SOT Obama: "President Johnson fought for and argued and horse traded and

bullied and persuaded until ultimately, he signed the Civil RIghts Act into

law.

President Obama praised Johnson for understanding what it felt like to be an

outsider in American society. And for having the courage to ask:

SOT Obama: "What the hell's the presidency for if not to fight for causes

you believe in?"

For blacks and Latinos, native americans, women and Americans with

disabilities. New doors of opportunity swung open for so many because of

Johnson's efforts. But the president also made things personal.

SOT Obama: "I have lived out the promise of LBJ's efforts, because Michelle

has lived out the legacy of those efforts / millions of my generation were

in a position to take the baton that he handed to us."

President Obama's remarks came on the third and final day of ceremonies

marking the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He said there remains work to do to

fulfill the promise of the goals Johnson championed.

SOT: "The story of America is a story of progress, however slow, however

incomplete / we are here today because we know we can't afford to be

complacent." Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

GREAT AFTERNOON AHEAD

After a cool morning, plenty of sunshine will bathe the region today.

Morning lows were in the 50s area wide, but with the sun highs will climb into the low 80s with low humidity values.

This evening and tonight will be very pleasant but still a little on the cool side.

Most of us closer to the coast and along the urban corridor will drop to the low 60s, except around Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda where we'll dip into the upper 50s.

We continue the warming trend Friday through the weekend with daytime highs bouncing back to the mid to upper 80s.

Humidity also makes a comeback late this weekend, but moisture will still be too limited to bring a significant rain chance into the forecast, keeping the weekend outlook mainly dry and sunny.

The next chance of rain likely won't be until Tuesday when a weak cool front slides down the Florida peninsula. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WXWALL
