FIRST WEATHER-WX CTR

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE ABC7 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

After a clear and quiet night for all the 4th of July celebrations across Southwest Florida, we're set to see an uptick in rain chances over the weekend as we transition into more of a routine summer pattern.

Most of us will start of the morning with sunny and mainly dry weather, but don't be surprised if a few spotty showers develop close to the coast through the morning.

The prime time for showers and storms will be from the mid afternoon through the early evening, and the highest concentration of storms will develop deeper inland. However, there is the potential that a few of our inland storms may push back toward the coast as we head into the late afternoon and evening.

Outside of today's storms, expect tons of sun and plenty of heat with temperatures soaring into the low to mid 90s through the afternoon.

At the beaches, temperatures won't be quite as toasty, and the forecast looks pretty nice for all the boaters and beach goers; winds will be light and variable through the morning and then becoming southwesterly by the afternoon at 5-10. Our inland waters should stay pretty smooth today unless you're close to a thunderstorm. The water temperature in the Gulf is 88 degrees at Fort Myers Beach.

For the second half of our weekend, expect to see a few more storms developing Sunday afternoon, particularly over our inland communities, but like today, the storms will tend to migrate closer to the coast later in the day.

We stay in a very routine summer pattern as we head into the upcoming week; each day will feature hot, humid, and sunny conditions with highs in the low to mid 90s before the storms start roaming around Southwest Florida by the afternoon and evening.

ARTHUR WEAKENING AND RACING AWAY

Tropical Storm Arthur is weakening quickly today as it races over the Canadian Maritimes. Arthur's impacts on the northeastern U.S. is now fading, and the storm will quickly lose its tropical status later this weekend as it gets pulled northward into the higher latitudes.

IMMIGRATION CRISIS-PKG

NATS

A different sort of fireworks today in Murrieta, California.

SOT - young vet

"I hate that all of our country is being invaded."

This week, protesters here blocked several busloads of undocumented

immigrants. They hoped to do so again today.

But the anti-immigrant protesters were outnumbered 3-to-1. And so far the

buses haven't come.

NATS

"Stop illegal immigration."

Many Murrieta residents loudly object to their community being dragged into

the border debate.

NATS

This is an invasion, why isn't National guard out there"

voicing their rage at a raucous town hall this week.

SOT- rick gibbs, murrieta city council

"People probably believe this is a xeonophobic, racist group of folks here

in this city."

TODAY a backlash from others sympathetic to the plight of the immigrants.

SOT - older woman

"I'm here to support the children feel bad they came a really long way and

all of this hatred is directed their way, not their fault."

NATS

Today, at a ceremony for new citizens in Washington DC, the President made

no mention of the anger across the southwest.

SOT Obama

"The basic idea of welcoming immigrants to our shores is central to our way

of life, it is in our DNA."

But it sure doesn't look that way in Murrieta.

MAIN WEATHER-WX WALL

Elsewhere in the tropics, all is quiet, and no tropical development is expected in the immediate future. Return to index of stories...

HEAT AND CHILDREN-ONCAM

INFANTS AND SMALL CHILDREN ARE AMONG THOSE AT THE HIGHEST RISK FOR HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES.

ABC'S HOLLY FIRFER HAS TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR KIDS IN TODAY'S HEALTH MINUTE. Return to index of stories...

HEAT AND CHILDREN-PKG

THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE IN THE SUMMER. TIME CAN SLIP RIGHT BY.

BUT EXPERTS SAY IT'S IMPORTANT TO RECOGNIZE THAT CHILDREN AND ADULTS TOLERATE HEAT VERY DIFFERENTLY.

Children are at higher risk for heat-related injuries because they have thin skin and they don't manage the heat exchange well. They tend to lose more fluids through their skinand so they need extra fluids relative to what an adult does.

ACCORDING TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION: INFANTS AND CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN FOUR ARE AMONG THOSE AT THE GREATEST RISK FOR HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS.

FOR BABIES UNDER SIX MONTHS, DOCTORS SUGGEST:

-KEEPING THEM OUT OF DIRECT SUN

-HAVE THEM HYDRATED PRIOR TO GOING OUT

-AND DRINK EVERY 20-30 MINUTES.

FOR OLDER KIDS:

-ANTICIPATE AND PLAN AHEAD. THEY, TOO, NEED TO DRINK BEFORE GOING OUT.

-TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS TO REHYDRATE

-AND AVOID SODAS WITH CAFFEINE.

AND WHILE WATER IS USUALLY SUFFICIENT.

After about an hour, water is not enough-utilizing a sports drink can be helpful for the extra electrolytes in it.

PARENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE THESE SYMPTOMS OF HEAT ILLNESS.

-FAINTNESS,

-EXTREME TIREDNESS,

-NAUSEA,

-FEVER

-OR MUSCLE SPASMS.

.ALL SIGNS THAT MEDICAL ATTENTION MAY BE NEEDED FOR A CHILD.

FOR TODAY'S HEALTH MINUTE, I'M HOLLY FIRFER. Return to index of stories...

HERE IS AN INSPIRING STORY THAT INVOLVES SOMETHING VERY SIMPLE.

8-YEAR OLD DYLAN PRUTNY IS UNDERGOING A DISEASE THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DESTORYING 90 PERCENT OF HIS ENERGY.

BUT THAT'S NOT STOPPING HIM FROM STAYING HAPPY AND POSITIVE.

DYLAN IS USING LEGOS TO BUILD A REPLICA OF THE HOSPITAL HE IS STAYING IN.

"Look, I have another helicopter piece."

TWO THINGS KEEP 8-YEAR-OLD DYLAN PRUNTY GOING, ACCORDING TO HIS MOM.

THE DOCTORS AT CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL LOS ANGELES AND LEGOS.

"It's magical. I never thought that a brick would bring so much happiness to my child."

DYLAN COMBINED HIS LIFE SAVERS WHEN THE MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION GRANTED HIM A WISH.

"Just like in the real place."

HE ASKED FOR THE LEGO MASTERS TO DESIGN A LEGO REPLICA OF THE HOSPITAL, COMPLETE WITH A HELICOPTER PAD, THE CAFETERIA, THE GIFT SHOP, EVEN AN OPERATING ROOM. DYLAN HAD SURGERY JUST THIS WEEK.

"They saved my life, and we live here."

OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS, DYLAN HAS SPENT MORE TIME AT CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL L.A. THAN HE HAS AT HOME, BEING TREATED FOR MITOCHONDRIAL DISORDER. MITOCHONDRIA ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING 90% OF THE ENERGY THE BODY NEEDS TO SUSTAIN LIFE. IT PRESENTS DIFFERENTLY IN EVERY CHILD.

FOR DYLAN, HIS IMMUNE AND DIGESTIVE SYSTEMS DON'T WORK WELL.

HE HASN'T EATEN SOLID FOOD IN TWO YEARS, AND HE IS PLAGUED BY KIDNEY STONES.

"Usually it takes three months to a year for someone to develop a kidney stone. Dylan makes them sometimes in minutes, hours, days. He can pass up to a hundred kidney stones a day."

AND THAT'S WHERE THE LEGOS COME IN.

"It distracts the pain, and it's like the best pain medicine."

DYLAN'S LEGO-BUILDING SKILLS HAVE FAR SURPASSED HIS PEERS. TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF HIS WORK. EVEN HIS DOCTORS ARE IN AWE. AMONGST THE SOME-FOUR THOUSAND LEGOS DYLAN HAS CONSTRUCTED TO BUILD THE HOSPITAL, THERE ARE LEGO VERSIONS OF SOME OF HIS FAVORITES, LIKE ENDOCRINOLOGIST DR. MIMI KIM.

"Apparently, this is me."

"Without glasses."

"Without glasses."

DYLAN SAYS HE DIDN'T JUST WISH TO BUILD THE HOSPITAL BECAUSE HE LIKES LEGOS.

"So we could raise money, yup, for more research."

IT'S SOMETHING HIS DOCTORS SAY MITOCHONDRIAL DISEASE DESPERATELY NEEDS.

"To consider the number of patients diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, and the much larger number of patients that we suspect are there that don't have a diagnosis yet, the number of dollars per patient is extremely small. I mean, mitochondrial disease in children is more common than childhood cancer."

DYLAN'S PROGNOSIS IS UNCLEAR. HE'S THE ONLY KNOWN CHILD IN THE WORLD WHO HAS THIS TYPE OF MITOCHONDRIAL DISORDER. HIS MOTHER, KAPKA, SAYS, HE DREAMS OF LIVING A NORMAL LIFE.

"I wish I could take it all away."

BUT UNTIL THEN, HE BUILDS, AND BUILDS, AND BUILDS SOME MORE.
